Abstract

Background: The integration of Computer-Based Testing (CBT) in education has grown significantly as a means to improve efficiency, reduce exam malpractice, and streamline assessment logistics. However, in semi-rural Islamic schools (madrasah/pesantren) in Indonesia, students are often restricted from using smartphones during the academic year and are only allowed to use them during final exams. This creates a unique challenge in evaluating both the technical and emotional readiness of students who encounter CBT with minimal digital exposure. Research Objectives: This study aims to examine the readiness and perception of Grade 9 students toward smartphone-based CBT in English final examinations at MTs Darussalam Impa-Impa. The study specifically investigates how students’ limited and episodic use of digital devices influences their technical ability and emotional responses, such as stress, confidence, and willingness to use CBT in the future. Methods: Using a descriptive quantitative design, the study collected data from 25 Grade 9 students through a structured Likert-scale questionnaire adapted from prior validated instruments. The questionnaire measured two dimensions: digital readiness and perception. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to interpret the findings, including mean scores, standard deviation, and visual representation. Results: The results show that students demonstrated moderate technical readiness (M = 3.6–3.9) but low emotional comfort, particularly in areas related to stress (M = 2.8) and willingness to adopt CBT in future exams (M = 2.6). These findings support the hypothesis that irregular digital exposure leads to reduced cognitive and emotional preparedness for CBT. Conclusions: This study highlights the need for context-sensitive CBT implementation in low-tech religious schools. Future research should explore training modules or simulations to enhance digital familiarity and emotional resilience among students with limited exposure.

Abstract

Background: Reading ability is a foundational literacy skill that plays a crucial role in children’s academic development. One of the key predictors of early reading success is phonological awareness, which refers to the ability to identify and manipulate sound structures in spoken language. Despite its significance, many early-grade learners still experience difficulties in decoding words due to low sensitivity to phonological components. Research Objectives: This study aims to examine the influence of phonological awareness on children’s reading ability and to identify which aspects of phonological awareness most strongly support word recognition and reading fluency at Ummusshabri School, Kolaka. Methods: This research employed a qualitative descriptive design involving early-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with teachers, and document review of students’ reading assessments. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns that reflect the relationship between phonological awareness skills and reading performance. Results: The findings show that students with stronger phonological awareness, particularly in phoneme segmentation, blending, and initial sound discrimination—demonstrated more accurate and fluent word reading. Students with limited phonological awareness exhibited difficulties in decoding, frequent mispronunciations, and slower reading rates. Teachers also reported that targeted phonological activities improved students’ reading progress over time. Conclusions: The study concludes that phonological awareness plays a substantial role in shaping early reading ability. Strengthening this skill through structured and engaging phonological instruction is essential for supporting students’ literacy development. Further research may explore intervention models to enhance phonological awareness in diverse classroom contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of memory strategies in vocabulary learning among junior high school EFL learners in an Indonesian Islamic school context. Although vocabulary memorization is commonly emphasized in classroom practice, limited attention has been given to how young learners cognitively process and retain lexical items. This study addresses this gap by examining the types and frequency of memory strategies used by students in a daily “password class” routine, where learners recall English words before entering the classroom. A quantitative descriptive design was employed involving 21 seventh-grade students. Data were collected using an adapted version of Gu’s (2018) Vocabulary Learning Questionnaire (VLQ 6.4), focusing on three categories of memory strategies: rehearsal, encoding, and activation. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential analysis (One-Way ANOVA and Tukey HSD). The findings revealed statistically significant differences among the three strategies (p < .001), with encoding strategies showing the highest mean score (M = 3.70), followed by activation (M = 3.34), and rehearsal strategies (M = 2.89). These results indicate that learners tend to engage more in deeper cognitive processing, such as association, visualization, and contextual use, rather than relying solely on repetition. This study contributes to understanding vocabulary learning strategies among young EFL learners by emphasizing the roles of encoding and activation strategies in vocabulary learning. Pedagogically, the findings suggest that meaningful, communicative activities should complement memorization routines to enhance vocabulary retention and productive language use.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the intentions and functions of illocutionary speech acts in the lyrics of the song “Taruh” by Nadin Amizah. Language, as the primary medium of communication, does not merely function as a tool for conveying information but also serves as a means of performing communicative actions, which can be examined through a pragmatic perspective, particularly the concept of illocutionary speech acts proposed by John Langshaw Austin. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using pragmatic analysis. The data consist of utterances found in the song lyrics, obtained from official sources, and collected through the listening and note-taking technique.The data analysis is based on Austin’s classification of illocutionary speech acts, which includes verdictives, exercitives, commissives, behabitives, and expositives. The findings reveal that the lyrics of “Taruh” contain all five types of illocutionary speech acts with various communicative intentions and functions, namely expressing judgments, directing attitudes, affirming commitments, conveying emotions, and providing explanations. The diversity of these speech acts indicates an integrated meaning that reflects the dynamics of interpersonal relationships, trust, and the speaker’s emotional experiences. Therefore, this study confirms that song lyrics are not only aesthetic in nature but also possess communicative and reflective dimensions in representing human inner experiences.

Abstract

Purpose – This study investigates the association between implementing gamification elements in a Learning Management System (LMS) and students' learning motivation in a German Grammar (Grammatik) course. Low learning motivation in repetitive and complex grammar instruction constitutes the primary background of this research. Methods – The study employed a one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design involving 30 students enrolled in the German Language Education Study Program. Data were collected using a Motivation Scale based on the ARCS model (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction) comprising 20 items on a five-point Likert scale. Data analysis utilized the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test and N-Gain score. Findings – A statistically significant improvement in learning motivation was observed following gamification implementation (Z = −4.782; p < 0.001; r = 0.87). The mean score increased from 63.13 (pretest) to 81.00 (posttest). Progress Bar (mean satisfaction = 4.63) and Points (4.52) received the highest student satisfaction ratings among the five implemented gamification elements. Research implications – Limitations include a small sample size (n = 30) from a single institution, a one-group design without a control group, and an intervention duration limited to one semester. Generalization of findings should be exercised with caution. Originality – This study represents one of the first empirical investigations of gamification within an institutional LMS in the context of German Grammar instruction in Indonesian higher education, developing an ARCS-based motivation instrument adapted for the Deutsch als Fremdsprache (DaF) context.

Abstract

Purpose – Academic writing proficiency remains a persistent challenge for university students in Indonesia. This study investigates whether differences in the user interface (UI) design of an Indonesian-language chatbot - specifically a formal/minimalist design versus a conversational/feature-rich design - produce significant differences in user experience (UX) within an academic writing practice platform at the higher education level. Methods – A quasi-experimental design was employed with 30 undergraduate students divided into two groups of 15. Participants interacted with their assigned chatbot interface across four writing sessions. Data were collected using the System Usability Scale (SUS), the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ), and a domain-specific seven-item Chatbot Response Quality instrument developed for the Indonesian academic writing context. Between-group differences were analysed using the Mann-Whitney U non-parametric test (α = .05). Findings – The conversational/feature-rich design (Design B) significantly outperformed the formal/minimalist design (Design A) on overall usability (Mean SUS: 88.17 vs. 72.67; p = .002), four of six UEQ dimensions - Attractiveness (p = .018), Perspicuity (p = .041), Stimulation (p = .001), and Novelty (p < .001) - and Indonesian-language chatbot response quality (p = .003). No significant differences were found in UEQ Efficiency (p = .058) or Dependability (p = .237). Research implications – Findings are based on a small single-institution sample (n = 15 per group), limiting generalisability. The domain-specific instrument has not yet undergone full psychometric validation. Results may not transfer uniformly across Indonesia's diverse regional and institutional contexts. Originality – This study is among the first to experimentally compare chatbot interface design variants within an Indonesian-language academic writing context and to develop a domain-specific UX instrument tailored to this setting. The findings provide empirical and actionable design guidelines for developers of Indonesian-language educational chatbots, and establish a replicable research framework for further cross-institutional and longitudinal investigation.

Abstract

Although internal factors such as motivation have increasingly received attention in language learning research, studies that specifically examine the role of prior ability (entry behavior) as a moderator in the relationship between learning motivation and learning achievement remain limited. This study aims to analyze the role of prior ability in moderating the relationship between learning motivation and Arabic language learning achievement. This study employed a quantitative correlational approach with a moderation design, involving 40 sixth-grade students of SD Islam Ar-Raafi selected through total sampling. The research process was conducted during the odd semester in November 2025. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire to measure learning motivation and score documentation for prior ability and learning achievement, and were then analyzed using Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA) with the assistance of SPSS. The results showed that learning motivation, with a mean of 85.98, and prior ability, with a mean of 87.77, were in the moderate category, whereas learning achievement, with a mean of 89.25, was classified as good. The MRA analysis proved that prior ability significantly strengthened the relationship between learning motivation and learning achievement, as indicated by a significance value of 0.007 < 0.05 and an interaction coefficient of 0.002. This study also found an anomaly in that students’ high ambition was sometimes accompanied by amotivation in the form of loss of focus in understanding the material. These findings contribute to the development of motivation theory in educational psychology while broadening understanding of language acquisition. The conclusion of this study confirms that high motivation will have an optimal impact on learning achievement when supported by strong prior ability, so teachers need to provide a review of basic material through a matriculation program. The implications of this study include theoretical contributions to the literature on prior ability in Arabic language learning and practical implications for educational institutions to facilitate enrichment programs, while also opening opportunities for further research using a qualitative approach related to factors of students’ learning confusion.

Abstract

Program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memperkuat kompetensi bahasa asing masyarakat melalui program literasi bahasa Jerman berbasis komunitas. Kegiatan dilaksanakan di Kota Makassar dengan melibatkan pelajar, mahasiswa, guru, dan komunitas belajar bahasa asing sebagai mitra utama. Permasalahan utama yang dihadapi mitra meliputi rendahnya kemampuan literasi bahasa Jerman, keterbatasan praktik komunikasi, kurang optimalnya pemanfaatan teknologi digital dan AI dalam pembelajaran, serta belum terbentuknya komunitas belajar yang berkelanjutan. Untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut, program dilaksanakan melalui metode workshop, focus group discussion (FGD), demonstrasi, praktik langsung, dan pendampingan berbasis komunitas. Materi pelatihan mencakup penguatan kosakata dan komunikasi dasar bahasa Jerman, penggunaan media digital pembelajaran, serta pemanfaatan aplikasi berbasis AI dalam pembelajaran bahasa asing. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa program berhasil meningkatkan kemampuan peserta dalam memahami kosakata dasar, melakukan percakapan sederhana, membaca teks pendek, serta menggunakan media digital untuk belajar bahasa Jerman secara mandiri. Peserta juga menunjukkan peningkatan motivasi belajar, rasa percaya diri dalam berkomunikasi, dan partisipasi aktif dalam kegiatan komunitas. Selain itu, program berhasil membentuk lingkungan belajar kolaboratif yang mendukung pengembangan literasi bahasa asing secara berkelanjutan. Pemanfaatan teknologi digital dan AI dalam pembelajaran terbukti membantu peserta memperoleh pengalaman belajar yang lebih interaktif dan fleksibel. Dengan demikian, program literasi bahasa Jerman berbasis komunitas dapat menjadi model pengabdian masyarakat yang efektif dalam meningkatkan kompetensi bahasa asing dan literasi digital masyarakat di era globalisasi.

Abstract

Perkembangan teknologi digital dan media sosial telah mengubah pola komunikasi masyarakat secara signifikan. Namun, tingginya penggunaan media digital belum sepenuhnya diimbangi dengan kemampuan literasi digital dan penggunaan bahasa Indonesia yang santun serta efektif dalam komunikasi daring. Permasalahan yang ditemukan pada masyarakat mitra meliputi rendahnya pemahaman mengenai etika komunikasi digital, penggunaan bahasa yang kurang santun di media sosial, serta minimnya kesadaran terhadap dampak sosial dari komunikasi digital. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan masyarakat dalam menggunakan bahasa Indonesia yang santun, efektif, dan bertanggung jawab dalam komunikasi digital. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan dilakukan melalui pendekatan partisipatif dengan tahapan observasi, workshop, focus group discussion, demonstrasi, praktik langsung, pendampingan, dan evaluasi kegiatan. Materi pelatihan difokuskan pada etika komunikasi digital, penggunaan bahasa Indonesia yang baik dan efektif, penyusunan pesan komunikatif, serta pencegahan ujaran kebencian dan komunikasi provokatif di media sosial. Evaluasi kegiatan dilakukan melalui observasi, pre-test dan post-test, serta penilaian praktik komunikasi digital peserta. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pemahaman dan keterampilan peserta dalam menggunakan bahasa Indonesia yang santun dalam media digital. Peserta menjadi lebih mampu menyusun pesan yang komunikatif, mengurangi penggunaan bahasa negatif, serta memahami pentingnya etika komunikasi dalam media sosial. Antusiasme peserta selama kegiatan berlangsung juga menunjukkan bahwa program pengabdian sesuai dengan kebutuhan masyarakat di era digital saat ini. Selain meningkatkan literasi digital masyarakat, kegiatan ini turut berkontribusi dalam membangun budaya komunikasi yang positif, harmonis, dan bertanggung jawab di ruang digital. Dengan demikian, program pendampingan ini memberikan dampak positif terhadap peningkatan kualitas komunikasi digital masyarakat dan dapat menjadi salah satu model penguatan literasi bahasa dan literasi digital berbasis pemberdayaan masyarakat.

Abstract

Perkembangan komunikasi digital telah mendorong penggunaan emoji tidak hanya sebagai penanda emosi, tetapi juga sebagai bagian dari pembentukan makna dalam interaksi media sosial. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan bentuk penggunaan emoji sebagai pengganti unsur sintaksis dalam komunikasi digital berbahasa Indonesia, mengidentifikasi jenis unsur sintaksis yang dapat digantikan oleh emoji, serta menjelaskan fungsi penggunaannya dalam membangun makna. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif dan rancangan analisis isi. Data berupa komentar, unggahan, dan tuturan digital yang mengandung emoji pada platform Instagram, TikTok, X, dan WhatsApp. Data dikumpulkan melalui teknik dokumentasi dengan metode simak-catat, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan model analisis interaktif yang meliputi reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan simpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa emoji memiliki fungsi yang lebih luas daripada sekadar penanda emosi. Emoji ditemukan berfungsi sebagai pengganti tuturan verbal utuh, pengganti nomina, pengganti predikat, serta pengganti frasa atau klausa. Selain itu, emoji juga berfungsi sebagai penanda nada ujaran yang membantu pembaca memahami sikap, maksud, dan tujuan komunikatif penutur. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa emoji telah mengalami perluasan fungsi dari simbol visual dan afektif menjadi sumber daya semiotik yang memiliki peran sintaktis dan pragmatis dalam komunikasi digital. Penelitian ini memperlihatkan bahwa batas antara bahasa verbal dan simbol visual semakin kabur seiring berkembangnya praktik komunikasi multimodal di media sosial. Dengan demikian, emoji dapat dipahami sebagai bagian dari sistem komunikasi digital yang berkontribusi dalam pembentukan struktur dan makna bahasa kontemporer.
