Abstract

Language and how to pronounce it are inseparable in the context of learning a new language. There are undoubtedly faults in the process of pronouncing a word in any language, particularly non-native languages. While many people confuse error with a mistake, error often refers to the difference between the actual or expected value and the resultant or observed value. Errors may be measured, examined, and used to determine the degree of correctness or inaccuracy in a variety of domains. Mistakes, on the other hand, are more typically seen in general or daily conditions. Mistakes are often defined as improper or wrong behaviors or decisions, whether in decision-making, physical activities, or communication. Incomprehension, carelessness, or actions that are contrary to what should have been done are all examples of mistakes. This study, which focused on the pronunciation errors produced by English language education majors at the college of education, employed a qualitative descriptive approach to gather information from 20 students and ask them to read a short tale. This study identified three types of error: Substitution, additional, and omission. Following additional with 3.78% and omission with 0.34% as the least frequent error types made by students, it was discovered after gathering all the data that substitution accounted for 100% of all errors.

Abstract

This study explores the significance of English phonology in enhancing language skills during the golden age of childhood. Phonological awareness, encompassing sound discrimination and manipulation, plays a crucial role in vocabulary acquisition, reading proficiency, and overall linguistic development. Early intervention through phonological activities in educational settings, supported by parental involvement and technological integration, fosters a strong foundation for language acquisition. Continuous professional development for educators ensures the implementation of evidence-based practices in phonological instruction. Investing in phonological awareness during childhood is essential for promoting academic success, cognitive development, and lifelong literacy.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find phonological errors that students make when they pronounce vowel diphthongs. Researchers also asked what type of vocal diphthong sound students most often said in tenth grade. Grade X students of the 2021/2022 school year are the subjects of this study. This study used a quantitative descriptive approach. Researchers randomly selected 60 samples from 395 individuals. The tool used is the English Vowel Diphthong word pronunciation test, which includes eight types of English vowel diphthongs with two focus words for each type. Furthermore, a voice recorder is employed to capture the students' pronunciation. Findings showed that students made 339 word mistakes. The pronunciation of X graders shows the most frequent types of vowel diphthong errors: Diphhongs [ɔʊ] with the focus word "although" experience 72% of total errors, Diphhongs [ʊə] with the focus word "during" experience 65% of total errors, and Diphhongs [aɪ] with the focus word "sacrifice" experience 61% of total errors.

Abstract

This research presents an in-depth analysis of various types of English syllables, including closed, open, vowel-consonant-e, vowel team, r-controlled, and consonant-le syllables. Each type of syllable has unique characteristics that contribute to the structure and pronunciation of words in English. Closed syllables produce short vowel sounds due to the ending consonant, while open syllables result in long vowel sounds due to the ending vowel. Vowel-consonant-e syllables involve a vowel followed by a consonant and a silent 'e,' which lengthens the vowel sound. Vowel team syllables consist of two vowels that together produce a single vowel sound, while r-controlled syllables involve a vowel followed by the letter 'r,' which alters the vowel sound. Consonant-le syllables, typically found at the end of words, provide a distinctive rhythm and flow. This study demonstrates that a theoretical understanding of syllable types has significant implications for phonics instruction and language education. Phonics instruction based on syllable patterns can enhance reading fluency and spelling proficiency. The analysis also reveals phonological diversity in English, reflecting the language's adaptability and complexity. Understanding syllable structures also provides insights into how the brain processes language, which is crucial for developing effective language teaching strategies.
