Abstract

This research investigates Turuk Lagai, a central ritual of the Mentawai people in West Sumatra, Indonesia, as a performative act that enacts and sustains their cosmological worldview. The study's objective is to understand how this ritual reflects belief and constitutes reality through embodied and relational practices. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, the study draws on long-term fieldwork, in-depth interviews, and thematic analysis assisted by QualCoder. Data were coded and interpreted through a theoretical framework combining Victor Turner's ritual process, Catherine Bell's ritualization theory, and Tim Ingold's concept of relational ontology. The analysis identified three overarching themes—Embodiment, Spiritual Correspondence, and Relational Ontology—that demonstrate how bodily movement, chants, offerings, and environmental elements co-produce a cosmological order. Rather than symbolizing cosmology, Turuk Lagai brings it into being, renewing social and spiritual relationships between humans, nature, and ancestral forces. The study concludes that Turuk Lagai is a dynamic system of knowledge production and cosmological maintenance. It recommends greater recognition of indigenous ritual not as static tradition but as an active and vital mode of world-making with implications for cultural preservation and ecological ethics.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the book review activity at the Subulus Salam Islamic Boarding School, which focuses on students at the Islamic Senior High School (Madrasah Aliyah) to improve their understanding of the yellow book through interactive discussions. Although beneficial, this activity still faces obstacles such as limited Arabic language skills, differences in student backgrounds, and low active participation, so a more in-depth study of the method's effectiveness is needed. This study aims to describe the role of the book review method in improving students' competence in reading, interpreting, and discussing books; analyze students' motivation in participating in the book review; and identify supporting and inhibiting factors for the activity. Using a descriptive qualitative method through a field research approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and direct interaction with informants to understand the phenomenon holistically. The results show that the book review method helps improve reading, interpreting, and discussing skills more confidently, despite the large number of participants and varying abilities. The level of student activity has been shown to have a significant impact on understanding; the more active they are in reading, asking questions, and discussing, the deeper their understanding. The success of muzakarah is supported by a passion for learning, a religious environment, a regular schedule, communicative facilitators, and adequate facilities. However, obstacles remain, such as fatigue, lack of preparation, differences in language skills, and technical factors. Suggested solutions include small group formation, additional mentoring, task rotation, motivation, and improved facilities and time management so that all students can optimally benefit from muzakarah activities.

Abstract

Avocado pits contain a diverse array of bioactive substances, such as procyanidins, phenolic compounds, triterpenoids, acetogenins, fatty amino acids, and mild acids, all exhibiting antioxidant properties. Antioxidants function by preventing oxidation, reducing the formation of harmful compounds, and protecting against aging, inflammation, and cancer. This research centers on assessing the impact of solvent proportions, pinpointing the ideal solvent mixture, and measuring the overall phenolic and flavonoid levels, along with the antioxidant capacity, of the top-performing solvent applied for extracting compounds from avocado seeds. The research method used the SLD (Simplex Lattice Design) Design Expert method. The extract formula was prepared using sonication, with the results showing 17 formulas for three solvents: acetone, distilled water, and 70% ethanol. Test parameters included phytochemical screening tests, specific and non-specific parameter tests, total phenol tests, total flavonoid tests, and antioxidant activity tests using the DPPH method. Statistical data analysis was performed using Design Expert with ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) output according to the designed experimental design. Abstract

Bipolar plates made from polymer–activated carbon composites offer a lightweight, economical alternative but require a balance between mechanical strength and the amount of carbon filler. This is because a filler fraction that is too high can cause agglomeration and void formation, ultimately reducing the tensile strength and overall performance of the plate. This study aims to evaluate the tensile strength of PET (Polyethene Terephthalate) composites with varying levels of activated carbon. The compositions tested were 90/10, 80/20, and 70/30 (wt%). Specimens were fabricated using a hot press (compression moulding). Tensile testing was conducted in accordance with ASTM D638. The tensile strength value was calculated from the maximum load to the cross-sectional area of the specimen. The test results showed that the composite with 10% activated carbon produced 2.84 MPa. The addition of activated carbon up to 30% decreased the tensile strength to 1.05 MPa. This trend indicates that increasing the activated carbon composition decreases the tensile strength of PET composites for bipolar plate applications.

Abstract

Education plays a crucial role in shaping individuals’ character and intellectual development, particularly within the context of Islamic education in Indonesia. Madrasahs, as Islamic educational institutions, have a long historical background and function as a bridge between religious instruction and general education. This study aims to examine the historical development of madrasahs, the educational patterns implemented within them, and their influence on the national education system in Indonesia. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing both primary and secondary data collected through relevant literature reviews, including books, scholarly articles, and academic journals. The findings indicate that madrasahs are not solely focused on teaching Islamic religious sciences but also integrate general knowledge into their curricula to respond to societal and educational demands. Furthermore, prominent figures such as KH. Hasyim Asy’ari and KH. Ahmad Dahlan played significant roles in reforming and developing madrasah education to remain relevant to the challenges of their time. The implications of this study highlight the importance of strengthening the madrasah education system as a means of building national character and contributing to the development of formal education in Indonesia. By enhancing the quality and structure of madrasahs, it is expected that future generations will emerge with strong academic competencies and good moral values, enabling them to face global challenges while maintaining Islamic principles.

Abstract

This Community Service activity was carried out at the Roti Pakcik Tanjung Morawa MSME through work process observations, discussions with the owner and workers, and recording the condition of the production facility. The activity focused on two fundamental needs of the MSME: improving the layout of the work area to enhance production efficiency and identifying the need for relevant production technology. The observation results showed a crowded work area, unclear functional zoning, and the movement of materials and products across the same area. These conditions increased waiting times, increased the risk of cross-contamination, and complicated quality control. In addition, the production process still relied on manual practices and limited tools, so there was a need for technology in the form of a flour sifting machine to maintain ingredient consistency, a mixer to maintain dough homogeneity according to production capacity, and a bread cutting machine to speed up the process, improve size uniformity, and reduce work fatigue. The activity resulted in a workflow problem map, an initial zoning design, and a list of technology priorities as a basis for further mentoring. These findings position the program as the initial stage of a realistic and field-based MSME production transformation.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the educational thought of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, a prominent figure in Islamic history known as a hadith scholar and founder of the Hanbali school of thought. Although better known in the fields of hadith and fiqh, the educational aspect of his thought is often overlooked. This study uses a qualitative approach by analyzing literature related to the educational values of monotheism taught by Imam Ahmad. The analysis shows that monotheism education, according to Imam Ahmad, is a process of instilling belief in the oneness of Allah SWT, which must begin at an early age. The three main values of Imam Ahmad's monotheism education encompass a Muslim's behavior in relation to Allah, oneself, and fellow human beings. This emphasis on monotheism education reflects Imam Ahmad's commitment to the pure teachings of Islam and the importance of educating the younger generation on a strong foundation of faith. Keywords: Educational Thought, Monotheism, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal.
