Abstract

High School students often experience high academic stress, even they are expected to achieve high academic achievement. In this case optimism holds an important role because students who have high optimism are believed to manage academic stress. Due to this background, the present study attempted to analyze the effectiveness of solution-focused brief group counseling to increase the optimism of Public Senior High School or SMA Negeri 5 Semarang students. It used pretest-posttest control group design and Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R) scale to collect the data which later were analyzed using mixed ANOVA. Findings indicated that the solution-focused brief counseling has been effective to increase the optimism of students with academic stress. Thus, counselors are required to master this type of counseling to foster students’ optimism and reduce academic stress.

Abstract

Self-disclosure as a process of presenting oneself is realized in the activities of sharing feeling, thoughts, and information with others. It is important for adolescents to develop an effective relationship, problem solving skills, obtain the meaning of a relationship, and have mental healthiness. Thus, the present study strived for identifying the effects of narrative approach group counseling and reality approach group counseling interventions to increase students’ self-disclosure. Here, 12 students were divided into two experimental groups. The groups were investigated using a comparison group pretest and multiple posttest design. Meanwhile, their data were collected using self-disclosure scale with 60 statement items. Based on mixed ANOVA test, both group counseling services have been effective to increase students’ self-disclosure. Further, the findings, implications, and limitations of this study are discussed in the discussion section.

Abstract

Resilience is an important sub-factor necessary for students to improve their learning achievement. Up to now, students as bullying survivors experience decrease in their academic resilience. Thus, the present study attempted to determine the effectiveness of group counseling with SFBC and Narrative Therapy approaches to improve the academic resilience of the students in SMK Negeri Batealit in Jepara Regency. It used an experimental method with a randomized pretest-posttest comparison group design and purposive sampling to obtain 16 students as subjects of the study with low academic resilience. The student’s data were collected using Academic Resilience Scale (ARS) designed independently by the researchers with the validity coefficient of (0.249-0.780) and an alpha reliability of 0.884. Findings indicated that the intervention of group counseling with SFBC and Narrative Therapy approaches has been effective to improve the academic resilience of bullying survivors in SMK Negeri 1 Batealit in Jepara Regency. The interesting thing from the results of this study is that self-efficacy is the most influential aspect in shaping students' academic resilience.

Abstract

Self-efficacy and learning motivation are important for students because those affect the learning process, cognitive actions and increase effort through the student's ability to achieve academic goals. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the psychoeducational group of goal-setting training to improve self-efficacy and learning motivation of students at Mekar Arum Junior Hight Shool, Bandung Regency. This study used an experimental method with a randomized pretest-posttest control group design by involving 14 students with low to moderate self-efficacy and learning motivation levels as study subjects. The results of this study showed that the psychoeducational group of goal-setting training was effective in improving students' self-confidence in doing assignments, enthusiasm for learning and academic achievements at school. The results of the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann-Whitney Test showed that the intervention of the goal-setting training psychoeducational group was effective in improving the self-efficacy and learning motivation of students at Mekar Arum Junior High School, Bandung Regency. The results and findings of the study, including implications and limitations are further discussed in the discussion section.

Abstract

Career planning is an important medium to achieve success in the world of work because it leads people to the careers they are living. Thus, this study attempted to analyze the effect of family and peers’ environments on students’ career planning. It used a quantitative method by using correlation and regression techniques. Of 5,967 students, 374 were taken using cluster random sampling. Their data were collected using the scales of family environment, peers and career planning. Findings showed that there found the effects of a family environment on career planning (β=0.690 t=8.522 p<0.01), peers on career planning (β=0.217 t=2.623 p<0.01) and the family environment and peers simultaneously on students' career planning (R=0.558 R2= F=83,711 p<0.01). This study has clarified the role of the family environment and peers on students' career planning.

Abstract

Forgiveness is a positive attitude that helps transgender people to live their lives as a minority in a common society. Thus, this study was focused on determining the meaning of transgender people forgiveness and its implication for guidance and counseling. The study used a qualitative approach with a phenomenology design and obtained data from komunitas pewaris (transgender people community in Semarang City) represented by three people. Once the data were collected, interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was carried out. Findings indicated that the forgiveness in transgender people was caused by a series of events, such as regret, self-mediation, and emotional control. Moreover, individuals’ perception was found significant in transgender people forgiveness.

Abstract

Many social media users experience low Body Image Satisfaction (BIS) that results in anxiety, decrease in self-confidence, decrease in self-esteem, depression, and the drive to be thin. This study attempted to examine the effectiveness of CBT counseling with a self-talk technique to improve the BIS of students with social media addiction tendencies. It used a one group pretest-posttest design and involved 6 students whose data were collected using the instruments of body image satisfaction and social media addiction. Findings showed that the CBT group counseling with a self-talk technique has been effective to improve the BIS of students with social media addiction tendencies. Thus, counselors are recommended to implement the intervention of CBT group counseling with a self-talk technique to improve BIS, especially in senior high school students. Further studies are suggested to use a qualitative design to discover the impact of low BIS.

Abstract

Academic procrastination has negative impact on the decline in students’ academic achievement. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of behavioral group counseling with self-management and token economy techniques to reduce the academic procrastination of students at SMA Negeri 12 Semarang. It was an experimental study which used randomized pretest-posttest comparison group design and involved 14 grade eleven students chosen purposively of 429 people. The subjects were then grouped into two, namely one group received a self-management technique, and another one received a token economy technique for 4 sessions for each. Findings showed that both techniques were effective to reduce the academic procrastination of the students at SMA Negeri 12 Semarang, while each technique contributed equal impact. The interesting thing from the results of this study was that attention disorder became the most influential aspect in shaping academic procrastination in students.

Abstract

Assertive behavior in social live affects the way individuals adapt to their new environment, society, and understand their own rights and others. The inability to do adaptation leads individuals to be passive and aggressive. Thus, the present study attempted to examine the effectiveness of group counseling with the coping strategy of problem focused coping and emotional focused coping to increase the assertiveness of SMK Astrindo students in Tegal City. It used an experimental study with randomized pretest-posttest comparison group design by involving 21 students as the subjects of the study whose data were collected using The Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (RAS) scale. Further, the collected data were analyzed using one way ANOVA. It resulted that all three experimental groups which used problem focused coping, emotional focused coping, and the combination of both achieved effectiveness in the assertiveness increase. Among three, the group with emotional focused coping appeared to get the most satisfying result indicated by the highest difference between pretest and posttest.

Abstract

Academic hardiness as an ability to gain good achievement in learning, have commitment, and control over what they obtain is truly needed by students to face academic challenges. This study strived for examining the effectiveness of group counseling with a motivational interviewing approach to improve the academic hardiness of Senior High School (SMA) students. It used a motivational technique treatment for five sessions and analyzed students’ pretest and posttest data using a Wilcoxon test. In terms of subject, this study invited eight students of SMAN 9 Semarang, consisting of four males and four females sampled from 290 students. Findings revealed that this technique was effective to improve the academic hardiness of SMA students. Thus, counselors are recommended to implement the group counseling with a motivational interviewing approach to improve the academic hardiness of SMA students.
