Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the content validity of geometry teaching materials designed for Grade VII junior high school students. These materials were developed using the Connecting, Organizing, Reflecting, and Extending (CORE) instructional model, supported by Wingeom software, to enhance students' conceptual understanding of geometry. To assess validity, expert validation was conducted using structured questionnaires. Six categories of experts participated: subject-matter experts, media experts, mathematicians, school mathematicians, language experts, and learning evaluation experts. Each category included five experts. The Content Validity Index (CVI) was employed to quantify the degree of agreement among experts regarding the relevance of the materials. The results showed high content validity across all expert groups. Specifically, the s-CVI values were 0.96 for media experts, 0.98 for subject-matter experts, 0.97 for mathematicians, 0.96 for school mathematicians, and similarly high scores for evaluation and language experts. These scores exceed the commonly accepted threshold for strong content validity (s-CVI ≥ 0.90). The high CVI values indicate that the geometry teaching materials are valid in terms of content, language, instructional design, and evaluation components. Consequently, the materials are appropriate for use in further research related to mathematics learning processes at the junior high school level.

Abstract

An essential part of statistical literacy is a person's fundamental ability to read, understand, interpret, compile, represent, process, and critically evaluate statistical information. In addition, the ability to interpret and communicate the data that has been obtained is also part of statistical literacy. This study aims to analyze students' statistical literacy level and the challenges faced in statistical literacy and provide recommendations for improving competence. The study used a quantitative approach with an online survey involving mathematics education students. Data collection used a researcher-developed survey instrument, which was used consisting of 15 items covering essential, intermediate, and upper competencies. The population was students of the Mathematics Education study program. The sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique based on the criteria of students who have taken statistics courses. The survey was administered online. The results showed that the students' statistical literacy level was in the low category. Students have difficulty understanding the basic concepts of statistics in essential competencies, interpreting data in intermediate competencies, and communicating statistically in upper competencies. This challenge is influenced by low motivation and interest in learning. These findings suggest several strategies to improve statistical literacy competencies, including developing a more effective curriculum, increasing learning motivation, and strengthening basic math skills. Implementing these recommendations is expected to enhance the quality of statistics learning in the Mathematics Education study program and produce mathematics educators who are competent in statistical literacy.

Abstract

Students' perceptions of the difficulty of mathematics often influence their mathematical abilities. Students who possess a strong Adversity Quotient (AQ) are likelier to demonstrate improved mathematical abilities, particularly in mathematical communication abilities. This study examines the relationship between mathematical communication ability and students' Adversity Quotient (AQ). The research employed a correlational method, with a sample of 31 ninth-grade students from a junior high school in Bandung City during the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through mathematical communication ability tests and an Adversity Quotient (AQ) questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed in two stages: an Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA), which included normality and linearity tests, followed by Confirmatory Data Analysis (CDA), which used the Pearson correlation test. The results revealed a correlation coefficient of 0.672, indicating a medium-level relationship between students' mathematical communication ability and their Adversity Quotient (AQ).

Abstract

Mathematics, essential for fostering problem-solving skills, plays a critical role in education. However, the lack of creativity and flexibility among students in solving complex problems like ill-structured problems (ISPs) in exponential material indicates significant learning obstacles. This study aimed to identify and analyze the learning obstacles faced by senior high school students and explore their creative mathematical thinking abilities when addressing ISPs in exponents. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with a Didactical Design Research (DDR) framework, data were gathered through tests, observations, and semi-structured interviews. The study involved 40 purposively selected tenth-grade students from Bandung. Findings reveal that students excel in fluency but struggle with flexibility and originality. Learning obstacles include ontogenic (limited conceptual understanding), didactic (restricted instructional variety), and epistemological (context-dependent reasoning). These obstacles impede students' creative thinking development, especially in producing unique solutions and utilizing alternative approaches. The study concludes that addressing these obstacles requires innovative teaching strategies, such as problem-based learning and didactical designs emphasizing exploration and creativity. These strategies can enhance creative thinking in mathematics, benefiting students' adaptability in academic and real-world challenges. Future research should focus on implementing and refining such designs across various mathematical topics.

Abstract

Algebraic thinking ability are important for students to master and use algebraic concepts in various situations. Students with good algebraic thinking ability will find it easier to solve real-world problems and understand more abstract mathematical concepts. This study aims to describe students' algebraic thinking ability on linear equation material. Thus, the type of research used is phenomenology with a qualitative descriptive approach. The participants in this study consisted of 37 students; six students with heterogeneous abilities (high, medium, low) were then selected. The research subjects were determined by purposive sampling based on the pattern of answers representing the phenomenon that occurred. Data were collected using algebraic thinking ability tests and interviews to fulfill the validity of the data. The results showed that: 1) students with high algebraic thinking ability can use all indicators of algebraic thinking well. 2) students with medium algebraic thinking ability have difficulty in the indicators of analytical thinking, modeling, and dynamic thinking. 3) students with low algebraic thinking ability have difficulty in all indicators of algebraic thinking, namely generalization, modeling, abstraction, analytical thinking, dynamic thinking, and organization. So, teacher efforts are needed to provide students with an understanding of algebraic thinking so that students can solve math problems well.

Abstract

Understanding a concept is not only for mastering the next concept. It is the foundational skill used to solve mathematical problems. This study aims to explore students' conceptual understanding. This research is qualitative research with phenomenology. The participants in this study consisted of 18 eighth-grade students from one of Bandung's private secondary schools. After the students were given the test, six students were selected as research subjects. This aims to ensure that data can be obtained thoroughly and comprehensively. Data collection techniques included tests, interviews, and observations, with research instruments comprising a test and an interview guideline. Data saturation has been achieved. The results of this study are as follows: 1) students with relational understanding are fewer in number than students with instrumental understanding. 2) students find it most difficult to use the interconnections of various mathematical concepts in solving problems. 3) students' difficulties are due to their lack of ability in the concept of basic operations and their lack of understanding of the problems. Therefore, teachers need to strengthen students' understanding of basic operations and the concepts of mean, mode, and median to effectively connect these concepts with their problems.

Abstract

The curriculum in Indonesia has continued to evolve, particularly with the introduction of the Merdeka Curriculum in 2021. In 2022, mathematics textbooks aligned with the Merdeka Curriculum were published. This study aims to analyze the probability material in the Grade 10 mathematics textbook for senior high school based on the Merdeka Curriculum using a praxeological approach. The research method employed is qualitative with a hermeneutic praxeological approach. The findings of this study are as follows: (1) the praxeological analysis identified four structures, namely task data (T), techniques (t), technology (q), and theory (Q); (2) each task T1, T2, T3, and T4 and their respective subtasks were found to utilize only one technique (t), which is perceptual, based on students’ observations; and (3) content and contextual analysis revealed errors that could lead to potential didactical learning obstacles and a lack of sub-material on compound events.

Abstract

Berdasarkan pemetaan digit–arah bilah, disusun pula model konseptual steganografi: penyisipan pesan biner melalui variasi orientasi bilah tanpa mengubah karakter visual motif. Temuan ini menegaskan potensi motif anyaman sebagai media representasi informasi sekaligus konteks budaya untuk pembelajaran matematika diskret melalui tugas bertahap (pengodean motif, identifikasi unit ulang/periode, penurunan aturan modulo, dan konversi bilangan). Motif weaving on the anjung wall of the Rumah Bubungan Tinggi exhibits repeating patterns that can be modeled as binary sequences. This qualitative exploratory study encodes strip orientation as 1 and 0, then examines periodicity, formulates modulo-based rules, and performs binary–decimal–character conversions to connect traditional motifs with the basic structure of digital information encoding. The results show that the motifs form deterministic binary sequences with specific periods that can be described using modulo functions. Based on digit-to-orientation mapping, the study also proposes a conceptual motif-based steganography model: embedding binary messages through variations in strip orientation without altering the motif’s overall visual character. These findings highlight the potential of weaving motifs as both an information representation medium and a cultural context for discrete mathematics learning through stepwise tasks (motif encoding, identification of repeating units/periods, derivation of modulo rules, and number conversion).
