Studying phonemes is a part of phonology, so writing this article is about learning basic phonemes. Phonemes are the basic level of phonological learning because phonemes are the smallest basic units that form the elements that make up speech sounds. Therefore, in this article we will study the basic phoneme which is the smallest functional unit of language. a phoneme cannot stand alone because a phoneme has no meaning, but its role is very important because a phoneme can distinguish meaning. For example, the phonemes [l] and [r]. If we separate these two phonemes, we will definitely not understand their meaning. A phoneme has an identity basis which is called the meaning distinguishing function of the sound units of language. The method used in this article is a method that collects information through questionnaires to analyze students' understanding of phonemic learning and draw conclusions about basic phonemic learning, whether learning is important and easy to understand.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate and overcome language pronunciation problems faced by students at the North Sumatra State Islamic University (UINSU). This research will identify the main challenges in pronunciation faced by students, develop a practical approach based on phonological principles to improve their pronunciation abilities, and improve the quality of language teaching and learning at UINSU through the effective application of phonological methods. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach to investigate language pronunciation problems among students at the North Sumatra State Islamic University (UINSU). The findings of this research indicate that students at the North Sumatra State Islamic University (UINSU) still face various challenges in Indonesian pronunciation. The main factors causing this challenge include varying mother tongue backgrounds among students, suboptimal teaching methods, and lack of adequate practice in pronunciation.

Abstract

Because the ultimate goal of English instruction is for students to be able to communicate successfully in English, it is critical for EFL students to have a clear and comprehensible pronunciation of the language. As a result, English students must place a higher focus on their ability to accurately enunciate words. Learning good pronunciation is one of the most important things one can do to improve one's communication skills. However, many English as a foreign language students find it difficult to polish their pronunciation. Outside of Indonesia, students in Indonesia are required to study English as their first language. Students study English at school solely for the purpose of communication. As a result, they are unable to correctly enunciate any English word, despite the fact that they are expected to utilize English fluently outside of the classroom. The objective of this essay is to analyze the obstacles and reasons that Indonesian students have when attempting to accurately pronounce English consonants by analyzing past research. Following an examination of the study, it was discovered that Indonesian students had similar difficulty and inaccuracies in pronouncing English consonants. The first reason is because some consonants in English do not exist in Indo-European or their native language. This is due to the fact that English consonants were taken from other languages. The second issue is that most Indo-European students have difficulty pronouncing stop consonants such as / v / θ / ð / ʃ / ʒ / tʃ / and / dʒ /. These are the vowels and consonants that come at the end of words. The difficulties distinguishing between voiced (consonants with vibration) and voiceless (consonants without vibration) consonants, the inconsistent sounds for vowel letters in English and Bahasa Indonesia, vowel-letter combinations, silent letters, a lack of knowledge of English fricative sounds, a preference for speaking their mother tongue rather than English, a lack of experience correctly pronouncing things, and the sounds of two or three combinations of consonants.

Abstract

This research examines students’ difficulties in conveying English diphthongs, especially closing and middle diphthongs. This study was conducted qualitatively with a phenomenological approach through interviews with students in the first semester of the English Language Education Study Program at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra. The research results show that the influence of mother tongue is very significant on the accuracy of different pronunciations. The main factors include difficult vowel transitions, differences in phonological systems between Indonesian and English, and the substitution of diphthongs for pure vowels. Closing diphthongs such as /eɪ/, /aɪ/, and /oʊ/ were found to be more difficult to pronounce than middle diphthongs because they require faster and more accurate vowel movements. Apart from that, internal factors such as lack of self-confidence also contribute to pronunciation errors. This study suggests the use of intensive practice, learning technology, and immediate feedback to improve diphthong pronunciation accuracy.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of task-based learning and technology in improving students' English-speaking skills. A mixed-method approach was employed, involving 120 high school students divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group participated in task-based learning enhanced by digital tools, while the control group followed traditional instruction. Data collection included pre- and post-tests, surveys, interviews, and observations. The findings revealed that task-based learning fosters active engagement and practical language use, addressing key challenges in fluency and pronunciation. The incorporation of digital tools provided immediate feedback and personalized practice, significantly enhancing speaking abilities. Additionally, phonological insights and cross-cultural learning experiences contributed to improved pronunciation and global communication skills. This study underscores the importance of an integrated approach combining direct teaching methods, technology, and phonological understanding in developing students’ speaking proficiency. These results offer practical implications for curriculum design, emphasizing the need for innovative, student-centered language learning strategies.

Abstract

This research comprehensively examines the use of relative pronouns in English and their implications for language learning, both in academic and practical contexts. Relative pronouns such as who, whom, which, that, and whose are essential grammatical elements in complex sentence construction and play a vital role in producing cohesive writing. Through a methodological approach combining descriptive analysis, literature studies, and field research involving 100 English major students, this research investigates various aspects of relative pronoun usage, including grammatical functions, contexts of use, common error patterns, and effective learning strategies. Research findings reveal that 75% of learner difficulties are related to misunderstandings in distinguishing between the use of who and whom, as well as confusion in the placement of that and which. Further analysis shows a significant correlation between mastery of relative pronouns and academic writing ability. This research also identifies and proposes a series of innovative learning strategies, including contextual approaches and corpus-based learning, which have proven effective in improving the understanding and use of relative pronouns. These findings provide substantial contributions to the development of English language learning materials and offer practical implications for teachers in designing more effective teaching strategies for the topic of relative pronouns.
