Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of prevention programs implemented by the KUA (Religious Affairs Office), evaluate the forms of collaboration between agencies and the community, and interpret the role of these institutions through the perspective of Maqasid al-Syariah and the sociology of Islamic law. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with the head of the KUA, religious leaders, and religious instructors, and strengthened by field observations and documentation studies. Analysis was conducted using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña through a process of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions linked to the theoretical framework. The results show that the socialization and counseling programs implemented by the KUA are still conventional, focusing on lecture methods, and have not reached vulnerable groups such as adolescents in schools. The implementation of marriage document audits has been underway, but marriage dispensations and the practice of unregistered marriages remain a loophole exploited by the community. Furthermore, cross-sectoral coordination with educational institutions, health institutions, and village governments has not been systematically established, resulting in partial and administrative efforts to prevent child marriage. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of repositioning the role of the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA) as an agent of social change by strengthening its educational and preventive functions, expanding institutional collaboration, and developing a more contextual premarital curriculum. Integrating the values of Maqasid al-Shariah—particularly the protection of life (hifz al-nafs), reason (hifz al-‘aql), and offspring (hifz al-nasl)—with an Islamic legal sociology perspective that emphasizes the dynamics of living law, can serve as a normative and sociological foundation for strengthening the national strategy for preventing child marriage.

Abstract

Abstract

This research investigates Turuk Lagai, a central ritual of the Mentawai people in West Sumatra, Indonesia, as a performative act that enacts and sustains their cosmological worldview. The study's objective is to understand how this ritual reflects belief and constitutes reality through embodied and relational practices. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, the study draws on long-term fieldwork, in-depth interviews, and thematic analysis assisted by QualCoder. Data were coded and interpreted through a theoretical framework combining Victor Turner's ritual process, Catherine Bell's ritualization theory, and Tim Ingold's concept of relational ontology. The analysis identified three overarching themes—Embodiment, Spiritual Correspondence, and Relational Ontology—that demonstrate how bodily movement, chants, offerings, and environmental elements co-produce a cosmological order. Rather than symbolizing cosmology, Turuk Lagai brings it into being, renewing social and spiritual relationships between humans, nature, and ancestral forces. The study concludes that Turuk Lagai is a dynamic system of knowledge production and cosmological maintenance. It recommends greater recognition of indigenous ritual not as static tradition but as an active and vital mode of world-making with implications for cultural preservation and ecological ethics.

Abstract

This study examines how Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) adherents in Minangkabau negotiate and transform their religious traditions within a socio-cultural context in which NU lacks symbolic dominance. NU is widely known for integrating Islamic tradition with local culture, yet this accommodative model does not operate uniformly across regions. In Minangkabau, the supremacy of adat basandi syarak, syarak basandi Kitabullah shapes religious legitimacy and constrains the public expression of NU traditions. This qualitative field study employs an interpretive–critical paradigm, using in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis in West Pasaman Regency. The findings reveal that NU religious practices are selectively enacted and symbolically moderated to preserve social harmony. NU identity is also mobilized instrumentally for social, political, and educational purposes, functioning as flexible symbolic capital. Additionally, pesantren traditions are transmitted to younger generations primarily through ethical values, leadership development, and civic engagement rather than through consistent ritual practice. These dynamics produce what this study conceptualizes as “half-hearted devotion,” a strategic form of adaptive religiosity rather than religious decline. This research contributes to studies of lived Islam and Islam Nusantara by highlighting negotiation and ambivalence as mechanisms of continuity and by recommending a balance between flexibility and efforts to sustain embodied religious traditions.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the book review activity at the Subulus Salam Islamic Boarding School, which focuses on students at the Islamic Senior High School (Madrasah Aliyah) to improve their understanding of the yellow book through interactive discussions. Although beneficial, this activity still faces obstacles such as limited Arabic language skills, differences in student backgrounds, and low active participation, so a more in-depth study of the method's effectiveness is needed. This study aims to describe the role of the book review method in improving students' competence in reading, interpreting, and discussing books; analyze students' motivation in participating in the book review; and identify supporting and inhibiting factors for the activity. Using a descriptive qualitative method through a field research approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and direct interaction with informants to understand the phenomenon holistically. The results show that the book review method helps improve reading, interpreting, and discussing skills more confidently, despite the large number of participants and varying abilities. The level of student activity has been shown to have a significant impact on understanding; the more active they are in reading, asking questions, and discussing, the deeper their understanding. The success of muzakarah is supported by a passion for learning, a religious environment, a regular schedule, communicative facilitators, and adequate facilities. However, obstacles remain, such as fatigue, lack of preparation, differences in language skills, and technical factors. Suggested solutions include small group formation, additional mentoring, task rotation, motivation, and improved facilities and time management so that all students can optimally benefit from muzakarah activities.

Abstract

This study aims to integrate various high-level data analysis techniques in quantitative and qualitative approaches to produce a comprehensive understanding of educational phenomena. A mixed methods approach is used to systematically combine the strengths of numerical and interpretive analysis. In the quantitative stage, data were analyzed using advanced statistical techniques such as regression analysis, multiple regression, principal component analysis (PCA), discriminant analysis, canonical analysis, path analysis, factor analysis, ANAVA, ANCOVA, MANOVA, and MANCOVA to test the significant relationships, differences, and effects between variables. Meanwhile, the qualitative stage uses taxonomy/domain analysis, constant comparative analysis, and symbolic analysis to explore the deeper meaning of field data inductively and contextually. The use of the NVivo application supports the qualitative analysis process through thematic coding, visualization of conceptual relationships, and evidence-based data validation. The integration of these two approaches strengthens the internal and external validity of the research, increases the reliability of the results, and broadens theoretical and practical understanding in the context of modern education. The results of this study indicate that the application of a combination of high-level data analysis methods and qualitative analysis technology support is capable of producing richer, more accurate, and more relevant interpretations for the development of data- and meaning-based educational science.
