Abstract

Studying the orderly arrangement and purpose of speech sounds in a language is essential to understanding phonology. Phonemes, the smallest units of sound that define meaning, are the subject of phonology, which also studies how these sounds are patterned and controlled by phonotactics, stress, and intonation. Phonology examines the abstract, conceptual representations of sounds and their language functions, in contrast to phonetics, which examines the physical production and acoustic characteristics of sounds. Identifying phonemes, their allophones (variations), and the principles that explain sound alterations in various contexts—such as assimilation and deletion—are all part of phonological analysis. The flap realization of /t/ and /d/ sounds between vowels and the pronunciation variants of the plural morpheme -s ([s], [z], [ɪz]) are two examples of English phonological rules. All things considered, phonology offers crucial information about how sounds work to transmit meaning and structure in language communication.

Abstract

This article discusses the challenges faced by English language learners in understanding main and subordinate clauses. The research involved analyzing respondents who demonstrated difficulties in comprehending basic concepts, identifying conjunctions, and punctuating correctly. Findings revealed that 70% of respondents struggled to recognize conjunctions that mark subordinate clauses, and 60% of respondents experienced difficulties in punctuation. This research supports the importance of explicit instruction in learning clause structures, as well as the need for more visual and practice-based teaching strategies. Using diagrams, concept maps, and context-based exercises is expected to enhance students' understanding of clauses. The article suggests a shift from a theoretical approach to direct practice to help students overcome difficulties in learning clauses.

Abstract

The research explores the phonological inventory of different languages, investigating the phonemes, allophones, and distinctive features that shape their unique sound patterns. Furthermore, the paper delves into phonological processes, such as assimilation, dissimilation, and vowel harmony, which govern sound changes within a language. It investigated phonotactics, the study of permissible sound combinations and constraints, shedding light on syllable structures, onset and coda clusters, and phonological constraints that shape the phonotactic patterns in different languages. Additionally, the research explores the role of phonology in language acquisition, examining how children acquire the phonological rules and patterns of their native language. It also delves into the role of phonology in language variation and change, investigating how phonological shifts occur over time and contribute to dialectal and historical linguistic differences.Overall, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of phonology, highlighting its importance in understanding the intricacies of sound systems in language. By examining the foundational principles and patterns of phonology, this research aims to deepen our understanding of how sounds function and contribute to the rich tapestry of human communication.

Abstract

The research aims to identify the best method for Introducing phonology to beginners. The author of this study defined vital terms such as phonology and instructional approaches after analyzing appropriate sources and previous research. It explained how to introduce phonology using qualitative methods. It also answers the discussion and the question, "what is the most suitable method for beginners” After presenting the methods applied by the Fadhlul Qurro Islamic Boarding School participants for data collection, analysis, and outcomes, the researcher also discusses the results and concludes. This research was based on a comprehensive literature review on English phonology for second language learners. This approach does not involve empirical research or collecting new primary data but gathers information from relevant secondary sources such as textbooks, academic journals, online articles, and other trusted sources. The first step we took in this research method was to identify and select sources related to English phonology for second-language learners. These sources are then analyzed systematically to obtain an easily understood understanding. In the analysis process, we identify and evaluate English phonology for second language learners using relevant sources and analyze them to support the concepts. We also look at what problems students teaching English as a second language often find and how to overcome the problems. In addition, in this research method, we compare and rearrange information found in the literature to ensure that the information presented in this journal is consistent, accurate, and easy to understand.

Abstract

Language acquisition consists of three components, namely phonology, syntax, and semantics. However, these three components are not separate from each other in the process of language acquisition. Language acquisition experts, including traditional phonologists who adhere to a behavioristic approach, believe that children's phonetic changes occur because they are not yet perfect at imitating adult speech. However, according to this classical theory, phonetic changes do not occur in adults. Jakobson applies this theory to the phonemic level, whereas Halle argues that phonetic changes reflect the addition of a process or formula to the phonological system in adult.

Abstract

This journal aims to analyze the effectiveness of using phonetic symbols in the pronunciation of students who speak English as a foreign language (EFL) by measuring students' capabilities in pronouncing English reading or sentences with phonetic transcription. This study explores to what extent the use of phonetic symbols can help EFL students improve their pronunciation. The research method used Quantitative Descriptive by using table percentage with 25 EFL students in 4th semester in the English department from State Islamic University of North Sumatera as participants. These students were selected to read the sentences with phonetic transcription by using WhatsApp application and Voice note features to read the sentences. During the research, students weren't given teaching materials containing phonetic symbols and were asked to read and pronounce the English sentences with their pure ability. Data was collected through pronunciation tests. This test is intended to measure students' pronunciation abilities and the progress in reading sentences using phonetic symbols. The results showed that there were 72% of the English department students who were categorized as capable in reading sentences using phonetic transcription and 28% of all students are incapable of reading the sentences provided. It was concluded that the phonetic symbols helped EFL students to pronounce difficult sounds in English. In conclusion, the use of phonetic symbols proved effective in improving the pronunciation of EFL students. Phonetic symbols can be a useful tool in helping students improve their pronunciation in speaking English due to the capability of most students in reading English sentences.

Abstract

Because the ultimate goal of English instruction is for students to be able to communicate successfully in English, it is critical for EFL students to have a clear and comprehensible pronunciation of the language. As a result, English students must place a higher focus on their ability to accurately enunciate words. Learning good pronunciation is one of the most important things one can do to improve one's communication skills. However, many English as a foreign language students find it difficult to polish their pronunciation. Outside of Indonesia, students in Indonesia are required to study English as their first language. Students study English at school solely for the purpose of communication. As a result, they are unable to correctly enunciate any English word, despite the fact that they are expected to utilize English fluently outside of the classroom. The objective of this essay is to analyze the obstacles and reasons that Indonesian students have when attempting to accurately pronounce English consonants by analyzing past research. Following an examination of the study, it was discovered that Indonesian students had similar difficulty and inaccuracies in pronouncing English consonants. The first reason is because some consonants in English do not exist in Indo-European or their native language. This is due to the fact that English consonants were taken from other languages. The second issue is that most Indo-European students have difficulty pronouncing stop consonants such as / v / θ / ð / ʃ / ʒ / tʃ / and / dʒ /. These are the vowels and consonants that come at the end of words. The difficulties distinguishing between voiced (consonants with vibration) and voiceless (consonants without vibration) consonants, the inconsistent sounds for vowel letters in English and Bahasa Indonesia, vowel-letter combinations, silent letters, a lack of knowledge of English fricative sounds, a preference for speaking their mother tongue rather than English, a lack of experience correctly pronouncing things, and the sounds of two or three combinations of consonants.
