Abstract

Background: The digital divide in Indonesia's underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost (3T) regions creates significant challenges for mathematics education in elementary schools. Traditional teaching methods often fail to engage students, resulting in low learning motivation and poor academic outcomes. Objective: This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of 'EduGame Mathematics,' a gamification-based mobile learning application designed to enhance learning interest among elementary school students in 3T regions. Methods: A quantitative experimental research design was employed using a pretest-posttest control group design. The study involved 120 elementary school students (grades 4-6) from three schools in 3T regions, randomly assigned to experimental (n=60) and control (n=60) groups. Data collection instruments included learning motivation questionnaires, mathematics achievement tests, and application usability assessments. Statistical analysis was conducted using independent t-tests and paired t-tests with SPSS 25.0. Results: The experimental group demonstrated significantly higher learning motivation scores compared to the control group (M=85.4, SD=8.2 vs M=68.7, SD=9.1; t(118)=10.45, p<0.001). Mathematics achievement scores showed substantial improvement in the experimental group, with a mean increase of 24.3 points (from 62.1 to 86.4), while the control group showed minimal improvement of 5.2 points (from 61.8 to 67.0). The application received high usability ratings (M=4.31/5.0) and demonstrated strong acceptance among students and teachers. Conclusion: The EduGame Mathematics application effectively enhances learning interest and achievement among elementary school students in 3T regions. The gamification approach successfully addresses educational challenges in resource-constrained environments, providing a scalable solution for improving mathematics education quality in remote areas of Indonesia.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of gamification on student motivation and engagement in e-learning environments from an educational psychology perspective. The research aims to evaluate how game-based elements—such as points, badges, leaderboards, and challenges—affect intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, learning persistence, and cognitive engagement among students. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through surveys, system analytics, and interviews involving 210 undergraduate students enrolled in online learning courses. Quantitative results show that gamified features significantly enhance students’ intrinsic motivation and foster higher participation rates, while qualitative findings reveal that meaningful design and feedback mechanisms contribute to a more positive learning experience. The study highlights that gamification is most effective when aligned with psychological principles such as self-determination, goal orientation, and flow theory. These findings provide important implications for instructional designers and educators in creating engaging digital learning environments that promote sustained motivation and academic achievement.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the implementation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) to enhance critical thinking skills among junior high school students in Indonesia. Recognizing the limitations of traditional teaching methods that emphasize memorization, this research investigates how PBL, which centers on student-driven problem-solving, impacts students"™ analytical abilities, collaboration, and self-directed learning. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with three teachers and ten students, and analysis of student assignments and reflections over a 12-session period. Thematic analysis revealed that PBL effectively promotes critical thinking by encouraging students to question assumptions, evaluate multiple perspectives, and engage in meaningful dialogue with peers. Additionally, the study found that teachers shifted their roles from information providers to facilitators, which positively influenced student engagement and autonomy. However, challenges such as time constraints, curriculum alignment, and the need for teacher training were identified as barriers to optimal implementation. The findings suggest that with adequate support and adaptation, PBL can serve as a powerful pedagogical approach to develop critical thinking skills in junior high school settings. The study contributes to the growing body of research advocating for innovative instructional strategies in secondary education and offers practical recommendations for educators and policymakers aiming to foster higher-order thinking skills in adolescents.

Abstract

Collaborative learning has gained significant attention as an effective pedagogical approach in fostering academic achievement and 21st-century skills among students. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of collaborative learning in improving student outcomes at the junior high school level. Employing a qualitative research design, this article synthesizes findings from recent studies published within the last five years to explore how collaborative learning impacts academic performance, engagement, and skill development. The analysis reveals that collaborative learning enhances students' academic outcomes by promoting deeper comprehension and critical thinking through peer interaction and cooperative problem-solving. Furthermore, it increases student engagement and motivation by creating participatory and interactive learning environments. Beyond academic benefits, collaborative learning also develops essential skills such as communication, teamwork, and adaptability, which are crucial for success in the 21st century. However, challenges such as unequal participation within groups and the need for effective teacher facilitation remain key barriers to its implementation. This study discusses strategies to address these challenges, including designing tasks that foster positive interdependence, providing clear roles within groups, and leveraging technology to enhance collaboration. The findings underscore the transformative potential of collaborative learning in junior high schools while highlighting areas for improvement and further research. By integrating collaborative learning effectively into classroom practices, educators can create meaningful learning experiences that prepare students for academic success and future professional demands.

Abstract

Mathematics has an instrumental function in enhancing the quality of Indonesian citizens. However, as science and technology progress and the digital age intensifies, it has become imperative to modify the mathematical learning paradigm to align it with the demands of the 21st century. The research objectives were to ascertain the following: The study sought to answer three research questions(1) the difference in the improvement of mathematical critical thinking ability of students who are given problem-based learning with students who are given direct learning; (2) the interaction of learning with initial mathematics ability on the improvement of students' mathematical critical thinking ability; (3) the difference in the improvement of learning independence of students who are given problem-based learning with students who are given direct learning. The findings of the study can be summarized as follows: (1) students who received problem-based learning exhibited a greater improvement in their mathematical critical thinking abilities than those who received direct learning; (2) there was no interaction between learning and initial mathematical ability on the improvement of mathematical critical thinking abilities; (3) students who received problem-based learning demonstrated a greater improvement in their learning independence than those who received direct learning.
