Abstract

Content-based Instruction (CBI) uses authentic materials and language as a medium for teaching English. It aligns with the ESP concept in vocational education and might affect students’ perception and motivation. This study assessed vocational high school students’ perception and motivation toward CBI implementation in teaching English. The case study involved 35 students of the 10.2 Culinary Arts Major class, SMK Negeri 2 Godean, Sleman Yogyakarta. The study was started from March to June 2024. The samples were determined through the purpose sampling technique, which involved all the participants as samples. Then, the instruments being used were validated questionnaires (a Pearson correlation value of 0.445 to 0.877 and a Cronbach alpha value of 0.997) supported by open-ended questions and classroom observation. The results showed that vocational high school students have a moderate level of perception (3.31) and motivation (3.44) on CBI implementation based on the Likert Scales’ interpretation. However, the students have a high perception of the authentic materials being used and instrumental motivation about the importance of English in their lives. This leads them to have a willingness to learn English. It is supported by their positive responses to open-ended questions and nuances in classroom observation. Meanwhile, it is vital to maintain internal motivation and be assertive in implementing CBI by applying clear learning objectives and contracts to make a conducive classroom. Finally, due to participants’ limitations, conducting future studies with broader participants, including teachers and students from other majors, is crucial.

Abstract

A curriculum comprises objectives, materials, and content that are required to be studied in an academic institution in order to accomplish educational aims. As of now, the Merdeka Curriculum stands as the most recent educational framework with the potential to enhance the standard of instruction for children across the nation in Indonesia. However, optimal implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum has not yet occurred, particularly in early childhood education. The objective of this community service endeavor is to furnish early childhood teachers in Gunungpring, Magelang, with Merdeka Curriculum Training and its Practical Implementation. This activity was implemented through observation, implementation which consisted of training and mentorship, and evaluation. There were around 20 teachers from 10 schools who participated in this activity. It was done in the village hall of Gunungpring. The result of this activity was that the teachers’ skills and knowledge were enhanced in the Merdeka Curriculum for early childhood education. They claimed that the training and mentoring was successfully done to help them in increasing their knowledge of how the Merdeka Curriculum should be implemented. In addition, the teacher successfully developed Merdeka Curriculum-based Teaching Modules as the utilization of the results. They could manage to create modules which still focused on children playing and learning based on Merdeka Curriculum. The next step is to work with the local Education Department to offer additional training, particularly focusing on early childhood level. Additionally, the team intends to offer training in multimodal literacy. In the future, teachers will have additional references to improve their learning preparation.

Abstract

Enhancing Students' Speaking Abilities through Paired Storytelling Strategies. This study examined how using storytelling as a teaching strategy affected students' ability to communicate more clearly. The participants included thirty students from SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Yogyakarta, chosen through purposive sampling and split into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received storytelling instruction over four consecutive sessions, while the control group did not. Both groups were assessed on their speaking skills before and after the intervention. Results showed that the experimental group's post-test mean score was 96.0, compared to a pre-test mean score of 72.0. Specifically, the control group's mean post-test score was 64.0, an increase from the pre-test score of 60.0. The oral proficiency scores from each indicator demonstrated that students in the experimental group improved after being taught using paired storytelling, while the control group's scores did not improve. A one-group t-test demonstrated that post-test scores were significantly higher than pre-test scores for both groups, with t-values of -34.708 for the control group and -6.433 for the experimental group, both significant at the 0.000 level, well below the 0.05 threshold. These findings suggest that implementing storytelling in EFL classes can effectively improve students' speaking skills. Keywords: speaking skill, storytelling, improvement.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i2.202473

Abstract

The need to take English as a foreign language proficiency test (known as TOEFL [Test of English Language Proficiency]) has been gaining popularity in Indonesia. The increasing demands for such a test and its expensive cost have reinforced many institutions to develop TOEFL instruments and administer the test internally. However, constructing a test instrument is a complex process that makes conducting item analysis become more challenging. Meanwhile, item analysis is crucial to assess the items' quality. Therefore, this study reported the results of statistically analyzing 20 questions of TOEFL reading comprehension that were analyzed in terms of the test reliability, the item and person fit, and the items' difficulty level. Thirty-eight members of the English Department Students' Association of a state university in West Java participated in this study by taking the reading test. The data were analyzed using the Rasch model by utilizing the Quest program. The results showed that four items (36.8%) did not fulfill the ideal criteria of a valid test because they were too easy and too difficult to be given to the target test takers; thus, they needed to be discarded. Meanwhile, 16 items (63.2%) are of good quality and can be used immediately in the proficiency test, especially to measure reading comprehension skills, because they have fulfilled the standard requirements for a valid test. The findings have provided insight into the importance of item analysis in validating test instruments to improve the test quality for future administrations.
