Abstract

Fatumuti Village, Noemuti Subdistrict, North Central Timor Regency, is served by one primary health center covering 12 villages. Most residents work in agriculture, increasing the risk of open wounds and encouraging the continued use of medicinal plants. Although ethnomedicinal studies on wound treatment have been conducted in other regions of Indonesia, this practice has never been scientifically documented in Fatumuti Village.  This study aimed to document the ethnomedicinal practices used by the Fatumuti Village community for treating open wounds, including medicinal plant diversity, plant parts used, and methods of preparation and application. Methods. A qualitative descriptive design with purposive sampling was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving 3 key informants and 27 triangulation informants from March to May 2026. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. Nineteen medicinal plant species from 13 families were identified. Leaves were the most frequently used plant part (13 species). Preparation methods included squeezing, pounding, chewing with rice, extracting sap, grating, and oil preparation, while remedies were applied topically one to three times daily, either singly or in combination. This study provides the first scientific documentation of medicinal plants used for open wound treatment in Fatumuti Village and offers baseline data for future pharmacological research and preservation of local ethnomedicinal knowledge.

Abstract

The development of smart nanomedicine systems has revolutionized the field of drug delivery, offering improved precision in targeting diseased tissues and minimizing the side effects of treatments. Traditional drug delivery methods often suffer from non-specific targeting and high systemic toxicity, limiting their therapeutic potential. Smart nanomedicine systems, designed to respond to specific stimuli such as pH, temperature, or enzymes, allow for controlled and targeted drug release, thus enhancing therapeutic efficacy while reducing off-target effects. This research investigates the design, characterization, and application of smart nanomedicine systems for precision drug release and reduced toxicity. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the efficiency of these systems in delivering drugs to specific sites, such as tumors, while minimizing damage to healthy tissues. In vitro and in vivo models are used to assess the release profiles, bio-distribution, and toxicity of the nanomedicine systems. The results show that smart nanomedicine systems significantly enhance drug accumulation at target sites and reduce systemic toxicity compared to conventional delivery methods. In conclusion, the use of smart nanomedicine systems offers a promising approach for precision medicine, improving therapeutic outcomes and reducing adverse effects associated with traditional drug delivery.

Abstract

Background: Red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. Rubrum) is rich in bioactive compounds, such as gingerol and shogaol, which are highly sensitive to type of extraction solvent. Therefore, a chromatogram profile analysis is required to determine most effective solvent. Purpose: This study aims to compare chromatogram profiles of 95% ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts of red ginger rhizome using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Method: This descriptive laboratory study extracted 90 gr of red ginger crude drug (simplisia) powder from Ende Regency, Flores, via maceration using 95% ethanol and ethyl acetate for 3 × 24 hours. Resulting filtrates were evaporated to obtain thick extracts, which were then analyzed using HPLC to evaluate the number of peaks, retention time, and peak area. Results: 95% ethanol extract produced a more complex chromatogram profile with 30 peaks, whereas the ethyl acetate extract yielded 22 peaks. This difference indicates superiority of 95% ethanol in extracting secondary metabolite compounds across a wider polarity range compared to ethyl acetate. Conclusion: There is a significant difference in chromatogram profiles between two extracts. 95% ethanol solvent proved to be more effective in extracting bioactive compounds from red ginger rhizome than ethyl acetate, serving as a baseline for herbal raw material standardization and a foundation for future research.   Keywords: HPLC; Red ginger; Zingiber officinale var. Rubrum.

Abstract

Background: Faloak (Sterculia quadrifida R.Br.) is a medicinal plant native to East Nusa Tenggara that has potential as an antioxidant. Purpose: To determine total flavonoid, tannin, and phenolic contents of 95% ethanol and aqueous extracts of faloak root bark, stem bark, and twigs, and to evaluate antioxidant activity of selected extract. Method: This quantitative descriptive-exploratory research used maceration (95% ethanol) and decoction (water) methods. Metabolite contents were determined spectrophotometrically, while antioxidant activity was tested using the DPPH method ( ). Results: Highest secondary metabolite content was consistently found in the twigs. In the 95% ethanol extract, flavonoid, tannin, and phenolic contents of twigs were 0.7495, 38.8472, and 94.2777 mg/g extract, respectively, while in aqueous extract, they were 0.8093, 31.6775, and 59.7342 mg/g extract. 95% ethanol extract was selected as superior extract because it yielded higher metabolite levels than aqueous extract. DPPH testing showed  values for root bark, stem bark, and twigs of 26.502, 36.110, and 21.524 ppm, respectively, classifying all samples into very strong antioxidant category. Conclusion: Flavonoid, tannin, and phenolic contents vary depending on the plant part and solvent type. Faloak twigs possess highest metabolite content and most potent antioxidant activity.   Keywords: Antioxidant; Faloak; Metabolites; Sterculia Quadrifida R.Br.
