Abstract

This systematic literature review examines the integration of local wisdom into picture storybook media to enhance Reading comprehension among elementary school students. The study synthesizes findings from 24 peer-reviewed articles published between 2020 and 2025, focusing on the effectiveness, pedagogical advantages, and implementation challenges of culturally responsive picture storybooks in Indonesian elementary education contexts. The review follows PRISMA guidelines for systematic review, examining studies that integrate local cultural elements, including folklore, traditional values, and regional narratives, into visual storytelling materials. Findings indicate that picture storybooks embedded with local wisdom consistently demonstrate significant improvements in Reading comprehension, with effect sizes ranging from medium to large across various studies. The integration of familiar cultural contexts enhances student engagement, motivation, and understanding of the context of Reading materials. Key advantages include increased relevance to students’ lived experiences, strengthened cultural identity, and improved literacy outcomes across diverse demographic settings. However, limitations persist in terms of geographical scope, scalability challenges, and the need for sustained teacher professional development. This review contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting culturally responsive teaching approaches in literacy education. It provides recommendations for researchers, educators, and policymakers seeking to implement culturally grounded Reading materials in elementary education settings.

Abstract

This research aims to explore mathematical concepts in Batik Obor Sewu of the Samin community in Bojonegoro and implement them in teaching addition and subtraction operations of whole numbers in grade IV at SD Negeri Mayangkawis II. This study employs a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods for cultural exploration, followed by implementation of the CACAHSEWU worksheet based on ethnomathematics. Data collection was conducted through interviews with community leaders (Samin descendants) and batik artisans from the Samin community, learning observations, documentation, and analysis of student work. The results show that Batik Obor Sewu contains mathematical concepts such as repeating patterns, numbers, arithmetic operations, measurement, and economic transactions that can be integrated into elementary school mathematics learning. Implementation of the CACAHSEWU worksheet with 11 students showed positive results, where the average student mastery in addition problems reached 76.4% and subtraction 50.9%, with an overall average of 63.6% in the good category. The 25.5% difference between addition and subtraction abilities indicates that subtraction operations with borrowing techniques remain a major challenge for grade IV students. From the motivation aspect, 81.8% of students stated they were more interested in learning mathematics with local cultural contexts, and 63.6% became more aware of the importance of preserving local culture. Error analysis revealed that 72.7% of students experienced difficulties in the borrowing process, and 81.8% struggled with consecutive borrowing. Ethnomathematics learning based on Batik Obor Sewu proved effective in increasing student motivation and conceptual understanding, but needs to be combined with adequate procedural practice, especially for subtraction operations. This research makes an important contribution to Indonesian ethnomathematics literature by demonstrating that local wisdom can be an effective bridge between formal mathematics and students' real-life contexts, while preserving cultural heritage for the younger generation.

Abstract

Creative thinking skills are fundamental to education, so a strategy to improve them in line with the current era is needed. Therefore, there needs to be a combination of improving creative thinking skills with learning grounded in culture and humanism. This study aims to describe creative thinking skills, learning needs, media design, and media validity. This study used a development design with a 3D scheme (Define, Design, Development). Data collection was conducted through observation, design, and validity testing. The results showed that students' creative thinking skills were low. Additionally, in physics, students still require visualizations of the concepts presented. Furthermore, the observation results revealed that students support the media development. This posed a challenge for researchers in developing SiVEKa (Simulasi Virtual Ethnophsyics Kekehan). In the media design process, the researcher based the design on student observations and the relevant learning theory. The validity results indicated that the SiVEKa media was highly valid, enabling further testing. In addition, this study contributes to preserving culture through learning. This study hopes to contribute to learning using ethno-integrated technology.

Abstract

The implementation of character education in primary schools often lacks contextual relevance, relying on normative frameworks that do not connect learning to students’ cultural identity. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of integrating keris culture and traditional ecological knowledge into character education through a glocal pedagogical approach. This quantitative survey involved 70 primary school students as the sample. Data were collected using a 20-item Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed descriptively based on percentages. The results indicate high levels of agreement among students on indicators such as respect for culture (77.1%), environmental awareness (71.4%), and curiosity about traditions (74.3%), demonstrating strong internalization of character values through culturally embedded learning experiences. The findings confirm that integrating cultural heritage and traditional ecological knowledge can enhance character value internalization, particularly in respect for culture, environmental awareness, and curiosity about traditions. Furthermore, the glocal approach enables universal values such as honesty, responsibility, and collaboration to acquire deeper meaning when linked to local cultural experiences. The implications suggest that culture-based character education is not only effective in shaping students’ ethics and cultural identity but also relevant in promoting social and ecological sustainability in a global era.
