Abstract

As indicated by some researcher, cognitive conflicts arise from a collaborative learning when students ask their friends to redesign (co-construct) knowledge. Conceptually, cognitive changes that occured in a process of conflict or cooperation is a mistake. This argument claimed that a productive cognitive conflict occurs under a co-operative context, and not individual way. On the other hand, cognitive conflict rarely occurs in a collaborative or developing consensus process, but it occurs at a personal conflict (interpersonal) process. This study examines the implementation of cognitive conflict strategies in the learning of mathematics through individual and group learning in junior high school students. Through the design of Pre and Post Test Control Group Design, the result obtained that the quality of critical thinking skills, either through cooperative and individual learning were in the medium category. While improving students' ability to think creatively through learning cognitive conflict, either cooperatively or individually were in the low category. The test results showed that despite the increase in the ability to think in both groups are on the same level, there was a statistically significant difference. This also applied in the ability to think creatively, even if both were at low levels, but statistically it showed significant difference. The cognitive conflict approach through cooperative setting is recommended for use by teachers in teaching mathematics in schools.

Abstract

This article examines some of the previous research on learning ordinary differential equations to detect problems that often arise in ordinary differential equations courses and looks at the methods used to solve problems that occur, and examines several articles on APOS theory, which are theories that study how students build mathematical concepts. The method used in this research is literature study of research articles. The articles studied as study sources were randomly selected with the provisions of the topic of learning differential equations and APOS theory. The selected articles were analyzed descriptively. The results of the study show that the problem that often arises in learning differential equations is conceptual errors so that the models chosen in general are learning models that emphasize concept reinforcement. One of the learning models that support embedding mathematical concepts is a learning model based on the APOS theory.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the flow of thought of the pre-service mathematics teachers through the answers of a function limit evaluation by formal definition. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive method. The research subjects were the students of mathematics education department of Universitas Serang Raya, Indonesia. After analyzing the students’ written answers, we interviewed the subjects to get further explanation on their strategies and common mistakes. This study found that based on the students’ results in the function limit evaluation by formal definition, there were common strategies, i.e. (1) preparing the proof and (2) proving. The stage of preparing the proof consisted of (1) determining delta value by the final statement of formal definition, (2) substituting the given f(x) and L process, (3) simplifying value in the absolute sign, (4) solving the inequality, and (5) finding the delta value. The stage of proving consisted of (1) stating positive epsilon, (2) defining delta, (3) stating positive delta, (4) substituting the constants and delta values in the initial statement of formal definition, and (5) solving the inequality to create the final inequality statement of the formal definition.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a mathematics test with the COVID-19 context to measure the student's skill competencies in grade VIII SMP/MTs. This study was a research development by following the test development procedures: compiling blueprints, writing items, reviewing questions, testing, analyzing the results of trials, and revising. The developed test consists of multiple-choice items with four options. These items were validated content by three experts (teacher, lecturer, and mathematics trainer) and were tested to 86 students. This study developed a mathematics test set with the COVID-19 context consisting of ten items that experts declared valid. Trial of ten items showed two items (numbers 7 and 6), which were not good. Item number 7 was too easy, while item number 6 was not good in the discrimination index. Besides, the two distractors in item number 7 did not work correctly. The estimated coefficient of reliability of the measurement results was quite high, indicated by a coefficient value of 0.658. The items that were not good have been revised by modifying the items so that the index of difficulty and discrimination look good. Useful and revised items were assembled into a mathematics test set for grade VIII students.
