Abstract

Aging causes significant physiological changes in the skin, mainly due to decreased cellular function, decreased regenerative capacity, and changes in the extracellular matrix. External factors such as UV radiation, unhealthy lifestyle choices, and inadequate skin care further aggravate facial skin aging. This screening activity uses the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Action) method, which includes planning, implementation, evaluation and corrective action. Facial skin health was assessed using a skin analysis tool, and participants were provided with education regarding preventive measures. This activity consisted of 127 participants (30 men and 97 women). It was found that the average wrinkle, roughness, moist, and UV damage were 26.3%; 24%; 61.4%; and 38.3%. A comprehensive approach including lifestyle modifications, topical treatments, and regular check-ups is essential to reduce the effects of aging and improve skin health in seniors.

Abstract

Aging is associated with significant changes in body composition, specifically a decrease in lean body mass and an increase in fat mass. These changes contribute to the prevalence of obesity and sarcopenia in the elderly population, impacting quality of life, morbidity and mortality. A complex interaction between hormonal decline, chronic inflammation, nutritional deficiencies, and reduced physical activity underlies these changes. This activity uses the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) methodology to screen for obesity and sarcopenia in the elderly at St. Mary's Church, Francis of Assisi. We use Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) to measure body composition, which includes total body fat, visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, and muscle mass. Among 32 participants, the average total body fat, visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, and muscle mass were 36.5% each; 9.6%; 9.68%; and 21.5%. Body composition assessment using BIA is very important in managing the elderly's health. Preventive strategies, including tailored exercise programmes, nutritional counselling, and lifestyle modifications, are essential to maintain muscle mass and prevent excessive fat deposition, thereby improving quality of life and reducing morbidity and mortality. Abstract

Adolescent obesity is an increasingly worrying global health problem. Consuming high-calorie foods (junk food) is thought to be one of the main risk factors. This study aims to analyze the role of high-calorie foods on the incidence of obesity in senior high school adolescents in Tangerang Regency, Indonesia. This community-based observational research involved 350 randomly selected senior high school students in Tangerang Regency. Data were collected through food questionnaires, anthropometric measurements, and biochemical examinations. Statistical analysis was performed using logistic regression to identify the association between junk food consumption and obesity, with adjustment for potential confounding factors. The results showed that consumption of high-calorie foods was significantly associated with an increased risk of obesity in adolescents (OR = 2.87; 95% CI: 1.65-4.98). Adolescents who frequently consume junk food have a 2.87 times higher risk of becoming obese than those who rarely consume it. Apart from that, a positive relationship was also found between the frequency of consumption of junk food body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference. Consumption of high-calorie foods has a significant role in increasing the risk of obesity in senior high school adolescents in Tangerang Regency. Comprehensive nutritional and public health interventions are needed to reduce junk food consumption and promote healthy eating patterns to prevent obesity in adolescents.

Abstract

Obesity in adolescents is an increasingly worrying global health problem. Unhealthy eating patterns, especially consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF), are thought to be one of the main risk factors. This study aims to examine the relationship between UPF consumption and the risk of obesity in adolescents in Jambi City, Indonesia. Cross-sectional observational research was conducted on 350 adolescents aged 13-18 years in Jambi City. UPF consumption data was collected using the NOVA questionnaire, while anthropometric data (height, weight) was measured directly. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between UPF consumption and the risk of obesity, with adjustment for potential confounding variables such as gender, age, and socio-economic status. The results showed that high UPF consumption (above the median 4.2 servings/day) significantly increased the risk of obesity in adolescents in Jambi City (OR = 2.87; 95% CI: 1.65-4.98; p < 0.001). This relationship remained significant after adjusting for confounding variables. No significant relationship was found between gender, age, and socioeconomic status with the risk of obesity. High UPF consumption is an independent risk factor for the incidence of obesity in adolescents in Jambi City. Comprehensive public health interventions are needed to reduce UPF consumption and promote healthy eating patterns in adolescents.

Abstract

Hyperuricemia, characterized by increased serum uric acid levels, occurs due to an imbalance between uric acid production and excretion. The prevalence in adults and the elderly in China is 12.69% and is higher in men (17.7%) than women (8.5%). Contributing factors such as genetics, diet, and lifestyle changes, lead to an increased risk of gout, kidney stones, and cardiovascular disease. Chronic hyperuricemia can cause joint damage and deformity due to the deposition of urate crystals. This activity uses the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Action) methodology to screen for hyperuricemia in the elderly at St. Mary's Church. Francis of Assisi. The screening results showed that 12 people (33.33%) of the 36 participants had hyperuricemia. Early detection of hyperuricemia is very important in preventing complications such as gout and cardiovascular disease. Regular check-ups and lifestyle changes can significantly improve health outcomes and quality of life for seniors.

Abstract

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that the global population aged over 60 years will increase from 900 million in 2015 to 2 billion in 2050. This demographic is particularly vulnerable to disease and disability, with declining haemoglobin levels long considered a consequence of aging. Nutritional deficiencies, chronic diseases, kidney disease, haematological malignancies, and anemia of unknown cause can all contribute to anemia in the elderly. This significantly impacts physical performance, cognitive function, and overall health. We carried out this activity at St. Francis Assisi, Jakarta, with 36 participants. We perform a physical examination and a complete blood count, including haemoglobin and hematocrit levels, to detect nemia. Among the 36 participants, 18 people (50%) had mild anaemia, 6 people (16.7%) had moderate anaemia, and 1 person (2.8%) had very severe anaemia. Anaemia in the elderly can cause severe health consequences, including physical and cognitive decline, increased hospitalisations, and death. Routine screening for haemoglobin and hematocrit levels is essential for early detection and intervention, improving quality of life and health outcomes for older adults.

Abstract

With the global prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome increasing, innovative therapeutic strategies are needed to reduce this prevalence. One approach being explored is Intermittent Fasting. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Intermittent Fasting in managing Metabolic Syndrome, obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and cardiovascular risk factors. Literature searches were conducted for the period from 2010 to 2023. The analysis focused on randomized controlled trials, clinical studies, case reports, case series, and review articles assessing the effects of Intermittent Fasting on metabolic syndrome. It was found that Intermittent Fasting contributes to weight loss, improved insulin sensitivity, and modulation of leptin and adiponectin levels. Although some studies show results similar to traditional calorie restriction, Intermittent Fasting has shown potential in improving lipid profiles and reducing blood pressure. Despite its promising potential, the implementation of Intermittent Fasting in clinical practice requires a deeper understanding of its mechanisms. Furthermore, additional research is needed to evaluate the feasibility of adopting Intermittent Fasting as a lifestyle. Intermittent Fasting shows benefits in managing obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular risk factors.
