Abstract

Reading interest among Indonesian communities remains relatively low, including in Montong Are Village, Kediri District, West Lombok. Observations show that the majority of residents, particularly children and adolescents, tend to spend more time on gadgets than on reading activities. To address this issue, the KKN PMD-Literasi team from the University of Mataram implemented the Literacy House and Mobile Library programs as strategic initiatives to foster a reading culture in the community. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing direct observation and documentation to assess the community’s reading interest. The results indicated that the Literacy House successfully attracted children to read regularly through the provision of illustrated books, interactive programs such as read-aloud sessions, storytelling, creative writing classes, and traditional games as engagement tools. Meanwhile, the Mobile Library reached remote hamlets, enabling children with limited access to the Literacy House to participate in reading activities. Both programs demonstrated positive impacts in increasing reading interest, boosting the frequency of visits to literacy facilities, and reducing gadget dependency among children and adolescents in Montong Are Village.

Abstract

Science education at the elementary school level plays a crucial role in establishing students’ foundations for critical thinking and problem-solving skills, particularly in the context of 21st-century learning. This study aimed to examine the effects of the Jigsaw-type Cooperative Learning model and self-efficacy on elementary school students’ scientific literacy skills. A quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. The population consisted of all fourth-grade students at SDN 26 Mataram, with a purposive sampling technique applied. Research instruments included a self-efficacy questionnaire and a scientific literacy test. Data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov and Shapiro–Wilk normality tests, as well as a paired-sample t-test. The results revealed a significant increase in scientific literacy scores by 15.25 points following the implementation of the Jigsaw learning model. This improvement was accompanied by enhanced student self-efficacy, which fostered active engagement and responsibility in the learning process. The study concludes that the Jigsaw-type Cooperative Learning model is effective in improving both scientific literacy and self-efficacy among elementary school students, offering an active learning alternative aligned with the demands of modern curricula.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low learning interest and science learning outcomes of fourth-grade elementary school students in ecosystem and food web topics, which were attributed to the use of traditional teaching methods that were less engaging. The study aimed to analyze the effects of learning interest and the use of animated video media on students’ science learning outcomes. This research employed a quantitative approach with an ex post facto correlational design. The population consisted of all fourth-grade students at SDN 26 Mataram (29 students), who were selected as the sample through total sampling. The research instruments included Likert-scale questionnaires to measure learning interest and the use of animated video media, as well as a posttest to assess learning outcomes. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s product–moment correlation, multiple regression analysis, t-tests, and F-tests. The results indicated that 60% of students had a high level of learning interest, with an average learning outcome score of 82, and a significant relationship was found between learning interest and learning outcomes (p < 0.05). The study concludes that animated video media are effective in simultaneously enhancing students’ learning interest and science learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of Smart TV as an interactive medium in developing communication skills of elementary school students and identify its supporting and inhibiting factors. The research uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach involving interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The informants consist of students, teachers, and school principals who are directly involved in Smart TV-based learning. The results of the study show that Smart TV makes a positive contribution to increasing student motivation, focus, and communication stimulus through the presentation of multimodal materials such as educational videos, Wordwall applications, Liveworksheets, and internet browsers. This media helps students be more courageous in responding, acquiring new vocabulary, and engaging in classroom interactions. However, its effectiveness is still hampered by limited facilities (two units for the entire school), inconsistent frequency of use, affective barriers such as lack of confidence, and linguistic barriers due to the dominance of the use of the Sasak language in daily conversations. The practice of translanguaging carried out by teachers helps clarify the meaning of the material but needs to be directed to strengthen Indonesian-based academic communication skills. This study concludes that Smart TV has great potential to improve students' communication skills if managed systematically and supported by the right pedagogical strategy.

Abstract

This study explores the role of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in developing social-emotional skills in children aged 5–6 years at TK Restu Amanda. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews with teachers, and documentation of project activities. The research focused on a project titled “My Mini Garden at School,” which engaged children in collaborative planning, planting, nurturing, and reflecting on their plants. Findings indicate that PjBL enhances children’s self-confidence, collaboration, emotional regulation, and social communication. Children actively participated in group discussions, shared responsibilities, managed frustration, and expressed pride in their accomplishments. The teacher acted as a facilitator, providing scaffolding and promoting meaningful interactions within the zone of proximal development. These results suggest that PjBL is an effective pedagogical approach for fostering social-emotional learning (SEL) in early childhood education, particularly when adapted to local contexts and combined with authentic, hands-on experiences. The study contributes both theoretically and practically by demonstrating the integration of constructivist and socio-cultural learning principles in early childhood settings.

Abstract

This Classroom Action Research (CAR) aimed to examine the improvement of students’ character through Civics Education (Pancasila and Civic Education/PPKn) learning. The research was conducted in two cycles, with each cycle consisting of three learning meetings. Data were collected using observation sheets, questionnaires, and tests focusing on three main character aspects: honesty, discipline, and hard work. In Cycle I, the observation results showed that students’ character development was still at a moderate level, as indicated by varied frequencies across the measured aspects. In Cycle II, there was a noticeable improvement in all character aspects, particularly in honesty and discipline, as reflected by an increase in the frequency of “always” and “often” responses and the elimination of “never” responses. The findings indicate that the implementation of PPKn learning effectively contributes to strengthening students’ character development. Therefore, it can be concluded that PPKn learning plays a significant role in enhancing students’ character values when applied through systematic and reflective classroom action research.
