Abstract

This study investigates the critical thinking skills of ninth-grade students in public junior high schools across Batam City, specifically examining the individual and collective influences of Adversity Quotient, Self-Efficacy, and Self-Regulated Learning. Employing a quantitative cross-sectional correlational survey design, the research sampled 347 students selected via probability sampling. Data were gathered through structured questionnaires and critical thinking assessments. The results indicated that while SE exerts a positive and significant impact on critical thinking (t = 2.379 > 1.960; p < 0.05), AQ and SRL showed no statistically significant individual influence (p > 0.05). However, simultaneous analysis revealed that AQ, SE, and SRL collectively have a significant impact on students’ mathematical critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Background: The teaching of ratio remains a significant challenge in mathematics education, as students often struggle to understand multiplicative relationships and tend to rely on procedural reasoning rather than conceptual understanding. Previous studies have mainly focused on students’ conceptual difficulties, while limited attention has been given to how teachers’ didactic practices influence students’ engagement and understanding. Aims: This study aims to analyze the dynamics of didactical practices in ratio learning, focusing on instructional strategies, classroom interaction, and student engagement, and offers a novel contribution by examining how didactical practices shape variations in student engagement in real classroom contexts. Method: This research employed a qualitative case study design involving one mathematics teacher and 28 seventh-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: The findings indicate that teaching practices were dominated by direct instruction combined with contextual examples, which supported initial understanding but limited deeper conceptual exploration. Approximately 60% of students were actively engaged, while the others tended to be passive. Student interaction was mostly procedural, and the use of a reward system increased participation but encouraged performance-oriented behavior. Conclusion: These findings highlight the important role of didactic practices in shaping students’ engagement and understanding of ratio. It is recommended that teachers adopt more student-centered approaches, such as structured discussions and contextual problem-solving, to enhance conceptual understanding and equitable participation in mathematics learning.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to shed light on the domain of STEAM education research by employing a three-pronged strategy. This article provides a bibliometric analysis of STEAM education literature by focusing on three major research questions (RQs): RQ1. How has research on STEAM education progressed? RQ2. Who is the most influential in STEAM education research? RQ3. Which affiliations and countries are contributing to STEAM in education? This study combines quantitative analysis with descriptive methods. The evolution of STEAM education and the pattern of publishing found in Scopus, which is determined by research connections, research themes, and scientific journals, are of interest to researchers. Throughout this research, the Bibliometrix R-tool and the BiblioShiny software packages were utilized, one at a time, for data analysis, reduction, visualization, and mapping, respectively. In response to RQ1, this study found the Annual Growth Rate to be 24.19%. This finding is based on the trend of publications in STEAM in Education. The results indicate that there has been an increase in the number of journal articles devoted to this subject, which are frequently disseminated. The second question this research aims to answer is which areas of STEAM education research have the most influence. While Piperopoulos P has the top spot for the most globally mentioned documents, Perignat E holds the top spot for the most locally cited papers. In the meantime, Herro D is a writer who has contributed to the study done in the field of STEAM education. As for RQ3, it can be noted that Jeju National University and the Korea National University of Education are the top two campuses in the world regarding STEAM in Education research publications, both of which are located in South Korea.

Abstract

Spatial ability is important in learning geometry, especially related to 3D shapes. This study aims to analyze students' spatial ability based on van Hiele's geometry thinking level. The research was conducted with a qualitative case study approach involving 23 students of grade VIII at one of the public junior high schools in Bandung, West Java. The researchers gave two types of tests to students, namely spatial tests based on spatial perception, visualization, mental rotation, spatial relation, and spatial orientation elements, as well as geometry thinking tests based on van Hiele's five levels of thinking, namely visualization, analysis, informal deduction, deduction, and rigor. The results show that about half of students reached the visualization level with low spatial orientation ability, while the rest of students have not reached the visualization level with very low spatial orientation ability. The spatial ability of students in the spatial perception element is categorized as high, in the visualization and spatial relation elements is categorized as sufficient, and in the mental rotation element is categorized as low. Students' ability to see objects from various directions and to rotate objects still needs to be improved.

Abstract

Difficulties in learning mathematics are commonly attributed to the gap between school mathematics and students’ lived experiences. Therefore, instruction should begin from contexts that are meaningful and familiar to students. Ethnomathematics, grounded in cultural practices, can serve as an alternative form of scaffolding to support students in overcoming learning difficulties. This study aims to examine the role of ethnomathematics as pedagogical scaffolding within students’ Zone of Proximal Development in geometry learning among eighth-grade students located in South Nias Regency, involving 28 participants. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study analysed classroom interactions, student interviews, and teacher reflections during instruction that integrated the stone-jumping tradition (Hombo Batu) as a context for learning truncated pyramids. Data were analysed thematically to explore how instructional support mediated students’ transition from informal understanding to formal geometric reasoning. The findings indicate a process-oriented learning pattern, in which cultural familiarity serves as an entry point that promotes student engagement. Guided questioning and visualisation function as key scaffolding mechanisms that facilitate conceptual bridging within the ZPD. As instructional support is gradually reduced, students demonstrate increased autonomy, supported by peer interaction. This process reflects gradual abstraction, suggesting that ethnomathematics can be understood as a mediational pathway in culturally responsive mathematics learning.

Abstract

Mathematical reasoning is a fundamental component of meaningful mathematics learning; however, research on instructional approaches that systematically support its development remains fragmented. In particular, studies on mathematical reasoning and metaphorical thinking have largely evolved independently, resulting in limited integrative insights. Studies on mathematical reasoning and metaphorical thinking have often developed separately, resulting in limited understanding of how metaphorical-thinking-based learning contributes to reasoning development. This systematic literature review (SLR) aims to synthesize research trends on students’ mathematical reasoning in mathematics education and to examine how metaphorical-thinking-based learning approaches support the development of mathematical reasoning. Following the PRISMA 2020 framework, a systematic search of the Scopus and ERIC databases identified 36 peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2017 and 2025. The selected studies were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis focusing on research trends, instructional implementations, metaphor types, learning models, and reported effects on students’ mathematical reasoning. The findings indicate that mathematical reasoning is increasingly viewed as a multidimensional construct involving cognitive, representational, social, and contextual aspects. The review also reveals that metaphorical thinking functions as a cognitive bridge that connects abstract mathematical concepts with students’ concrete experiences through conceptual, structural, orientational, cultural, and embodied metaphors. These metaphorical approaches are integrated into various instructional models, including Realistic Mathematics Education, ethnomathematics, problem-based learning, embodied learning, and technology-supported learning environments. Furthermore, the findings highlight several research gaps, including limited empirical studies explicitly linking metaphorical thinking and mathematical reasoning, insufficient longitudinal evidence, and limited comparative analysis across metaphor types. Overall, this review emphasizes the need for more theoretically integrated and empirically grounded studies on metaphor-based mathematical reasoning in mathematics education.
