Abstract

The research aimed to identify the solidarity and social change represented by the presidents’ attitudes in the debates. The research applied positive discourse analysis purposed by Martin (2004) and the appraisal framework, especially the attitude system purposed by Martin and White (2005). The results showed that Prabowo used more attitudes in his argument than Jokowi. Prabowo tended to use more judgements and appreciations to show his attitudes. On the other hand, Jokowi preferred to use affect, which is desire and trust, to express his attitude. Solidarities were performed in their attitudes by means of concern toward audiences and by means of respect between appraisers. Thus solidarities are responsible for bringing social changes such as habits, behavior, mindset, value, and norms, and also in terms of the developments of technology and transportation.

Everyone can have different thoughts in solving a problem, including Anies Baswedan (AB) when dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, especially in DKI Jakarta. This study aims to reveal AB's thoughts on dealing with pandemics constructed by several online media. The research data are in the form of words, phrases, and sentence fragments which are indicated to contain AB's thoughts as the Governor of DKI Jakarta. The datawere collected from news about the handling of Covid-19 in several online media published in July–September 2021. This research aimed to investigate the patterns of selLing-and-buying transactions in a traditional market. The data sources of this research were the the sellers and the buyersin beef, chicken, fruit, grocery, and vegetable shopsof Pasar Waru, a traditional market, in Sidoarjo, Indonesia. The data were in the form of transactional conversations between the sellers and the buyers. Qualitative method was applied in this research by using the formula of generic structure potential theory proposed by Halliday & Hasan (1985) to describe the patterns of buying-and-selling transaction in the market. The result shows that generic structure elements in some shops at Pasar Waru comprises: greeting (G), sale initiation (SI), sale enquiry (SE), sale request (SR), sale compliance (SC), sale (S), purchase (P), purchase closure (PC), and finish (F). The grocery, beef, and chicken shop had a similar structure of G^SR^SC^S^P^PC, whereas the fruit shop showed its actual structure G^SI^SE^SR^SC^S^P^PC. Meanwhile, the vegetable shop had G^SI^SR^SC^S^P^PC structure.  As a whole, the five shops produced generic potential structure [(G).^] [{ SR^ SC }^S^] P^PC.

Abstract

Dialects in literary works give new challenges for translators. In the novel Tiger’s Voyage, one character with Jamaican English dialect is presented differently by the way of his speaking, so is in the Indonesian translation. This research aimed to analyze the translation strategies used for translating the dialects in Indonesian translation based on Berezowski’s dialectical translation strategies. This study applies qualitative method by utilizing data in the forms of dialogues spoken by the character. The result shows that six out of ten translation strategies were applied with artificial variety as the most dominant one. The application of the strategies was based on the phonological and syntactic deviation existing in the data, from which the Indonesian translator choses to keep the phonological deviation as the only modification remains. As an implication, the Indonesian translation of Tiger’s Voyage stays allegiant to the source text where Jamaican English dialect is presented through the character, even though it is made artificially. Through the modifications, however, the translation can still be comprehended by the target text readers. It is adjusted to the target language by adhering to domestication technique to anticipate the readers from confusion.
