Abstract

Abstract. Over a rough seabed or on seabed subject to scour, freespans can occur when contact between a subsea pipeline and the seabed is lost over an acceptable distance. When this exceeds the allowable freespan length, design stresses can be exceeded, and a vortex induced vibration (VIV) response can be initiated, resulting in the risk of fatigue failure. If this is not predicted and controlled properly, it will affect pipeline integrity, leading to expensive rectification and intervention work. Freespan analysis consisted primarily of a screening check in which the as-found freespans from Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) or multibeam Side Scan Sonar (SSS) inspection survey were compared against the design allowable lengths and determine the expected fatigue life of a freespan that may be experiencing Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV). Freespans are considered acceptable if the calculated fatigue life exceeds the design life criteria. This paper describes the freespan analysis that has been developed to perform detailed freespan engineering assessments, incorporating the latest survey and as-laid conditions. This analysis follows a methodology in standard code DNVGL RP F105 that has been accepted and used by operators to produce more accurate and less conservative freespan analysis results, leading to a subsea pipeline integrity management strategy with fewer unnecessary interventions and greater cost benefits.

Abstract

The effect of hard chromium coating on AISI D2's mechanical properties and wear resistance has been investigated using the electrolysis technique with varying current and coating duration. The variations of current used are 0.8 A, 1.2 A, and 1.6 A, while the coating duration used are 300, 600 and 900 seconds. Characterization of the films was conducted using SEM-EDS, and XRD. It can be observed from SEM characterization that the chrome grains resulted from the electroplating process are fine. The XRD identify chrome compund on the surface coating. The highest hardness value was 520.6 HV on a sample with a current of 1.6 A and a coating duration of 900 seconds and the lowest wear value was 2.85x10-6 mm3/mm on a sample with a current of 1.6 A and a coating duration of 900 seconds.

Abstract

The Alumunium Titanium Nitrogen (AlTiN) coating is known as one of the best coating materials for protective coating, while Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) is a laser coating process used for electric layer and superconductor applications, producing thin films up to 20 µm in thickness. The combination of these two matters has already been researched and is still in progress. One major challenge in the aluminium casting industry is to minimize the damage caused to tool steel pins made from SKD61, when aluminium material sticks to the pin, and halting production. Therefore, research on effective coatings for tool steels and testing various basic mechanical properties, such as hardness, coating content, roughness, adhesive level, surface image, and microstructure, need to be conducted to address this issue. The research started by creating dummy blocks as samples from SKD61, followed by PVD-PLD with three coating materials, namely Al/Ti (50:50), Al/Ti (40:60), and Al/Ti (30:70). The PLD utilized an Nd:YAG laser with a 1064 nm wavelength, and a vacuum condition with 99.5% High Purity N2 gas, concluding with the annealing process. Several sample tests were conducted to assess the effectiveness of the coatings, including FESEM, SEM, EDS, surface roughness, VDI, and micro-hardness, which were analyzed at the BRIN Physics Research Center and PT XYZ Laboratory. The results indicated that the thin layer deposition improved mechanical properties. The coatings showed an amorphous Al-Ti-N morphology, with surface hardness ranging from 333-384 mHv (without annealing) and 410-455 mHv (with annealing). The roughness increased from 0.198-0.247 Rz (without annealing) to 0.318-0.916 Rz (with annealing). The coatings were ranked in ascending order of hardness as AlTi 40:60, AlTi 50:50, and AlTi 30:70. These findings provide valuable insights for further research, including exploring substrate heat treatment, fixture rotation, and casting effects.

Abstract

The human factors (HF) are recognized as one of critical process safety barriers involved in normal and abnormal conditions in the oil and gas industry. In order to strengthen the HF roles as barriers we need to ensure that the actions generated are based on a valid risk assessment of the operation to be addressed by a relevant human factor analysis. Organizations within the oil and gas process have made much progress in understanding and implementing HF improvement programs. However, organizations are not always clear about what are their current situations in managing HF, their priorities for HF to be improved or where they should focus in their future plans. The objectives of this paper are to develop and propose a model called the human integrity management system (HIMS) model and the way its maturity level (HIMS-ML) is measured in managing HF related to asset integrity (AI) and process safety (PS) implementation. It nowadays becomes something urgent to be implemented but also, importantly, to identify where future efforts and strategy need to be set-up used as basis for improving HF. The proposed HIMS model introduces 5-level scale to determine the level of maturity and includes 20 key elements mainly generated from Bow-Ties model and mapping alignment with the CCPS-risk based inspection process safety (CCPS-RBPS) where 46 expectations are developed to reflect key HF issues within the process safety management system to prevent and mitigate the major accident hazard (MAH) event. This paper describes the model and the method of assessment, illustrating its use with a case study in the 3 big oil and gas operators in Indonesia. Spider chart is used to reflect the results of the maturity assessment obtained based on the response given by the relevant key persons in the organization. It can be concluded that the proposed model appears to be an effective and useful tool to measure the maturity of HF management implementation in AI and PS operation, identify the gaps and propose improvement plans.

Abstract

The oil and gas industry is one of the world's largest and most influential energy contributors. All aspects involved in the operation of this industry are fundamental to be reviewed and managed correctly, especially by preventing or minimizing the failures that could occur. Uniform corrosion is the most common component failure mechanism that can cause failure in the oil and gas industry. The company's actions in managing and preventing the risk of this type of failure have a major role in the sustainability of the company due to the possibility of more significant impacts if the risk cannot be handled well, such as high inspection and handling costs, environmental impacts, and threats to work safety. In this study, the Dynamic Risk-Based Inspection (DRBI) method, which is a development of Risk-Based Inspection (RBI), is implemented to handle and analyze risks that are managed in real-time at each inspection period. Risk level analysis was carried out through data processing related to pipe thickness from the risk profile from the inspection results in 5 months using Igor and Rstudio software and calculating corrosion rates using the forward difference approach. Based on the analysis results, five risk levels of pipeline failure at PT. X due to uniform corrosion using DRBI was obtained, consisting of two medium risks and three medium-high risks. In contrast, only one risk level was obtained from the RBI method, namely medium-high. The risk value fluctuates greatly every month, causing the DRBI method to have a higher level of accuracy and the ability to detect potential risks in more detail than the RBI method.

Abstract

Compactibility of Al/Al2O3 Isotropic Composite with Variation of Holding Time Sintering. The requirement of component with structural ability, light weight and also strength is increasing base on Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) by aluminum as matrix (AMCs). A structural ability is connected to composites compactibility which is depend on quality of interfacial bounding. Powder metallurgy is one of method to produce composite with powder mixing, compacting and sintering. Volume fractions reinforced and sintering time can influence composites compactibility. Volume fractions reinforced variable can produce different reinforcement effect. Beside that, on sintering enables the formation of new phase during sintering time. In this research, Al/Al2O3 isotropic composites are made with aluminum as matrix and alumina (Al2O3) as reinforced. Volume fraction reinforced used 10%. 20%. 30% and 40%. Sintering temperature and compaction pressure are each 600o C and 15 kN. The tests that applied are compression and metallographic test. The result that obtained is optimum compactibility of Al/Al2O3 composite reached at holding time 2 hour. During sintering, new phase can occur that is aluminum oxides (alumina), with unstable properties. The best volume fraction reinforced and holding time sintering are 40% and 2 hours.

Abstract

The Influence of Coating Oxide Metal on Surface of SiC Particles to Elastic Modulus of Al/SiC Composites. The isotropic composites of Al/SiC is made by powder metallurgy method, the quality of mechanical materials depend on interfacial bonding between matrix (Al) and reinforcement (SiC). The quality of interfacial bonding can influence to elastic modulus of composites which is made by solid process. SiC particles were coated by metal oxide aim to enhance quality interfacial bonding between matrix and reinforcement. These research using three kinds of coating materials, which are Mg oxide, Cu oxide and Al oxide, and these materials were deposited on surface of SiC particles. From three kinds of materials coating Al2O3 is the best to enhance quality interfacial bonding between matrix and reinforce than the others as CuO or MgO. There is Intermetalic phase formatted on CuO coating, and MgO coating have many porous where they can make decrease quality of Al-SiC composites. All of volume fraction of SiC on the Al/SiC composites, which oxide aluminum coating on SiC surface have highest value of elastic modulus than the others metal oxides.
