Abstract

Abstract

The 21st century is characterised by rapid technological advancements that necessitate a transformation in pedagogical approaches, particularly concerning the cultivation of students' critical thinking skills. Within the context of Citizenship Education, critical thinking serves as a fundamental competency for the reflective and rational examination of socio-civic issues. However, the persistent dominance of conventional didactic methods frequently results in student disengagement and diminished academic participation. Consequently, this descriptive qualitative study aims to explore the integration of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model with interactive video technology to enhance students' critical thinking capabilities. Data were gathered via in-depth interviews with ten students and subsequently analysed through systematic stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion verification. The findings indicate that the synergistic application of PBL and interactive video fosters a more active, contextualised, and reflective learning environment. Students demonstrated discernible improvements across four dimensions of critical thinking: analysing issues using visual scaffolding, formulating collaborative solutions, deducing logical conclusions grounded in theoretical frameworks and social realities, and evaluating arguments ethically and contextually. Ultimately, these results suggest that integrating PBL with interactive video significantly facilitates the comprehensive development of students' critical cognitive patterns.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the internalization of civic education, especially in the effort to foster the spirit of nationalism and love the country from two salaf Islamic boarding schools in Madura between the al-Mubarok Lanbulan Tambelangan Islamic Boarding School in Sampang and the Islamic Boarding School of Al-Is'af Kalabaan Guluk-Guluk Sumenep. The research subjects who became the information center consisted of caregivers, asatidz and administrators with data collection techniques including interviews, observation and documentation. For data analysis, the researcher used Miles and Huberman's interactive analysis technique. To test the validity of the data, it is used triangulation technique. The results showed that the internalization of civic education in these pesantrens was conveyed in three ways; First, through learning. The students are taught the morals of the state and love the country through the clasical book of 'Idhatun Nasyi'in and through civics education learning in the equality education system applied at the al-Mubarok Islamic boarding school. Meanwhile, for pesantren al-Is'af, it is applied through additional explanations in book recitation conditionally. Second, through the extra activities, including; organizing, bahsul masail, flag ceremony on 17 of August and the commemoration of the national santri day at al-Mubarok, as well as through bahsul masail and muhadara activities at the al-Is'af boarding school. Third, through social activities of students in the internal boarding school.

Abstract

The limited research on the collaboration between traditional leaders (Blater) and religious scholars (ulama) in community development forms the background of this study, despite the significant role such cooperation plays in preserving local values and strengthening religious life, particularly in Sampang. This study aims to examine the forms, strategies, and challenges of integrating local and religious values through the collaboration between Blater and ulama in the context of community empowerment. A qualitative case study approach was employed, involving 12 key informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation, and analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that the collaboration between Blater and ulama actively integrates local values into religious practices, reinforces social bonds among residents, and supports community empowerment initiatives. However, several challenges persist, such as resistance from certain community members and limited human and material resources. These findings align with theories of social capital and value integration, which emphasize the importance of synergy between traditional and religious institutions in community development. The main conclusion of this study is that the collaboration between Blater and ulama serves as a key factor in uniting local and religious values to strengthen social structures and accelerate community empowerment. The study offers theoretical contributions to the discourse on socio-religious cooperation, as well as practical recommendations for local governments and stakeholders to promote sustainable and context-sensitive collaborative programs. Moreover, it opens opportunities for further exploration in other regions to better understand the dynamics of local cooperation in community empowerment contexts.

Abstract

This study is driven by the limited research on the struggles of rural women in pursuing higher education amidst the dominance of patriarchal culture, despite the significant impact of this phenomenon on improving human resource quality and promoting gender equality at the local level. The research aims to describe and analyze the motivation, family support, and social challenges faced by women in Plakpak Village, Pegantenan District, Pamekasan Regency in accessing higher education. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed. Ten participants were selected through purposive sampling, consisting of five women with higher education backgrounds, three parents, and two community leaders. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that women's motivation to pursue higher education is driven by spiritual and moral values, such as the desire to gain knowledge, elevate family dignity, and challenge gender stereotypes. Parental support, particularly from mothers and fathers, emerged as a key factor in overcoming the constraints of patriarchal norms. However, community responses remain mixed, with both support and resistance toward women's roles in higher education. The study concludes that higher education enhances women's social status but has not yet fully eliminated gender disparities due to the persistent strength of patriarchal values. The implications highlight the importance of synergy between education, family, and community in fostering gender equality in alignment with the principles of justice in Islam.

Abstract

Studies on communication ethics grounded in Madurese local wisdom, particularly the value of tengka as a normative guide for honor and respect in social interaction, remain relatively limited, even though this phenomenon significantly affects the continuity of cultural identity and communication patterns amid globalization. This study aimed to analyze tengka as the ethical foundation of communication within Madurese society and to examine shifts in the use of the Madurese language, especially its speech levels, under the influence of globalization. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method with an ethnographic approach, involving members of the Madurese linguistic community selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, cultural observation, and literature review, and were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns of meaning and communicative practices associated with tengka. The findings show that the levels of the Madurese language (very refined, refined, and coarse) function as a social mechanism for expressing respect, maintaining harmony, and upholding the value of tengka. However, the dominance of the Indonesian language in public spaces and rapid social change have weakened younger generations’ understanding of speech levels and the value of tengka. These findings reinforce cross-cultural communication ethics theory that emphasizes the importance of local norms in maintaining social relations and affirm that tengka plays a central role in shaping communication ethics in Madurese society, despite facing the challenges of modernization. The study’s implications include strengthening the literature on communication ethics rooted in local culture and providing recommendations for local governments, educational institutions, and cultural communities to enhance the preservation of the Madurese language and the value of tengka through cultural education and language revitalization programs, while also opening avenues for further research on the adaptation of tengka in digital contexts and among younger generations.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to explain the reality of Madura-Papua conflict vulnerability in Manokwari and the process of internalizing the values of tengka and Basudara, by highlighting the integration of two cultural value systems from migrant communities and Indigenous residents as a conflict mitigation mechanism in a multiethnic social space. Design/methods/approach – This study used a qualitative approach with a single case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, field observation, and documentation involving 12 purposively selected informants, including harmony figures, customary leaders, educators, Madurese residents, Papuan residents, and supporting informants. The data were analyzed thematically through source and technique triangulation, and were interpreted using the concepts of externalization, objectivation, and internalization in social construction theory. Findings – The results of the study indicate that Madura-Papua relations do not take the form of open communal conflict that occurs continuously, but rather personal and situational tensions triggered by offense, misinterpretation, individual disturbances, socio-economic jealousy, and vigilance toward the security context. At the same time, economic interaction, education, social cooperation, neighborly relations, and communication among figures remain supports for social harmony. The values of tengka and Basudara are internalized through three arenas, namely family, school, and society, which shape the habituation of mutual respect, deliberation, mutual cooperation, politeness, and prudence in cross-group interactions. Originality/Value – This study offers a model of cross-community value internalization that explains how cultural values are habituated, institutionalized, and accepted as social guidelines to reduce conflict vulnerability. This study also contributes to Islamic education studies and religious studies by showing the role of value education, religious moderation, and coexistence in families, schools, and multiethnic communities. Practical Implications – These findings can be used by families, schools, higher education institutions, local governments, FKUB, customary leaders, religious leaders, and harmony organizations to develop multicultural education, interethnic dialogue, local wisdom-based learning, peaceful mediation training, cross-group mutual cooperation activities, and critical literacy. In addition, these findings support the development of value education, religious moderation, social coexistence, and critical literacy in the context of Islamic education and multiethnic society.
