Abstract

Fungi, including Rhizopus sp., are food sources that commonly contain high nucleic acid levels. Therefore, the nucleic acid content must be reduced to achieve health standard requirements. This study aimed to isolate, identify, and produce Rhizopus sp. mycelium containing low nucleic acid. The Rhizopus spp. were isolated from tempeh collected from 12 different areas in Indonesia. Fungal identification was conducted based on morphological characteristics. The fungal isolates were selected based on mycelial growth and spore production on PDA. Biomass production of mycelium was carried out in potato extract and soybean extract media obtained from 200 g/L and 333.3 g/L, respectively. In each medium, 6 sugar levels were added, namely 0, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 g/L. Mycelium nucleic acid content reduction was achieved by heat treatment at 50°C and 60°C for 15 minutes and measured by a spectrophotometer at 260 nm. Fifty-eight isolates that were identified into 3 species were obtained in this experiment: R. oryzae, R. stolonifera, and R. microsporus. R. Microsporus had higher mycelium biomass and lower spore number than the other species. R. Microsporus produced a higher mycelium biomass in the soybean extract medium with 5 g/L additional sugar. The nucleic acid content of the 50°C heat-treated mycelium was 1.82% and 1.73% at 65°C. These values fulfilled the standard of mycelial nucleic acid content permitted in food by the USDA. Keywords: morphology, Rhizopus microspores, spore, soybean extract, tempeh

Abstract

The portrayal of body shaming against women in films is a social critique of the act of body shaming. Hence, the study of body shaming in films is intriguing for future investigation. The objective of this research is to uncover the portrayal of body shaming towards women in films. The research data comprised of words and phrases that encompassed body shaming and were examined utilizing Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis approach. The data was acquired from the movie Imperfect: Karir, Cinta & Timbangan. This study is also classified as critical-qualitative research. The research findings indicate that the film “Imperfect: Karir, Cinta & Timbangan” portrays three types of body shaming, which include comparing, commenting, and insulating individuals based on their physical appearance. Furthermore, the film's production background is influenced by the film development genre in Indonesia, and the producer's background as a comedian aligns with the genre of the film. In addition, this also highlights that the film production is also considered to have some motives to depict body shaming in the film, including the commercial motive, social culture, and ideology to struggle.

Abstract

Coursebooks as one of the learning sources are important to meet the students’ needs, especially those that match with the current curriculum. The current curriculum in Indonesia is Merdeka Curriculum. Therefore, the value of Genre Based Approach (GBA) in the Merdeka curriculum in a 7th grade Junior High School English coursebook is examined. An adopted checklist consists of 25 items focused on the subjects and contents, skill and sub-skills, and practical consideration is used as the evaluation matrix. The result answers three research questions. First, the coursebook shows a variety of activities. The most frequent reading activity is “read and answer questions”. Followed by “read and fill the blanks'' which becomes almost the two fifth part from the whole reading activities. Next, “read descriptive text”, “read sentences'', and “read comic strips'' also appear in the coursebook for less than 10%. The other reading activities are “read procedure text”, “read and draw map”, and “read a descriptive text and answer a true or false statement” (5.8% for each). Then, the last are “read and underline”, “read and give checklist”, and “read and ask someone’s identity” with the smallest portion in the coursebook. Second, the genres that appear in the coursebook are descriptive, procedure, and persuasive text. Last, the result of whether the coursebooks are implementing Genre-based Approach in Merdeka curriculum standards or not, and the result from the first and second research questions show that the coursebook that has been analyzed is implementing Genre-based Approach in Merdeka curriculum standards.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine and describe the influence of psycholinguistics and metacognition on the ability of physics education students to use verbal language in the learning process. Quantitative research is used to measure the level of influence between variables, and then the case study is used to determine the sample. Based on the data, it could be concluded that the ability of psycholinguistics had a positive correlation with language skills, with a correlation of 0.924 and a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.000 <0.05. Thus, it could be understood that there was a positive correlation between psycholinguistics toward language skills with a very strong correlation category. The correlation between metacognition and language skills was 0.874 with a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05. Therefore, this article argues that the ability of psycholinguistics and metacognition, so the language skills of physics students in carrying out physics learning would be better. This meant that the two variables affected the verbal language skills in learning physics together and not separately. Because language skills are related to metacognitive abilities, including intellectual abilities, teachers need to consider the use of verbal language in the classroom for the cognitive development of students. To achieve this, a psycholinguistic skill development program was needed for physics education students and other prospective teacher students; they could use verbal language in both the declarative, imperative, and interrogative aspects appropriately and accurately.

Abstract

The Montessori method has become a trend in Early Childhood Education, particularly in terms of the students’ language acquisition within the Self-Directed Learning (SDL) framework. While SDL, as proposed in heutagogy, is theoretically ideal for language learning, practical implementations in a faith-based culture are not well understood. Therefore, this research analyses the teaching of the English language in a new educational context: a Montessori classroom in Indonesia that incorporates Islamic principles. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, this research identifies the synergistic conditions that foster language development and describes the observable pathways of language acquisition within this context. Evidence gathered from classroom observations and teacher interviews identified three pillars that underpin success in this particular classroom environment: (1) radical autonomy, which offers personally meaningful language input; (2) a low anxiety classroom, which encourages spontaneous language production; and (3) a synergistic Islamic classroom environment, which strengthens self-discipline and independence in contrast to the Islamic faith. A specific four-stage sequence of acquisition was identified within this meticulously designed environment. The integration of Islamic character-building with Montessori pedagogy underscores the holistic development of the child and the language itself. This research adds value by addressing pedagogical needs at the cultural level, and, in doing so, establishes a conceptual framework that outlines the stepwise progression of learners within a framework of self-determination.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aimed to develop and assess the effectiveness of Smart Apps Creator (SAC)-based interactive learning media to enhance critical thinking skills among fifth-grade students in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) learning.Methodology – Employing the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation), the study employed a quasi-experimental design with purposive sampling for the needs analysis (20 teachers, 24 students) and random sampling for the trials (54 experimental and 57 control group students across four elementary schools). The experimental group engaged in six offline SAC-based learning sessions, while the control group used conventional methods (lectures, worksheets, static images). Data were collected through classroom observations, media feasibility questionnaires, and pre- and post-tests of critical thinking skills, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, and N-Gain scores.Findings – The SAC-based media achieved high feasibility (expert validation: 82.3%-86.5%). They significantly improved critical thinking, with the experimental group recording an N-Gain of 0.75 (high) and a t-value of -30.556 (p = 0.000), outperforming the control group’s N-Gain of 0.42 (moderate) and a t-value of -18.070 (p = 0.000). Interactive elements, such as quizzes and animations, fostered student-centered learning, although challenges included limited hardware and teacher training needs. The offline SAC media effectively addressed connectivity constraints, enhancing analytical skills.Contribution – This study offers a scalable, offline educational technology solution for rural areas, promoting 21st-century skills such as critical thinking and suggesting the broader implementation and exploration of additional skills, including collaboration and communication.
