Abstract

This study aims to explore innovation in mathematics learning through the application of the design thinking approach to support students' mathematical creative thinking skills. The research employed an exploratory mixed-method approach based on the design thinking framework, focusing on the empathize, define, and ideate stages. The study involved 160 students and 11 mathematics teachers from four madrasahs in Kendal Regency, Indonesia. Data were collected through questionnaires and in-depth interviews and analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis supported by triangulation techniques. In addition, a meta-analysis of 11 relevant studies was conducted using the OpenMEE application to examine the effectiveness of several proposed learning solutions. The results of the empathize stage showed that 67% of students had positive emotional responses toward mathematics learning, while 65% experienced difficulties in remembering formulas and 57.5% had difficulty understanding mathematical concepts. At the define stage, the main problems identified were students’ difficulties in understanding abstract mathematical concepts, low learning motivation, and the need for more interactive and differentiated learning approaches. The ideate stage generated several potential solutions, including the development of differentiated learning supported by interactive media such as H5P and Edpuzzle as well as the implementation of the REACT learning model. The meta-analysis results indicated a large and statistically significant effect of these learning innovations on improving students' mathematical abilities, with an estimated effect size of 1.683 (p < 0.001; 95% CI = 1.022–2.345). These findings suggest that integrating design thinking with evidence-based learning innovations can provide effective strategies for improving students’ mathematical creative thinking skills and creating more interactive and student-centered mathematics learning environments.

Abstract

Teaching and learning activities are carried out through teacher guidance. The results of observations made that in the learning process the teacher has applied various teaching variations in order to achieve learning objectives. In carrying out a learning process, teaching variations are applied evenly. However, there are some whose implementation in the learning process is still not optimal so that there needs to be mastery or improvement in its implementation. In other cases, there are still some teachers who focus too much on learning to read, write and count, so that children's intelligence and creativity are not optimally honed. The research method used in this study is the experimental research method. The research design used is a pre-experimental research design. The results of data processing obtained during the study showed an increase in children's visual spatial abilities and creativity. In the data normality test, it is stated that it is normally distributed if the significance value is 0.05. The results of the data normality test from the variables of visual spatial ability and creativity show that the data is normally distributed with a Sig. value. Visual spatial ability 0.200 0.05, and a Sig. value. creativity 0.076 0.05. In the homogeneity test, the data is stated to be homogeneous if the significance value is 0.05. The homogeneity test of the variables of children's visual spatial ability and creativity also shows that the data is homogeneous, with a Sig. value of visual spatial ability of 0.556 0.05 and a Sig. value of children's creativity of 0.625 0.05.

Abstract

The background of this research is that some children have inhibited creativity development because they have difficulty in conveying ideas and concepts during the learning process. Some children are less interested in creative activities. The objectives of this study are: 1) to determine the creativity of early childhood through project-based learning strategies using used materials at KB Mutiara Bunda Bumiayu; 2) to determine the supporting and inhibiting factors of early childhood creativity through project-based learning strategies using used materials at KB Mutiara Bunda Bumiayu. This study uses qualitative research with a survey design. Primary data sources were obtained from early childhood group B. Data collection used observation, interviews, and documentation. Data validity testing used data credibility with technical triangulation. Data analysis techniques used qualitative descriptive. The results of the study showed that: 1) early childhood group B at KB Mutiara Bunda Bumiayu has creativity in making underwater decorations using used materials through a project-based learning model. Children have imagination in making underwater decorations using used materials, such as: used cardboard, used styrofoam, glue, white paper, small stones, pictures of fish, and plastic grass. Children dare to try making underwater decorations using used materials. Children can explore underwater conditions through TV shows and YouTube. Children can turn used materials into underwater decorations. 2) Supporting factors for the development of children's creativity, namely children get motivation, direction, materials, and tools to make underwater decorations from teachers. 3) Inhibiting factors for the development of children's creativity, namely children need a lot of time to express ideas in decorating the underwater using used materials. The suggestion of this study is that children should be able to utilize used materials, so that they get works that can increase their creativity. Abstract

Purpose: Despite the widespread use of Problem-Based Learning (PBL), fraction manipulatives, and multiple mathematical representations, few learning media integrate these components to improve students' numeracy skills. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and evaluate SmartFraction, an integrated PBL-based fraction learning media by examining its validity, practicality, and effectiveness. Methods: This study employed a Research and Development approach using the ADDIE model, followed by a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. Participants comprised 23 fourth-grade students (12 experimental and 11 control). Data were collected through expert validation, response questionnaires, classroom observations, and numeracy tests. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk test, Levene's test, an independent-samples t-test, normalized gain (N-Gain), and Hedges' g. Findings: SmartFraction demonstrated high validity (88.33%) and high practicality based on user responses. Students in the experimental group achieved significantly higher numeracy performance than those in the control group (p < 0.001). The experimental group achieved a moderate N-Gain (0.6487), whereas the control group achieved a low N-Gain (0.2387). Hedges' g (4.94) indicated a very large effect, although this result should be interpreted cautiously because of the relatively small sample. Overall, SmartFraction proved to be a valid, practical, and effective learning medium for improving students' numeracy skills. Research Implications: SmartFraction offers an effective alternative by integrating contextual problem solving, multiple fraction representations, and collaborative learning to strengthen numeracy. Originality: SmartFraction uniquely integrates PBL, multiple fraction representations, and numeracy-oriented tasks into a single learning medium, addressing a gap in previous fraction learning research.
