Abstract

Islamic insurance, known as Sharia Insurance, has emerged as a vital aspect of Indonesia's financial landscape. Sharia Insurance adheres to Islamic economic principles, offering products such as takaful (mutual guarantee) and mudharabah (profit-sharing). The potential for growth in Indonesia's Sharia insurance sector is substantial, bolstered by the country's predominantly Muslim population, which constituted 87.2% of the total population in 2021. Moreover, under Financial Services Authority Regulation (FSAR) Number 11 of 2023, Article 15, Sharia financial institutions are mandated to prioritize Sharia-compliant financial products. Despite these regulatory supports, however, Sharia insurance has achieved only a modest market share, with premiums accounting for just 4.76% as of December 31, 2022. In response to these challenges and opportunities, this study aims to examine the barriers, particularly the issue of public awareness, where many individuals lack a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of the advantages offered by Sharia insurance products. Consequently, this paper addresses two main objectives: 1) identifying factors contributing to public misconceptions and limited awareness of Sharia insurance benefits, and 2) exploring initiatives aimed at addressing these issues. This research employs a qualitative approach, employing systematic literature review techniques to analyze relevant books and literature focused on the identified themes. The findings aim to offer insights into the challenges faced by Sharia insurance and propose strategies to enhance public awareness and understanding of Islamic insurance products.

Abstract

Globally, cancer remains one of the leading causes of death, and the number of cases continues to increase along with world population growth, population aging and modern lifestyles. The prevalence of cancer in 2024 will still be influenced by many factors, including lifestyle, diet, environmental exposure, and advances in cancer detection and treatment. Currently, a lot of research related to alternative cancer therapy focuses on the use of natural product as anticancer agents that are more selective, effective, and with lower side effects. This article review aims to provide information regarding the patchouli plant (Pogostemon cablin) and its potential as an anticancer agent. This review was carried out by collecting literature from various databases published in the last 10 years (2014 – 2024). Based on literature searches, P. cablin is known to have anticancer activity against endometrial, ovarian, liver, skin, nasopharyngeal, prostate, blood, colorectal and lung cancer.

Abstract

Marine macroalgae represent a promising but underexplored resource for anticancer drug discovery due to their diverse repertoire of bioactive secondary metabolites. Gracilaria salicornia, a red alga found abundantly in the waters surrounding the Hari Islands, Southeast Sulawesi, has not been previously studied for its cytotoxic potential. This study aimed to evaluate the phytochemical composition and anticancer activity of methanol extract from G. salicornia against MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. The algae were extracted using a gradient solvent system, with methanol selected for further testing due to its polarity and broad extraction capacity. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, phenolics, and steroids/terpenoids—classes of compounds known for their cytotoxic, pro-apoptotic, and redox-modulatory properties. General toxicity was assessed using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT), with the extract demonstrating moderate toxicity (LC₅₀ = 561.26 mg/L), indicating the presence of bioactive constituents. Cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cells was evaluated using the MTT assay, yielding an IC₅₀ value of 414.6 mg/L. Although lower than the standard chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (IC₅₀ = 4.1 mg/L), the observed activity supports the hypothesis that G. salicornia contains compounds with therapeutic relevance. These findings suggest that G. salicornia harbors cytotoxic agents that act through diverse mechanisms, likely involving oxidative stress and hormonal regulation. While the crude extract exhibited only moderate activity, its phytochemical richness warrants further fractionation, isolation, and mechanism-of-action studies. This study provides foundational evidence for the potential of Indonesian marine algae in cancer drug discovery and highlights the need for continued exploration of native marine biodiversity as a source of novel chemotherapeutic agents.

Abstract

Etlingera elatior (Wualae), a plant recognized for its flavonoid-derived antioxidant properties, presents a potential source for cosmeceutical applications. This study investigated the formulation and evaluation of a Self-Foaming Clay Soap (SFCS) incorporating an ethanol extract of E. elatior fruit. The SFCS base, comprising surfactant as a cleansing and foaming agent combined with bentonite clay for enhanced serviceability and oil adsorption, was formulated with varying concentrations of bentonite (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% w/w), designated as FI to FV, respectively, alongside other necessary excipients. The resulting SFCS preparations underwent rigorous physical and chemical stability assessments following accelerated storage conditions (freeze-thaw cycles). Evaluated parameters included organoleptic properties, foam stability and height, viscosity, dispersibility, homogeneity, and pH. The evaluation revealed that Formulation II (FII), containing 5% w/w bentonite, exhibited the most favorable stability profile and met the established criteria for SFCS semisolid preparations. Specifically, FII demonstrated a foam stabilization rate of 84.61% and a foam height of 2.6 cm after freeze-thaw cycling, a viscosity of 10,000 cPs, a spreadability diameter of 4.1 cm, a homogeneous texture devoid of coarse particles, and a skin-compatible pH of 5. These findings suggest that an SFCS formulation incorporating a 5% w/w concentration of bentonite and E. elatior fruit extract holds promising potential as a stable and efficacious skincare preparation.

Abstract

Marine sponges are an abundant yet underutilized resource in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, despite their ecological roles and pharmacological potential. Steroidal metabolites are dominant in many sponge species and have been widely recognized for their strong anti-inflammatory activity. However, the chemical composition and biological potential of Carteriospongia sp from Indonesian waters remain unexplored. Carteriospongia sp was extracted using the Soxhlet method, and the chemical profile was analyzed by Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrophotometry (GC-MS). Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated in vitro using the Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) protein denaturation assay, with methylprednisolone as the positive control. Molecular docking studies were performed to assess the interactions between steroidal compounds and BSA protein. GC-MS analysis identified eight steroidal compounds such as 2-methylenecholestan-3-ol (S1), stigmasterol (S2), 4,4-dimethyl-cholesta-8,24-dien-3-ol (S3), 8,14-seco-3,19-epoxyandrostane-8,14-dione, 17-acetoxy-3ß-methoxy-4,4-dimethyl (S4), cholic acid ethyl ester (S5),  (3ß,5Z,7E)-9,10-secocholesta-5,7,10(19)-triene-3,24,25-triol (S6), stigmastan-3-en-6-ol (S7), ß-sitosterol (S8). The extract demonstrated concentration-dependent inhibition of protein denaturation, achieving 84.81% inhibition at 128 mg.L-1. The IC50 value was 3.71 mg.L-1, comparable to methylprednisolone (IC50 4.45 mg.L-1). Molecular docking revealed that compound S1 and S4 exhibited lower binding energies than other steroids, suggesting stronger stabilization of BSA protein. The findings demonstrate that Carteriospongia sp extract possesses significant anti-inflammatory potential, comparable to methylprednisolone. This study provides novel insights into the bioactive potential of Indonesian marine sponges and emphasizes the importance of further pharmacological and molecular studies to develop sponge-derived steroidal compounds as alternative or complementary anti-inflammatory therapeutics.
