Abstract

Rapid development of technology for the past two decades has greatly influenced mathematic learning system. Mathematica software is one of the most advanced technology that helps learn math especially in Geometry. Therefore this research aims at investigating the effectiveness of analytic geometry learning by using Mathematica software on the mathematical abstraction ability, motivation, and independence of students. This research is a quantitative research with quasi-experimental method. The independent variable is learning media, meanwhile the dependent variables are students’ mathematical abstraction ability, motivation, and independence in learning. The population in this research was the third semester students of mathematics education program and the sample was selected using cluster random sampling. The samples of this research consisted of two distinct classes, with one class as the experimental class was treated using Mathematica software and the other is the control class was treated without using it. Data analyzed using multivariate, particularly Hotelling’s T2 test. The research findings indicated that learning using Mathematica software resulted in better mathematical abstraction ability, motivation, and independence of students, than that conventional learning in analytic geometry subject.

Abstract

This research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) to improve students' multi-representation ability. A quasi-experimental design was used in this research. Sixty-four samples from the seventh-grade students of Junior School were randomly selected and divided into two classes: experimental class was treated using RME and control class was treated using conventional learning, with each class consisting of thirty-two students. The essay test was used to measure the multi-representation ability of students and the questionnaire was used to measure students' responses in RME learning. The data from the essay test were analyzed by N-Gain test and t-test in which normality and homogenity test were conducted previously, while the students' learning completeness and student responses were presented descriptive quantitative. The result of the research concluded that the multi-representation ability of students who get RME learning is better than the multi-representation ability in students who get conventional learning. 87.25% of students who get RME learning with the developed device have completed the KKM, and many students are very enthusiastic and interested in RME based learning, thus increasing their learning spirit in a learning process.

Abstract

This research explained prospective teacher beliefs and the relationship between beliefs and practice of learning mathematics in the classroom in terms of differences in adversity quotient (AQ). Three prospective teacher who each had different AQ, namely climber, camper and quitter, were the subjects in this research. This subject has good communication skills, has passed microteaching and has no experience in teaching mathematics in schools. The research data were collected through interviews and classroom observation. Two interviews and learning observations for each research subject were carried out to obtain credible research data. Videos from interviews and video practice of learning mathematics in class were played repeatedly to increase the researcher's persistence in obtaining research data. The data that had been obtained were coded, reduced, triangulated, and analyzed to describe beliefs and implementations of beliefs in learning practices. The results showed that there were differences in beliefs between climber, camper and quitter students. The beliefs held by each student are actually applied in the practice of learning mathematics in the classroom. This shows that there is a high degree of consistency between beliefs and the practice of learning carried out.

Abstract

Communication skills are an essential aspect that students need to possess by students who want to succeed in their studies, where students' mathematical communication can organize mathematical thinking both orally and in writing. While AQ is intelligent in facing difficulties, a student must face the problems that exist in them. This study aims to determine the profile of prospective mathematics prospective teacher's mathematical communication skills in terms of adversity quotient. This study was conducted on mathematics education students in the 6th semester of Universitas PGRI Semarang. This research is a descriptive qualitative study. Subjects taken from 57 respondents were three students in the category of climbers, campers, and quitters. Written tests and interviews do data collection. Indicators of mathematical communication skills used in this study include drawing, writing, and mathematical expression. The results showed that the subject climber can meet all the indicators of mathematical communication skills and can be said to be good. Subject campers tend to meet all indicators of mathematical communication skills, have the power of communication in indicators drawing, and be quite useful. Quitter's subject tends not to meet all the communication indicators. The subject does not answer the drawing indicator's problem, and the writing and mathematical expression indicators are still wrong.

Abstract

Beliefs and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) are two factors influencing teaching practice in the classroom. This research aims to describe the beliefs and PCK of the prospective mathematics teachers and the relationship between the two factors on the teaching practices in the mathematics classroom. Participant in this research includes a prospective teacher who has taken a micro teaching subject and has good communication skill. Data were collected through interview and video analysis on the teaching practice in the classroom. The data obtained were coded, simplified, presented, and triangulated for the credibility and concluded. The result of the research shows that the prospective teachers who hold a constructivist belief view mathematics as a dynamic knowledge which evolves and is regarded as the space of creation for humans. Their beliefs on the nature of mathematics support the belief in the teaching-learning process in mathematics classrooms. Furthermore, a good understanding of the prospective teachers have on the components of the PCK has been sufficient, which can be identified in every step of practical activities in the classroom. More elaboration on the relationship between the belief and PCK is presented in this research.

Abstract

The ability of problem posing is very essential for the student’s. However, there are still many students who don't realize the importance of these abilities. This research describes the senior high school student’s ability in mathematical problem posing, especially in the material system of linear equations in three variables. Research data were collected from 7 student’s using written test and interview techniques. The validity of the data used triangulation methods by comparing the results of written tests and interviews. Data were coded, simplified, presented, and triangulated for the credibility and conclusion drawing. The results show that there were still very few students who have all three classifications of problem posing abilities, namely pre-solution posing, within-solution posing, and post-solution posing. Students who have the ability of pre-solution posing can ask questions based on the data provided and can arrange problem solving. Students who have the ability of within-solution posing can write what is given and asked of the problem, raise supporting questions which is relevant to the problem and arrange solutions to the supporting questions and problems that are given correctly. Students who have the ability of post-solution posing can raise similar mathematics problem after solving the problem. Students can also arrange solutions to problems that have been made. Teacher needs to practice pre-solution posing, within-solution posing, and post-solution posing to the students.
