Abstract

This research aims to determine the relationship between learning resources and students' English learning achievement. This research uses a quantitative approach and correlational methods. The sample in this study was 30 students of class VIII i of SMP Negeri 13 Makassar, and the sample was selected using random sampling technique. Data was obtained from questionnaire answers of 30 respondents and tests of 30 respondents and then correlated. The results of the research concluded that the correlation between learning resources and students' English learning achievement obtained rxy results amounting to 0.376, (between 0.210 - 0.400) where the two variables have a low degree of correlation and a positive form of correlation. It can be concluded that the hypothesis which states that there is a relationship between learning resources and students' English learning achievement is accepted. So, whatever learning resources the teacher uses should be in accordance with the learning objectives so that they can support the student learning process and obtain optimal results.Keywords: Learning Resources, Learning Achievement

Abstract

The objective of this research was to evaluate whether the Word Wall application effectively improves students' English vocabulary mastery. Typically, teaching aids and applications aim to make learning more engaging and motivating. This study used a pre-experimental design with pre-test and post-test measurements to assess the impact of the Word Wall application. Conducted at SMK Handayani Makassar with 96 tenth-grade students, the research focused on a sample of 23 students from Class X TBSM-TKR, selected through cluster random sampling. The data, analyzed using a paired samples t-test, showed an increase in mean scores from 68.52 in the pre-test to 90.00 in the post-test. With a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.00, which is less than 0.05, the results indicate that the Word Wall application was effective in enhancing students' vocabulary mastery.Student perceptions of the Word Wall application were positive, reflecting its effectiveness in improving English vocabulary mastery. According to the previous chapter, students' mean score was 51.04 with a standard deviation of 2.40, suggesting that the application increased student motivation by making the learning process more engaging, reducing boredom, and fostering greater interest and enthusiasm for vocabulary learning.Keywords: Word Wall Application, Learning Media, and Vocabulary Mastery

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the strengths and the weaknesses of the use of "Speed Up English 6" textbook through contextual teaching and learning of the sixth grade students of SDN IKIP I Makassar. This research employed a descriptive method. The data source was "Speed Up English 6" as the reference book of the sixth grade students of SDN IKIP I Makassar. It was written by Rita Kurniawan and Naning Partini, and published by Yudhistira in 2006. The informants were 10 students of class 6' and 10 students of class 6. The collected data were analyzed by using percentage descriptive analysis. The result of this research showed that (1) the strengths of this textbook lay on its colorfulness either its cover or contents and its pictures which are related to the real world as well as provide syllabus based on standardized national curriculum, (2) the weaknesses of this textbook lay on some activities which are not related to the syllabus, and (3) this research found that Contextual Teaching and Learning contribute to maximize the use of "Speed Up English 6" textbook.Key words: Speed up English 6, textbook, contextual teaching and learning.

Abstract

Due to the wide spread of Covid-19, the government started to began online learning activities. This new policies created a new learning environment for students and teacher. This study focused on teacher strategies in teaching writing skills in pandemic era. The aims of this study are to answer the research questions: what are teacher strategies in teaching writing skills during online class and how did the teacher implemented these strategies during online class. This study used qualitative approached. The subject of this study were English Teacher from SMK Negeri 8 Makassar, SMK Negeri 4 Enrekang, and SMA Negeri 5 Enrekang. The research instrument for this study is interview protocol. The result of this study showed that each teacher have a different strategies and how they implemented it. As the interviewed results, these teachers used two strategies, that are Cognitive strategy and Affective strategy. For Cognitive strategy, there are several methods that implemented by the teacher, namely, question and answer, comprehend and understanding, and teaching method. While for the Affective strategy, the method that implemented by teacher is using student’s favourites and experiences as the writing topic.Keywords— Teacher Strategies, Writing Skills, Online Learning.

Abstract

English is one of the international languages, as well as the UN's official language (United Nations).  Mastering  English  will  increase  an  individual's  opportunities  to  learn  about  the world  and  compete  on  a  global  scale.  Nonetheless,  English  proficiency  among  Indonesians remains quite low. According to EF-EPI, Indonesia is in the low ability category for English proficiency, ranking 80th out of 112 countries. Then why is it like this when English has been a required subject in schools and has been taught for a long time to Indonesian students? In truth, there are inhibiting factors affecting students' English performance. In truth, there are inhibiting factors affecting students' English performance. The purpose of this research is to determine the factors that inhibit performance by focusing on data sources. specifical students from SMK-SMTI Makassar 12th grade in the 2021/2022 academic year. This study's findings revealed  ten  inhibiting  factors which  are grammar,  vocabulary,  lack  of  self-confidence, familiarity  and  feeling  toward  the  topic,  self-esteem,  interlocutor,  self-consciousness, pronunciation, shyness, and anxiety. Keywords— English-Speaking Skills, Inhibiting Factors.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to improve learners' vocabulary ability. through Synectic strategies. pre-experimental design is the method used by researchers with one group pre-test and post-test. The population in this study were students of class X MAN 1 Barru in the academic year 2022/2023. Cluster random sampling is used in this research. in this case, the researcher chose class X MIA 1 as a representation of the population consisting of 26 students. The results of this study prove that there is a significant difference between students' scores before treatment and students' scores after treatment are evident from the students' pre-test normal scores (56,88) and should be lower than the post-test means (87,04). In addition, by using a Synectic strategy, students can remember words, train students’ creativity, and are effective in teaching vocabulary at MAN 1 Barru Keywords— Synectic Strategy and improve Vocabulary

Abstract

 This study aims to investigate students' perceptions of the effectiveness of online learning in intensive speaking courses. The research method used is the descriptive-qualitative method. The participants in this study were students of the 2022 class of the English Language Education study program, Makassar State University for the 2022/2023 academic year. Eight students were selected as participants using a simple random sampling technique. The instrument of this research is an interview. Qualitative descriptive analysis was used to analyze the data collected in the interview transcripts. Overall, students have positive and negative perceptions of the effectiveness of online learning in intensive speaking courses. The students revealed that online learning in intensive speaking courses had positive and negative impacts on their learning process. Positive perceptions of online learning in intensive speaking courses include 1) increasing skills, 2) flexibility, and 3) increasing self-confidence. In contrast, the negative perceptions found from online learning in intensive speaking courses are 1) non-technical constraints, 2) technical constraints, and 3) lack of interaction. Even though students' perceptions varied, based on the data obtained, students' positive perceptions are more dominant than their negative perceptions. In addition, they all argued that online learning in intensive speaking courses was effective. Therefore, it can be concluded that online learning in intensive speaking courses is effective.Keywords— Intensive Speaking Course, Online Learning, Effectiveness, Students’ Perceptions

Abstract

This study investigates the use of Nearpod as a tool to enhance English and aims to examine students' perceptions of using Nearpod as a learning medium while learning English learning at SMPN 4 Sungguminasa. The findings reveal that Nearpod significantly aids students in improving their English skills, particularly writing, speaking, and vocabulary development. Its interactive features, such as quizzes and gamified activities, make learning more engaging and help students comprehend materials more effectively. Moreover, the app supports memory practice and fosters vocabulary expansion. Students' perceptions of Nearpod were divided into positive and negative. Those with positive perceptions highlighted its motivational, engaging, and task-supportive nature, along with its ability to create a competitive learning atmosphere. Conversely, some students expressed concerns over its reliance on internet connectivity, which limits accessibility in offline settings. Overall, Nearpod proves to be a valuable yet context-dependent resource for English learning.Keywords: perceptions, Nearpod, learning English

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the efficiency of nano learning methodologies with the Tiktok application in enhancing students' vocabulary. The study used a quantitative approach using an experimental design that was quasi-experimental. The population of this study was students in class VIII at SMPN 4 Sungguminasa, and The total population here is 330 students from eight grade while the sample population is 60 students. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test. The results of the data analysis show that the mean score of post-test significantly higher than the pre- test, where the category was improved from very poor (37) to a good (73) category. The data was analyzed used the Wilcoxon test which shows Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) namely 0.022 and 0.135 bigger than 0.005 (<0.005) indicating that the alternative hypothesis is accepted and in the Mann Whitney U test Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed), namely 0.135, bigger than 0.005 (0.135<0.005) indicating that there is a significant difference so it can be concluded that the the use of nano learning strategies has influenced the students' vocabulary enhancement positively, it is shown that there are differences in the average between the learning outcomes of the pretest and the posttest, therefore H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. Based on the hypothesis of this study, there is a significant difference between the control and experimental groups when using nano learning strategies to enhance vocabulary skills.Keywords: Nano learning, vocabularies, tiktok application.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the used of teachers strategy in teaching English and students reading activity in Indonesian secondary education using merdeka curriculum class VIII.  This research used the method of qualitative descriptive with total samples of this study are 2 teachers and 8 students that consist of 4 students in different class, with 2 female and 2 male in classroom. This research using purposive sampling method. In this research, data collection was carried out by interview protocol. The results of the data analysis show that the teachers in teaching English used the strategy DRA, KWL, SQ4R and QRA. In addition, the students reading activity in classroom are the students was order to analyze the each of the body paragraph on their book besides students was order to analyze the descriptive text.
