Abstract

This research is motivated by the low spatial thinking ability of junior high school students in geometry, especially in visualizing three-dimensional objects and mental manipulation. The focus of the problem is directed at an in-depth analysis of students' spatial thinking processes when solving geometry problems based on the cultural context of the Great Mosque of Demak in terms of Van Hiele's theory. The research method applied is descriptive qualitative through purposive sampling of students who have been previously categorized. The research stages include a geometry ability test on twenty-one students, working on culture-based problems, and semi-structured interview observations. The identification results show eight students with low abilities, eleven with medium abilities, and two with high abilities. The findings reveal significant variations at each cognitive level. Low-ability students were only able to reach the basic visualization stage and experienced obstacles in the aspects of relations and transformation. Medium-ability students showed adequate mastery of visualization and orientation, but were not optimal in reasoning and reflection. In contrast, high-ability students managed to master all spatial indicators comprehensively and optimally. These findings confirm that the level of Van Hiele's geometry ability has a crucial influence on the development of spatial thinking processes in the context of local ethnomathematics. The main conclusion is that the integration of cultural context is able to reveal the depth of mental representation, so that geometric ability becomes the main predictor of success in solving spatial problems logically through a deep and measurable cultural approach in secondary schools.

Abstract

Abstract.  The 21st century requires individuals to have the ability to think comprehensively, especially in critical and creative thinking. However, there is a significant gap between global competency demands and student competency achievement in Indonesia. The results of the PISA study show that the literacy skills of Indonesian students are still relatively low, including in terms of numeracy or contextual problem solving. Based on a preliminary study of 658 vocational school students in Semarang, as many as 81.9% considered mathematics as a difficult subject. This research uses a qualitative approach with the Design Thinking method and ADDIE R&D model development design. The stages of Design Thinking applied include: the empathize stage to explore students' learning needs through interviews and observations; the definition stage to identify the main problems in learning; the ideate stage to design an AKM-based learning solution; prototype stage to create interactive media and LKPD; as well as the test stage to implement the media and assess its effectiveness through the Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM). Numeracy ability is studied through three main indicators, namely (1) the use of numerical and symbolic representations, (2) information analysis in the form of tables, graphs, images, and diagrams, and (3) the formulation of conclusions or predictions from available data. Data is collected through tests and analyzed descriptively as well as statistical tests. The results of the analysis showed that of 36 students in grade XI of SMK Negeri 1 Semarang, 86% had numeracy skills in the very high category and 14% in the high category, obtained a significance value (Sig.) for class XI TO 2 of 0.109 and for class XI TO 3 of 0.134. Both values are greater than 0.05, so it can be concluded that the data from both classes come from a normally distributed population. The average post-test score of the experimental class was 85.39 higher than the control class of 84.16. This indicates that the work on AKM questions and the use of media based on the Design Thinking approach contribute statistically significantly to improving students' numeracy skills. Thus, AKM has proven to be effective as a measuring tool as well as a strategy to increase numeracy in mathematics learning at vocational schools. Keywords: Minimum Competency Assessment, Numeracy Ability of Vocational School Students, Design Thinking Approach in Mathematics.

Abstract

The main problem in this study is that many students consider mathematics a difficult subject to learn, which results in a lack of student motivation and passive, less participatory mathematics learning between teachers and students. This study aims to explore solutions to problems that arise in mathematics learning through the design thinking method, as outlined by David Kelley, which consists of 5 stages: empathize, define, ideate, Prototype, and test. In this problem exploration, 3 stages are used: empathize, define, and ideate to generate solution ideas from several possible solutions. The study population comprised 25 eighth-grade students and 3 mathematics teachers at SMP Al Islam, Mts Fathul Huda, and SMPN 2 Sayung. Data were collected using a Google Form questionnaire. The results of the data obtained are then analyzed from the empathize to the define stage. The results of this study indicate that the problem-based learning model, supported by GeoGebra and Canva, can improve students' problem-solving abilities. Based on the results of this exploration, researchers developed interactive media using the design thinking method to improve problem-solving abilities.  Keywords: mathematics, interactive media, problem solving

Abstract

Early reading ability is a crucial cognitive foundation for lower-grade elementary school students, but its acquisition is often suboptimal due to conventional passive learning paradigms. This study aims to investigate the effect of active learning strategies assisted by syllable card media on the early reading skills of first and second-grade elementary school students. This quantitative study utilized a quasi-experimental design. The research instruments were systematically validated through expert judgment by 5 peers and empirically tested on a field sample of 30 students. Evaluation of instrument quality integrated Classical Test Theory (SPSS) and Modern Test Theory via the Rasch Model using Ministep 5.1.5.2 software. Content validation yielded an Aiken's V index ranging from 0.67 to 0.93, confirming that all structural items were valid. Inter-rater reliability analysis demonstrated a high level of internal consistency with a Cronbach's Alpha coefficient of 0.805, robustly supported by a Fleiss' Kappa coefficient of 0.684, which indicates a substantial and statistically significant agreement among raters (p = 0.000). Furthermore, the modern Rasch analysis verified measurement stability with a Person Reliability index of 0.71 and an Item Reliability index of 0.74, with all item parameters classified as fit within the measurement model (Infit/Outfit MNSQ ranges of 0.82–1.28). In conclusion, the developed assessment model meets strict psychometric standards, and the implementation of active learning significantly accelerates basic literacy acquisition in the foundational phase of primary education.

Abstract

Primary school students continue to demonstrate low levels of scientific literacy and collaboration skills, highlighting the urgent need for innovative science instruction. This study investigated the effectiveness of Edugame-supported Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in enhancing fifth-grade students' scientific literacy and collaboration skills in learning the Solar System. The study employed a quantitative quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design. The population comprised all fifth-grade students at SDN 1 Jurangjero, Indonesia, and purposive sampling selected 60 students: 30 for the experimental group and 30 for the control group. Data were collected through testing, observation, questionnaires, and documentation using scientific literacy tests, collaboration observation sheets, and student questionnaires. The instruments demonstrated good validity (80%) and excellent reliability (Cronbach's alpha = .949). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and one-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) after meeting the assumptions of normality, homogeneity of variance, and homogeneity of covariance. Results revealed a significant multivariate effect of Edugame-supported PBL on both dependent variables (Wilks' Λ = .089, F(2, 57) = 292.98, p < .001). Edugame-supported PBL provides an effective instructional strategy for strengthening scientific literacy and collaboration skills while offering practical guidance for teachers and curriculum developers to implement interactive, student-centered science learning.
