Abstract

This research examines the role of phonology in the process of second language acquisition. Phonology, as a branch of linguistics that studies the sound system of a language, has a significant impact on a learner's ability to master the target language. This study aims to analyze how the differences in the phonological system between the mother tongue and the second language affect the ability of learners to perceive and produce language sounds. The methods used include a comprehensive literature review and case studies of English as a second language learners from various mother tongue backgrounds. The research results show that phonological transfer from the mother tongue to the second language can cause difficulties in pronunciation and comprehension. However, good phonological awareness and appropriate training can help overcome these obstacles. These findings have important implications for second language teaching, emphasizing the importance of focusing on phonological aspects in curriculum and teaching methods. Further research is needed to develop effective strategies for overcoming phonological challenges in second language acquisition.

Abstract

The role of prosody and intonation in English phonology has significant implications for speech perception and production. These phonological processes influence how words are understood and articulated in English. Recent studies have shown that prosody and intonation play a crucial role in verbal communication. This article aims to investigate the importance of prosody and intonation in understanding and producing speech in English language learning intonation refers to the melodic pattern in speech that can change the meaning of a sentence. It is often used to convey emotions or to emphasize a message. On the other hand, prosody encompasses the patterns of pitch, stress, and duration in speech that impact word articulation and comprehension. Both work together to create accurate articulation and understanding of words in English this linguistic study underscores the importance of prosody and intonation in English language learning and elucidates how these two aspects influence speech perception and production. With a deep understanding of prosody and intonation, learners can enhance their ability to communicate in English more effectively and accurately.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out how loanwords from other languages in Indonesian change their phonemes. Changes in vowel and consonant phonemes indicate these changes. The research method combines literature review techniques and qualitative descriptive methods. The data collected are taken from various literature sources and then grouped according to certain criteria. The results showed that language sounds are based on two premises: they usually form symmetrical patterns and the sounds of language usually interact with each other. Phonology also has hypotheses, which serve as the basis of its analysis in the following way, in addition to these two premises. When phonetically similar sounds contrast in minimal pairs, it is first necessary to treat them as different phonemes.

Abstract

The problems faced by students of North Sumatra State Islamic University in the use of pronouns and their application in improving the language of students. This study aims to determine the understanding of students in using appropriate pronouns and the problems that hinder them in learning can be seen from their lack of proficiency in applying pronouns in language both in writing and orally. Observation method was used in this research. This study uses data collection techniques. The research used is an interview test. From the test that took place, it was analyzed to measure the average knowledge in the application of pronouns. Pronouns are parts of speech which we can interpret as “pronouns”. The function of pronouns themselves is very important to learn in order to replace nouns such as people, objects, animals, and other things that are abstract. Another reason for learning pronouns is to avoid repeating the use of nouns which by nature are not needed. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that students often have problems in using pronouns. This is due to some of them who are not fluent in mastering pronoun learning and English that is not mastered by them. Driven by low learning factors, and not getting enough examples, practice, and often not having guidance from their English teachers who are proficient in the field therefore it needs to be realized as early as possible so that as learners are more active again in mastering the material in order to minimize the lack of understanding of planning.

Abstract

This research investigates the challenges students face in understanding Western films, focusing on language and dialect differences, narrative complexity, and cultural factors. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data was collected through observation and interviews with students at SMP N 4 Sei Kanan. Findings indicate that language barriers, including unfamiliar accents and slang, complex plot structures with intricate storylines and character developments, and cultural nuances, such as differing social norms and historical references, pose significant difficulties for students. Additionally, students often struggle with idiomatic expressions and humor that do not translate well across cultures. This study suggests incorporating strategies to improve students' listening skills and cultural awareness through targeted educational interventions, such as integrating multimedia resources in the curriculum, conducting workshops on cultural contexts, and providing supplementary language support. By addressing these challenges, educators can enhance students' comprehension and appreciation of Western films, fostering a more inclusive and effective learning environments.Student Difficulties, Western Films, Language and Dialect Differences

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the ELSA Speak application in improving the pronunciation skills of EFL students. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, the study compared the pronunciation skills of students using ELSA Speak with those using the U-Dictionary application. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, and analyzed using paired sample t-tests. The researcher employed a paired sample t-test to determine if there was a statistically significant disparity between the pre-test and post-test scores of students' pronunciation abilities following the utilization of the ELSA Speak App in the experimental class and u-dictionary in the control class. The results indicate that students using ELSA Speak showed significant improvement in pronunciation skills compared to those using U-Dictionary. These findings suggest that ELSA Speak is an effective tool for enhancing pronunciation skills in EFL contexts, providing valuable insights for educators and curriculum developers. Keywords: graphic novels; comprehension; reading; values

Abstract

This study investigates language processing in EFL learners from a psycholinguistic perspective, with a focus on lexical access and sentence comprehension. Many EFL learners experience persistent comprehension difficulties despite years of formal instruction. This study aims to explain these difficulties by examining underlying cognitive processes rather than surface-level performance. The research employed a qualitative design involving undergraduate EFL students. Data were collected through think-aloud protocols, semi-structured interviews, reading comprehension tasks, and field notes. The analysis applied thematic procedures to identify patterns related to word retrieval, processing strategies, and sentence parsing. The findings reveal five dominant issues: delayed lexical access, reliance on word-by-word processing, difficulty with complex sentence structures, heavy dependence on first-language translation, and low automaticity in language processing. These factors interacted to increase cognitive load and disrupt real-time comprehension. The results indicate that comprehension failure stems primarily from processing constraints rather than insufficient grammatical knowledge. The study highlights the importance of incorporating psycholinguistic principles into EFL instruction. Teaching practices should prioritize processing efficiency, repeated exposure, and incremental sentence comprehension. By aligning pedagogy with how learners process language cognitively, EFL instruction can become more effective and sustainable.

Abstract

This study examines how cognitive load influences sentence processing in the comprehension of complex clauses among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. It aims to explore learners’ perceptions of sentence complexity, their strategies in managing comprehension difficulties, and their awareness of the cognitive effort involved in reading academic texts. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, ten English Education students from a university in Medan, Indonesia, participated in reading tasks containing complex academic sentences. Data were collected through think-aloud protocols and in-depth semi-structured interviews, then analyzed using discourse and thematic analysis to identify linguistic and cognitive patterns. The results indicate that complex sentence structures impose high cognitive demands, especially when multiple clauses and dense syntactic constructions are present. Learners with limited working memory capacity experienced slower reading, repeated rereading, and fragmented comprehension. To cope with these challenges, they employed strategies such as segmentation, rereading, translation, and note-taking, which helped reduce processing strain but did not fully enhance efficiency. The study concludes that comprehension difficulties arise from the interaction between cognitive load, sentence complexity, and working memory limitations, emphasizing the importance of instructional approaches that align linguistic input with learners’ cognitive capacities.
