Abstract

Mathematical reasoning, mathematical communication, and self-efficacy are three interrelated competencies in mathematics learning, yet they are frequently neglected in conventional instruction that emphasizes rote procedural memorization. This study examined the effect of the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach on eighth-grade students’ mathematical reasoning ability, mathematical communication ability, and self-efficacy on the topic of circles. A quantitative approach with a nonequivalent control group quasi-experimental design was employed, involving 25 students in an experimental group who received RME-based instruction and 24 students in a control group who received conventional instruction, selected through purposive sampling at a private junior high school in Batam, Indonesia. Data were collected using essay-type tests of reasoning and communication ability together with a Likert-scale self-efficacy questionnaire, and were analyzed using one-sample and independent-samples t-tests after normality and homogeneity assumptions were confirmed. The results showed that the RME approach did not produce a statistically significant effect on mathematical reasoning ability (p = 0.419), but produced a significant effect on mathematical communication ability (p = 0.028) and self-efficacy (p = 0.002) compared with conventional instruction. These findings suggest that students’ engagement in contextual problems, group discussion, and presentation of solutions within the RME stages was more effective in fostering the ability to communicate mathematical ideas and self-confidence than in advancing formal reasoning within a relatively short intervention period. This study contributes to the RME literature by demonstrating that the effectiveness of an instructional approach is multidimensional and uneven across mathematical competencies, implying that teachers need to design additional reinforcement for reasoning when implementing RME over a short duration.

Abstract

Problem-solving in school geometry is one of the indispensable abilities for prospective mathematics teachers as a provision for their future careers. This research aims to investigate learning and teaching processes on problem-solving in school geometry and its corresponding impact on prospective mathematics teachers’ abilities. To investigate this, we conducted a qualitative case study in the form of online classroom observations and their corresponding written assessment for the case of problem-solving in school geometry, involving 47 mathematics education students (20-21 years old) in one of the universities in Indonesia. The results of this study showed that the learning and teaching processes are implemented through the use of a combination of deductive and inductive teaching approaches in which students contribute actively to problem-solving activities. From written student work, we found various solution strategies and conceptual difficulties in solving school geometry problems. We conclude that the use of the deductive and inductive approaches has influenced students’ ability and creativity in solving geometry problems. This implies that the combination of the teaching approach has contributed to the development of prospective mathematics teachers’ ability in dealing with non-routine geometry problems.

Abstract

This study observes students' problem-solving abilities in solving non-routine statistic problems. In this paper used descriptive qualitative by considering the population in one of the VIII I grade junior high schools in Bandung, namely SMP 12 Bandung by categorizing the results of problem-solving abilities into two categories, namely high and low. The sampling technique used purposive sampling involving 29 students. This research used problem-solving tests and interview guides to collect data. Test question was describing mathematical problem solving, consisting of one question on the Polya stages, which is used as a tool. This paper presents that students with high problem-solving skills in this study indicate that students with junior high problem-solving skills fall into the "good" category. At the same time, students with not good problem-solving problems, we can call it as "not good" category. The caused was the inability of students in the initial stage of problem-solving indicators, namely the process of understanding problems, usually students have difficulties in understanding and identifying problems, and difficulties in converting abstract tasks into mathematical form.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilatarbelakangi oleh keterbatasan kapasitas guru dalam merancang pembelajaran matematika yang berorientasi pada Tes Kemampuan Akademik (TKA), khususnya di lingkungan MGMP Matematika MTs Kabupaten Majalengka. Pembelajaran masih didominasi pendekatan prosedural dan Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS), sementara kemampuan guru dalam mengembangkan instrumen asesmen berbasis penalaran dan literasi numerasi juga masih terbatas. Program ini bertujuan meningkatkan kompetensi pedagogis dan profesional guru dalam merancang pembelajaran matematika berbasis TKA serta mengembangkan instrumen asesmen berorientasi Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). Pelaksanaan kegiatan menggunakan pendekatan participatory action research yang dipadukan dengan model capacity building melalui tahapan sosialisasi, pelatihan intensif, pendampingan implementatif, dan evaluasi. Kegiatan difokuskan pada pengembangan modul ajar berbasis konteks lokal dan penyusunan soal numerasi berbasis TKA. Hasil yang ditargetkan mencakup peningkatan kompetensi guru dalam merancang pembelajaran inovatif, tersusunnya modul ajar dan bank soal numerasi kontekstual, serta meningkatnya kualitas asesmen untuk mengukur kemampuan penalaran dan analisis siswa. Program ini diharapkan memperkuat ekosistem pembelajaran matematika yang adaptif dan kontekstual serta mendukung peningkatan kemampuan penalaran dan literasi numerasi siswa secara berkelanjutan.

Abstract

Mathematical critical thinking is a fundamental competency required to navigate complex problem-solving in the 21st century. However, empirical observations indicate that students often struggle with analytical reasoning, a deficiency potentially influenced by non-cognitive factors such as Adversity Quotient (AQ). This study aims to analyze the mathematical critical thinking profiles of Grade XII students in Garut Regency, West Java, Indonesia, based on their AQ levels. This research employs a qualitative descriptive design. The subjects were selected via purposive sampling and categorized into three distinct groups based on Stoltz’s framework: Quitters, Campers, and Climbers. Ten students were selected from each AQ category.Data were collected through AQ questionnaires, mathematical critical thinking tests, and semi-structured interviews. Data validity was established using time triangulation, followed by data reduction, display, and verification for analysis. The findings reveal a hierarchical consistency between AQ levels and critical thinking ability. Students in the Quitter group were limited to elementary clarification; Campers demonstrated intermediate capabilities but struggled with advanced evaluation; while Climbersmastered all written indicators but faced challenges in verbally articulating their mathematical reasoning.

Abstract

Berpikir komputasi telah menjadi keterampilan penting di era digital abad ke-21, yang melibatkan kemampuan memecahkan masalah, menganalisis data, dan membuat keputusan menggunakan prinsip komputasi. Berdasarkan penelitian sebelumnya, keterampilan CT dapat dipengaruhi oleh perbedaan gender. Tujuan penelitian ini yakni untuk mengkaji perbandingan kemampuan berpikir komputasi matematis siswa laki-laki dan perempuan, serta mendeskripsikan kemampuan berpikir komputasi matematis siswa ditinjau dari gender dalam menyelesaikan soal barisan dan deret. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah mixed method dengan desain sequential explanatory yang menekankan pada pengumpulan data kuantitatif lebih dulu kemudian data kualitatif. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada siswa kelas VIII SMP di Kota Bandung dengan melibatkan 18 orang siswa, terdiri dari 7 siswa laki-laki dan 11 siswa perempuan. Teknik pengumpulan data terdiri dari tes kemampuan berpikir komputasi dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tidak terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan antara kemampuan berpikir komputasi siswa laki-laki dan perempuan. Sedangkan secara kualitatif, menunjukkan siswa laki-laki dan perempuan menyelesaikan persoalan dengan proses yang berbeda khususnya pada keterampilan dekomposisi dan abstraksi, lalu pada keterampilan pengenalan pola dan berpikir algoritmik tidak ditemukan perbedaan. Computational thinking (CT) has become an essential skill in the digital age of the 21st century, involving the ability to solve problems, analyze data and make decisions using computational principles. According to previous research, gender differences can impact CT skills. This study aimed to compare male and female students' mathematical CT abilities and describe students' mathematical CT abilities in terms of gender in solving sequence and series questions. The research method used is a mixed method with a sequential explanatory design that emphasizes collecting quantitative data first, then qualitative data. This research was conducted on class VIII students of junior high schools in Bandung City, involving 18 students, consisting of 7 male students and 11 female students. The data collection technique consisted of a CT ability test and an interview. The results revealed no statistically significant difference between male and female students' CT abilities. While qualitatively, it shows that male and female students solve problems with different processes, especially in decomposition and abstraction skills, there is no difference in pattern recognition and algorithmic thinking skills.

Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi, menganalisis, dan mensintesis hasil-hasil penelitian tentang etnomatematika dalam berbagai konteks selama satu dekade terakhir. Melalui pendekatan meta-sintesis, studi ini mengeksplorasi bagaimana konsep etnomatematika diterapkan dalam beragam budaya, lingkungan pendidikan, dan masyarakat untuk menghubungkan matematika dengan nilai-nilai budaya lokal. Fokus utama penelitian mencakup aplikasi etnomatematika dalam pembelajaran, kontribusi terhadap pemahaman matematika siswa, dan peran dalam pelestarian budaya. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan meta-sintesis dengan melakukan tinjauan sistematis dan analisis terhadap studi-studi yang diterbitkan antara tahun 2020–2024 dari basis data yang yang relevan menggunakan NVIVO 12. Metode yang digunakan meliputi pengumpulan artikel relevan, penerapan kriteria inklusi dan eksklusi, pengkodean tema, dan sintesis temuan dari berbagai studi. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa etnomatematika tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai alat pedagogis yang efektif, tetapi juga sebagai sarana untuk mendukung inklusivitas dan relevansi pendidikan matematika di berbagai latar belakang budaya. Studi ini memberikan wawasan penting bagi pengembangan kurikulum yang kontekstual, berbasis budaya, dan mendukung keberagaman dalam pendidikan matematika. Abstract This study aims to identify, analyze and synthesize research results on ethnomathematics in various contexts over the past decade. Through a meta-synthesis approach, this study explores how ethnomathematics concepts are applied in diverse cultures, educational settings and communities to connect mathematics with local cultural values. The main focus of the study includes the application of ethnomathematics in learning, the contribution to students' mathematical understanding, and the role in cultural preservation. This study used a meta-synthesis approach by conducting a systematic review and analysis of studies published between 2020 and 2024 from relevant databases using NVIVO 12. The methods used included collecting relevant articles, applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, coding themes, and synthesizing findings from various studies. The results of the analysis show that ethnomathematics not only serves as an effective pedagogical tool, but also as a means to support the inclusivity and relevance of mathematics education across different cultural backgrounds. This study provides important insights for the development of contextualized, culturally-based and diversity-supportive curricula in mathematics education.

Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menelaah kegunaan modul digital pada pokok bahasan himpunan yang dirancang berlandaskan pembelajaran berbasis masalah (PBL) guna menunjang kecakapan representasi matematis para mahasiswa. Penelitian ini tergolong dalam jenis penyelidikan dan pengembangan (Research and Development/R&D) dengan menerapkan pola pengembangan ADDIE yang mencakup lima fase, yakni Analisis, Perancangan, Pengembangan, Penerapan, dan Penilaian. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 30 mahasiswa tingkat satu pada semester ganjil, yang secara langsung berperan sebagai pengguna modul dalam proses pembelajaran. Pengumpulan data mengenai kepraktisan dilakukan dengan menggunakan instrumen berupa angket kepraktisan. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa bahan ajar digital yang mengadopsi pendekatan pembelajaran berbasis masalah pada topik himpunan tergolong dalam klasifikasi amat praktis. Hasil N-Gain menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan representasi kelas berada pada kategori sedang. Temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa modul yang dikembangkan tidak hanya mudah digunakan dan dipahami oleh mahasiswa, tetapi juga mampu mendukung keterlibatan aktif mahasiswa dalam pembelajaran matematika berbasis masalah. Abstract This investigation endeavors to scrutinize the functional applicability of an electronically crafted module concerning set theory, meticulously architected upon the tenets of problem-oriented pedagogy (POP), with the principal objective of augmenting learners' proficiency in mathematical articulation. The inquiry is methodologically situated within the paradigm of investigative elaboration (I&E), employing the ADDIE architectural framework encompassing five sequential phases: analytical scrutiny, schematic formulation, constructive assembly, practical deployment, and evaluative assessment. The participants encompassed thirty neophyte scholars during the inaugural academic term, who served as direct beneficiaries of the instructional implementation throughout the pedagogical process. An evaluative questionnaire was deployed. Analytical scrutiny of the accumulated metrics reveals that the problem-oriented electronic module about set theory achieved within the classification of superlative practicality. The normalized gain indices demonstrate that the representational competencies reside within the intermediate stratum. This empirical evidence substantiates that the formulated module is not merely facile in utilization and cognition for scholars but also efficacious in fostering dynamic engagement within problem-centric mathematical tutelage.
