Abstract

This research discussed the Buginese and Javanese phonological interference and the factors that influenced that case from the students in senior high school. The method that was used in this research was qualitative research. The researchers collected the data with nine fricative consonants (f, v, θ, ð, s, z, ʃ, ʒ, h) by reading test, recording and interview, then analyzed with the theory by Weinreich (1979). The object was the Buginese and Javanese students of Senior High School 2 of East Luwu. The data showed that phonological interference produced by Buginese and Javanese are only two of three kinds of phonological interference by Crystal (2003). From Buginese students, the researchers only found one category of phonological interference which was sound replacements on consonant {f}, meanwhile on Javanese students found two categories of phonological interference, that were sound addition on sound {h} and sound replacement on sound {ʃ}. On the other hand, there are two factors that caused phonological interference of Buginese and Javanese students in this research, such as bilingual background and disloyalty to the target language. The factors that were found related to the factors mentioned by Weinreich (1979). Keywords: Phonological Interference, Buginese Phonological Interference, Javanese Phonological Interference

Abstract

The paper is to explain linguistical image of Rudyard Kipling in the poetry “The Ballad of East and West” and to relate with family of language over the world. It is found, the words “west” and “east” refer to the different location but it is from the similar pronunciation. It like “atala” in Sanskrit, “od” in Greek, and has relation with the word “Atlantic” in English. The data will be approached by the philosophy of language, particularly in the perspective of the fixed thing (Greek: esse) and the changed thing (percipi). The result, the word has the same essence. The trace of family of the word “east” and “west” could be proved in the language of Austronesian, particularly in Javanese poem. There is hybridity of reality in the area of language in the world. It could be recommended that an evidence in language is a medium of learning related with education, culture, and reality of Austronesian. This research was conducted in the tenth grade of the second semester at SMK IT Baitunnur Punggur. The researchersd used Research and Development (R&D). In this case, the research only resulted in a product design, which was internally verified using the opinions of experts and practitioners and did not lead to the production of goods on a global scale. The pre-test and post-test resulted of the developed product, as well as the validation findings by a group of media experts, material experts, and students, were considered valid. Based on the validation results from two lecturers and two teachers, as well as material experts and media experts, the percentage of feasibility assessment with "very feasible" criteria was 92.5%. The product was considered effective for use if the students' pre-test and post-test results show a post-test score greater than the pre-test score. The result product could foster interest in enthusiasm in learning students to be better. It advances a great potential for the development research in developing english comic strips in teaching reading. Keywords: Comic Strips, Teaching Reading, English Educational Comics

Abstract

This study examines the differences and similarities in prepositional patterns between Batak Toba and English languages through a contrastive analysis of narrative texts. The phenomenon in focus is the variation in preposition usage between these two languages, which often poses difficulties for native Batak Toba speakers learning English. The objective of this research is to identify and compare prepositional patterns in both languages and analyzes their implications for English language learning among Batak Toba speakers. The method employed is a qualitative contrastive analysis with a descriptive approach. Data was obtained from three pairs of equivalent narrative texts in English and Batak Toba. The results reveal significant differences in the use of spatial and temporal prepositions, as well as some similarities in prepositions indicating abstract relationships. The main difference lies in the greater number and variety of prepositions in English, while Batak Toba tends to use simpler and more limited prepositions. The implications of this research provide valuable insights for developing effective English language learning strategies for Batak Toba speakers, considering positive and negative transfer between the two languages.

Abstract

This autoethnographic study explores my personal journey of learning English, framed through the lens of sociocultural theory. By reflecting on key stages of my life, from early childhood exposure and formal schooling to informal learning through media and peer interaction, the research describes how language development is not a linear or purely academic process, but one shaped by social relationships, cultural environments, and evolving identity. Drawing on Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory and related scholarship, the narrative traces how various mediators, including family, teachers, technology, and community have influenced my motivation, confidence, and sense of belonging in English-speaking contexts. The findings reveal that language learning is deeply intertwined with identity negotiation and cultural integration, culminating in a sense of ownership over the English language. This study contributes to the field by emphasizing the emotional, reflective, and personal dimensions of language acquisition, which are often overlooked in traditional second language research. It suggests that incorporating learners’ lived experiences, informal learning practices, and identity development into language education can foster more inclusive and meaningful pedagogies. The research also opens pathways for further studies using narrative and qualitative approaches to better understand the complex, socioculturally embedded nature of language learning.

Abstract

This systematic review examines the application of genre-based pedagogy in English as a foreign language (EFL) academic writing instruction between 2015 and 2025. It addresses persistent challenges faced by learners, particularly their limited familiarity with academic genres and difficulties in managing disciplinary writing conventions. Genre-based pedagogy, which foregrounds explicit instruction in genre structures and communicative purposes, has gained recognition as an effective framework for enhancing learners’ academic writing competence. Through a systematic search of peer-reviewed studies indexed in Scopus, this review synthesizes evidence on instructional approaches, learning outcomes, and teaching contexts. Findings reveal that genre-based instruction has been widely implemented in secondary and tertiary education, consistently leading to improved writing performance. Gains are especially evident in organization, cohesion, and genre awareness, alongside increased learner motivation, engagement, and confidence. The reviewed studies employed diverse models, ranging from traditional genre cycles and process-oriented strategies to technology-supported approaches using digital platforms. This diversity highlights the adaptability of genre-based pedagogy and its compatibility with learner-centered instruction. Nonetheless, significant gaps remain: most studies are short-term, emphasize conventional essay genres, and give limited attention to multimodal or interdisciplinary writing. Moreover, inadequate teacher preparation, particularly among preservice educators, continues to hinder effective implementation. To strengthen future research and practice, the review recommends longitudinal studies, broader genre coverage, and systematic teacher training. Overall, the synthesis affirms genre-based pedagogy as a flexible and dynamic approach that fosters both cognitive development and affective engagement in EFL academic writing.
