Abstract

Algebraic thinking ability are important for students to master and use algebraic concepts in various situations. Students with good algebraic thinking ability will find it easier to solve real-world problems and understand more abstract mathematical concepts. This study aims to describe students' algebraic thinking ability on linear equation material. Thus, the type of research used is phenomenology with a qualitative descriptive approach. The participants in this study consisted of 37 students; six students with heterogeneous abilities (high, medium, low) were then selected. The research subjects were determined by purposive sampling based on the pattern of answers representing the phenomenon that occurred. Data were collected using algebraic thinking ability tests and interviews to fulfill the validity of the data. The results showed that: 1) students with high algebraic thinking ability can use all indicators of algebraic thinking well. 2) students with medium algebraic thinking ability have difficulty in the indicators of analytical thinking, modeling, and dynamic thinking. 3) students with low algebraic thinking ability have difficulty in all indicators of algebraic thinking, namely generalization, modeling, abstraction, analytical thinking, dynamic thinking, and organization. So, teacher efforts are needed to provide students with an understanding of algebraic thinking so that students can solve math problems well.

Abstract

Indonesia’s dairy industry has undergone substantial development over the past decade, yet it continues to face persistent challenges arising from market liberalization and intensifying global competition. The BUSEP ratio policy, introduced in 1982, was designed to protect smallholder dairy farmers by mandating the absorption of domestically produced fresh milk by processing industries. This study aims to systematically examine the impacts of this policy on the welfare of key stakeholders: government, producers, and consumers, while also identifying the resulting economic and social implications. The research employs a systematic literature review combined with static comparative analysis using secondary data. Comparisons are drawn between conditions before and after the abolition of the BUSEP ratio policy, with specific attention to changes in producer surplus and consumer surplus. In addition, the study assesses the influence of a 5% import tariff on domestic milk pricing structures and supply conditions. The findings reveal that while the BUSEP ratio policy increased producer surplus, it significantly reduced consumer surplus, ultimately leading to a decline in net social welfare. The policy’s revocation in 1998 did not yield the anticipated benefits, as import prices surged sharply during the monetary crisis, preventing processors from optimizing alternative supply sources. Heightened competition with international producers further underscores the need for domestic farmers to enhance efficiency and competitiveness. Overall, the study indicates that existing policies have not optimally improved welfare outcomes. Consequently, there is a pressing need for more adaptive policy frameworks that prioritize production efficiency, price stability, and sustained protection for Indonesia’s dairy farmers.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the hidden mathematical concepts behind the rice farming activities of Pandanwangi Cianjur. The research method is qualitative research with an ethnographic approach. The research location is in Pandanwangi Cultural Village, Bunikasih Village, Warungkondang District, Cianjur Regency, West Java. Pandanwangi Cultural Village was deliberately built by the Cianjur Regency Government to further introduce pandanwangi rice, which is the superior local variety of Cianjur Regency. Pandawangi rice farmers' cultural activities contain mathematical concepts that arise when determining seed class, number of seeds, nursery preparation, final seed selection with salt solution, seeding in nurseries, nursery maintenance, preparation of planting land, planting, fertilization in planting areas, planting maintenance, harvest, and post-harvest. The findings of this study show that there are mathematical concepts in agricultural activities on geometric content, including determining points, lines, angles, the area of flat shapes, the similarity of flat shapes, and algebra, including comparisons, percentages, and social arithmetic. The results of the research can be used as a teaching module to facilitate learning for students in the school curriculum.

Abstract

Abstract. Setyaningrum D, Suhita CP, Paryanto E, Ningsih H, Arifin Z, Suryadi D, Suprihatin DN, Nurhidayati F, Pradana AGR, Hantari D. 2025. Effect of organic fertilizer types and dosage on yield and nutrient uptake of red ginger in an Alfisol. Asian J Agric 9: 636-644. Declining red ginger production in Indonesia, partly due to reduced optimal land availability, has prompted the use of suboptimal soils, such as Alfisols are known to be fertile soils with relatively high concentrations of essential nutrients. This study evaluated the effects of animal manure type (cow, goat, and chicken) and application dosage (0, 10, 20, and 30 tons.ha-¹) on yield performance and nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) uptake of red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. rubrum) in Alfisol. A randomized complete block design with a split-plot arrangement was applied. Results showed that both manure type and dosage significantly influenced yield and nutrient uptake. Goat manure at 30 tons.ha?¹ produced the highest fresh weight, biomass, rhizome weight, and N and P uptake. Rhizome weight and volume were positively correlated with N and P uptake, indicating that improved nutrient absorption efficiency contributed to yield enhancement. Increasing manure dosage consistently elevated biomass, rhizome volume, and K uptake, with optimal results at 30 tons.ha-¹. These findings demonstrate that organic fertilization, particularly with goat manure at 30 tons.ha-¹, is an effective strategy to boost red ginger productivity and nutrient use efficiency on marginal Alfisol soil. The approach supports sustainable cultivation and could help meet increasing market demand, although long-term impacts on soil health require further investigation.

Abstract

Statistical thinking is an essential competency for prospective mathematics teachers in responding to data-driven decision making within the context of Society 5.0. However, learning obstacles frequently emerge in higher education statistics courses due to instructional practices that emphasize procedural computation rather than conceptual and contextual understanding. This study aims to describe the implementation of a didactical design to reduce students’ learning obstacles in statistical thinking through the topic of measures of central tendency. A qualitative descriptive method was employed involving 38 mathematics education students enrolled in an introductory statistics course. The didactical design integrated the Theory of Didactical Situations (TDS) and the DORA model (Describe, Organize, Represent, Analyze–Interpret) and was delivered through an interactive e-module developed on the AnyFlip platform. Data were collected using a post-implementation statistical thinking test based on DORA, classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and reflective field notes. Learning activities were organized into four TDS stages action, formulation, validation, and institutionalization to support reflective and adidactical learning processes. The results indicate that students were able to construct statistical concepts more meaningfully and reduce previously identified learning obstacles, particularly in linking numerical results with graphical representations. In conclusion, the integration of TDS and the DORA model supported by interactive e-modules effectively enhances students’ statistical thinking skills, as evidenced by the reduction of learning obstacles among prospective mathematics teachers.

Abstract

The professional competence of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) teachers in teaching ratio material is a vital factor in improving students’ understanding of mathematics, making it important to examine MI teachers’ knowledge of mathematics content. This study aims to analyze teachers’ professional skills, including their understanding of the concept of ratios, their attitudes toward preparing the learning process, such as creating teaching materials aligned with the curriculum, and their understanding of students’ characteristics and how they design learning. The results of this study provide an initial foundation for further research, which can help teachers develop learning methods through didactic studies. The subjects of this research are MI grade VI teachers in Bandung Regency, from six schools. The method used is a descriptive approach with a prospective analysis stage based on Didactical Design Research (DDR). Data collection involved teacher reflection sheets, exploratory interviews, observations, and document reviews. The findings indicate that teachers’ professional competence in knowledge of learning content and teaching methods remains at level 2, while their understanding of students’ characteristics and learning styles is at level 3. Reflection sheets and interviews reveal that teachers face difficulties beginning with defining ratios, particularly in understanding that the ratio of a to b differs from the ratio of b to a, and in solving problems involving equal proportions. Often, teachers plan their lessons with a simple sequence of materials in a journal, without considering the epistemic and systemic aspects of the content or validating their presentation and practice questions found in textbooks. MI teachers also find it challenging to select concrete teaching methods for ratios before moving to an abstract understanding, especially given the limited time. Based on these findings, there is a clear need for programs to improve teachers’ competence through didactic studies, equipping them to anticipate and address potential obstacles and enabling them to design compelling learning experiences. Since teachers’ professional competence in teaching ratios directly impacts students’ understanding of math, exploring their content knowledge is essential. This study contributes to empowering teachers through didactic design research, a necessary approach to enhancing teacher competence.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between the knowledge prescribed in the school curriculum, the knowledge enacted by mathematics teachers, and the knowledge constructed by students in learning trigonometric ratios through the perspective of Didactic Transposition Theory. A qualitative intrinsic case study was conducted with one mathematics teacher and 22 tenth-grade students in an Indonesian senior high school. Data were collected from curriculum documents, teaching notes, classroom observations, interviews, and two tests designed to capture students’ conceptual understanding. The data were analyzed using document analysis, content analysis, and descriptive analysis. The findings show that although students’ understanding of trigonometric ratios improved during instruction, the enacted classroom practices mainly emphasized trigonometric ratios as fixed relationships among the sides of right triangles. Consequently, students tended to interpret sine, cosine, and tangent primarily as geometric ratios rather than as functions of angles. This emphasis limited students’ ability to connect geometric reasoning with functional interpretations of trigonometric relationships. These results highlight the importance of strengthening instructional coherence in curriculum implementation so that classroom teaching better supports the development of both geometric and functional understanding of trigonometry.

Abstract

This study investigates how GeoGebra Classroom supports students in overcoming epistemological obstacles and enhancing mathematical literacy in learning exponents through Bruner’s representational approach. This qualitative phenomenological study involved 30 eighth-grade students from a junior high school in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, with 12 students purposively selected for learning sessions using GeoGebra Classroom. Three students representing low, medium, and high mathematical abilities were interviewed in depth. The research instruments included observation sheets, interview guides, and documentation of student learning activities. Data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis, and were analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The study explored students’ learning processes through enactive, iconic, and symbolic stages. The findings indicate that GeoGebra Classroom facilitates gradual and exploratory learning through concrete manipulation and visual representations, enabling students to develop a deeper understanding of exponent concepts. However, some students experienced difficulties when transitioning to symbolic representations. This study contributes to digital mathematics education by proposing an instructional model that integrates technological tools with representational learning theory to enhance conceptual understanding and strengthen students’ mathematical literacy.

Abstract

Strengthening partnerships between early childhood education institutions and parents is an important strategy in supporting optimal child growth and development. However, facts on the ground show that parental involvement in the learning process is still limited, so there is a need for innovative learning media that connects the roles of teachers and parents. The community service activity aims to improve the understanding and skills of early childhood teachers and parents in using contextual thematic learning media based on multicultural wisdom. The community service method involved counseling, training, and collaborative assistance. There were 25 participants consisting of PAUD teachers and parents of students. The evaluation results showed a significant increase in understanding from a pre-test score of 55.8 to a post-test score of 88.4, with an average increase of 32.6 points. These findings show that the innovation of learning media based on multicultural values not only strengthens the role of parents in children's education but also creates a more contextual and inclusive learning environment. This community service activity contributes to the establishment of a sustainable partnership between early childhood education and parents in supporting the quality of early childhood education.
