Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine students’ learning barriers in understanding integral concepts through their thinking processes with the perspective of APOS theory (Action, Process, Object-Scheme). This research applied qualitative research with a case study method. The samples of this research were 19 civil engineering students who had contracted calculus courses and who had been given a written test. The results of the written test were divided into three different categories – they are comprehension ability is high (score ), medium (60  Score <  ) and low (score < 60). Deep   interviews were conducted with three representative students who took the written test and met the criteria    for each group. The results of the interviews showed that students in the high category still had conceptual ontogenic learning obstacle despite passing the APOS path. Students in the moderate category be able to reach the encapsulation stage but they had not been able to de-encapsulate it to the process. They had conceptual and epistemological ontogenical learning obstacles. Whereas the low category students had the tendency to only reach the action stage and had difficulty in doing initial de-encapsulation due to lack of learning experience in the prerequisite materials. The learning obstacles they experienced were psychological and conceptual-ontogenical learning obstacles. Aggregately, the students tended to experience conceptual ontogenic learning obstacle. The result of this study is expected to be used as a basis for designing a hypothetical learning trajectory in future research.

Abstract

The objective of textbook study is to create high-quality textbooks. Analysis was done using a praxeological-didactical analysis (PDA) method. PDA offers space to analyze curriculum materials, such as math textbooks, which are the outcome of human action in the anthropology of a specific nation's society. There are 10 types of tasks given in the mathematics textbook on measurement of spatial figures and seven techniques are identified as possible ways to complete the tasks. The justification of praxis is that there are three emerging technologies and two theories that are used as the final direction of the given task type. There is a sequence of task composition at the start with loads at level 2 and level 3 that can affect student readiness. Psychologically, it is regarded as difficult at first, which can lead to students becoming disinterested as well as bored, thus experiencing difficulties, creating ontogenetic obstacles. The other predicted learning obstacles identified in this textbook are epistemological and didactic obstacles. All the findings from this analysis can be applied to continuously raise the standard of the currently available mathematics textbooks.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore an Indonesian prospective mathematics teacher’s lesson planning and identify its characteristics of mathematical task design from the viewpoint of the anthropological theory of the didactic. The well-documented activities concerning lesson planning developed by the prospective mathematics teacher in her experiment to conduct a study on mathematics teaching were used as the primary data to be analyzed. Part of the anthropological theory of the didactic, namely mathematical praxeology, was used as the theoretical framework to analyze and explore the mathematical tasks design, their techniques, theoretical arguments of the techniques used, and theories underpinning the theoretical discourses. The study points out mathematical praxeology for each mathematical task included in the lesson plan analyzed. In addition, this study also figured out the characteristics of the mathematical praxeology of the lesson design developed by the prospective teacher.

Abstract

Teachers play a crucial role in disseminating knowledge in educational settings, typically adhering to a credulist-testimonial approach outlined in pedagogical literature. Consequently, students often acquire knowledge through this method, potentially leading to discrepancies between their conceptual understanding and the intended educational objectives. This study investigates the phenomenon of learning obstacles encountered by junior high school students, with a particular emphasis on mathematics education. It is part of a series of Didactical Design Research (DDR) projects aimed at developing effective instructional materials. Employing an interpretive paradigm within the DDR framework, the study adopts a qualitative approach utilizing hermeneutic phenomenology design. Various research tools such as diagnostic assessments, interview guidelines, observation sheets, and audio recordings are employed. Data analysis is conducted using the Constant Comparative Method (CCM). The findings highlight ontogenic, didactic, and epistemological obstacles students face, stemming from factors such as a lack of interest in mathematics, ineffective material presentation, and misconceptions regarding set concepts. These results underscore the importance of educators employing effective teaching strategies to help students overcome these obstacles and succeed in their mathematics education.

Abstract

The conception of functions, defined as the relationship between magnitudes or sets of ordered pairs, varies among students depending on the contextualization of the concept within the curriculum, notably in school textbooks. This investigation endeavors to scrutinize the approach taken by Indonesian textbooks in introducing the function concept at the lower secondary school level. An eighth-grade mathematics textbook was scrutinized utilizing praxeology, the fundamental construct of the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic. The analytical process unfolded in three main phases: examination of the praxis block, analysis of the logos block, and evaluation of the textbook's praxeological structure in collaboration with experts and educators. The examination revealed that the Indonesian textbook organizes functions into three distinct local praxeological frameworks: functions as sets, bijective functions, and functions as relationships between magnitudes. The praxis primarily emphasizes tasks and techniques for functions formulated by sets, shaping the landscape of function learning in Indonesia. Consequently, a notable epistemological gap within logos stems from the disparity between two conceptions of functions: functions as sets and analytical expressions. These findings underscore the necessity for an alternative praxeological arrangement of functions, mainly to bridge the divide between the set-theoretical definition and the analytical expression of a function.

Abstract

This study aims to determine students learning obstacles in probability material based on their probabilistic thinking (PT) level using the theory of didactical situation (TDS) perspective. This is qualitative research with the case study method. The subject consisted of 23 grade 9 students in junior high school who had studied the material and had taken the test. The test results were used to classify students depending on their PT level using the framework developed by Graha A. Jones. Furthermore, interviews were performed with three representative students from each PT level. The interviews indicated that students in each PT level continue to face learning obstacles, which include instrumental ontogenic and epistemological obstacles. The lowest PT level demonstrated a more complex and comprehensive learning obstacle in all constructs of PT. From the TDS perspective, all students who are at various levels of PT have reached an action situation. Only 33% of the students at the subjective level and 83% of the students at the transition level reached the formulation situation. Still, students at that level needed help to reach the other two situations. Unlike the two previous levels, students at the level of quantitative informal thinking can achieve situations of validation and institutionalization.

Abstract

Mathematics textbooks are essential tools for facilitating the achievement of learning objectives, yet their use varies across classrooms, even when the same mathematical concepts are being taught. This study aims to investigate students' understanding of geometrical similarity through praxeological analysis within the framework of the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD). The analysis identifies differences in the structuring of geometrical similarity tasks between Indonesian and Singaporean textbooks. According to ATD praxeology, mathematical content is analyzed through the "praxis" and "logos" blocks, where praxis encompasses task types (T) and techniques (τ), while logos involves technology (θ) and theory (Θ). The findings highlight distinct priorities in how geometrical similarity is presented in textbooks from both countries, with implications for students’ conceptual and procedural understanding. Specifically, the absence of pantograph tasks in Singaporean textbooks and the lack of scale factor exercises in Indonesian textbooks reflect differences in knowledge construction and task emphasis. These variations impact students' ability to relate textbook knowledge to real-world applications. The study underscores the significance of incorporating a diverse range of task designs and practical experiences to enhance students' geometric reasoning abilities. A well-structured textbook not only supports students in achieving learning objectives but also fosters a continuous process of building, connecting, and deepening their mathematical understanding.

Abstract

Educational research has consistently highlighted that learning obstacles stem not only from the design of learning situations but also from curriculum structures and textbooks, which are pivotal learning resources. Despite the growing body of literature, limited studies focus on the specific challenges posed by the design of learning materials, particularly in early algebra within the Indonesian context. This study addresses the gap by analyzing the grade VII mathematics textbook in the Merdeka Curriculum, with a focus on linear equations with one variable, to uncover learning obstacles in early algebra. Utilizing Didactical Design Research (DDR), a qualitative approach, the research examines the praxeological components of the textbook—tasks (T), techniques (τ), technology (θ), and theory (Θ). The findings indicate three primary categories of learning obstacles: ontogenic, epistemological, and didactic. Notably, the analysis reveals that the design of linear equation content in the textbook is non-systemic and lacks epistemic coherence, posing significant challenges for learners. This study contributes to the understanding of curriculum design by identifying specific obstacles in the Merdeka Curriculum's grade VII mathematics textbook and underscores the need for more systemic and epistemically aligned textbook development. Future research should extend this analysis to other textbooks across various grade levels to determine if these findings are consistent within the broader curriculum framework.
