Abstract

This study examines the use of religious narratives, specifically the story of "Ibrahim, the Father of Prophets," from the bilingual collection Nabi & Rasul Allah (2018), to cultivate critical thinking among young English language learners in Indonesia. This study explores how the morals and language of a story can foster critical thinking in young students. Employing Fairclough's model of critical discourse analysis (CDA) and the transitivity framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), the research investigates the critical thinking skills embedded in the English version of the Ibrahim story. The analysis includes a discourse-based examination of the story’s strategies and social practices, supplemented by interviews with English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Indonesian religious elementary school. This integrated approach highlights the role of critical thinking in selecting appropriate learning materials and emphasizes socio-cultural contributions of religious narratives to material development and instructional design in ELT to young learners. The paper concludes that integrating moral values into English teaching does not negate the necessity of fostering critical thinking. Teachers can use critical thinking to select stories that enhance students' moral understanding and linguistic proficiency. This research contributes to ongoing discussions on the use of storytelling in education and provides insights into effective pedagogical strategies for incorporating critical thinking into ELT for young learners.

Abstract

The aim of this development is to produce a digital video learning media based on Artificial Intelligence for the intrinsic elements of short stories so that students can easily understand the material and learning is more interesting. In this development research, the development of short story learning media in the form of text into digital video was produced. The development of this learning media uses various Artificial Intelligence applications, namely ChatGBT, Google Docs, Leonardo, ElevenLabs, Capcut, and Canva. Artificial Intelligence-Based Digital Video Media with ADDIE Model for Intrinsic Elements of Short Stories has been refined based on expert validation data analysis and trial data analysis. The aspect that was improved was the development of animation by adding material explanations and adding questions according to the learning objectives placed in the close scene.Based on the results of the assessment given by material experts, design experts, and media experts on Artificial Intelligence-Based Digital Video Media with the ADDIE Model for the Intrinsic Elements of Short Stories, it is very feasible, meaning that the Development of Artificial Intelligence-Based Digital Video Media with the ADDIE Model for Intrinsic Elements of Short Stories has great potential to be applied in Indonesian learning, especially for the intrinsic elements of short stories. Based on the results of the assessment of the Artificial Intelligence-Based Digital Video Media trial with the ADDIE Model for the Intrinsic Elements of Short Stories given to Al-Islam Krian High School students, it means that this media is very feasible to be widely used in Indonesian language learning at the secondary education level.

Abstract

Writing is not a stand-alone mental activity; it is inextricably linked to other forms of creative design, such as drawing and music composition. Writing is a highly sought-after skill in today's digital world. Creative writing is defined as the fluent exchange of concepts in an original manner through the construction of logical connections between them in written form based on the individual's schema. This article discusses a study that examined factors affecting student engagement as a lens through which to examine students' perceptions of their creative writing class participation. These interactions emphasize the complexities of student engagement and promote the accuracy of the instruments and metrics used to study it. Cognitive engagement is concerned with a student's internal investment in the learning process, which includes inner psychological characteristics or nonvisible characteristics that encourage effort in acquiring, comprehending, and mastering the knowledge or skills required for academic work. As a result, English lessons were held for 12 students from Flores' private junior high school. They completed a questionnaire that included quantitative and qualitative questions. Descriptive statistics are used to examine qualitative data conceptually and statistically. The participants' experiences reflected various aspects of the students' participation. According to the findings, creative writing activities can help students learn about behavior, emotion, and cognition in a poetry class. However, in a poetry class, emotional involvement prevailed and was followed by behavioral engagement. Nonetheless, pupils maintained a low level of cognitive engagement.

Abstract

On August 31, 2021, Joe Biden announced officially the drawdown of the United States military forces from Afghanistan war indicating the end of the longest war in American history for 20 years. This study posits that Biden's speech serves as a means of political engagement not only as the announcement of a decision but also as the cultivation of a shared perspective and consciousness on the role and position of the United States and its allies in the Afghanistan war. This study aims at examining the representation of social actors in his speech using van Leeuwen's approach of critical discourse analysis (van Leeuwen, 2008). This study investigates the ways how the social actors are depicted in the speech and uncovers the underlying ideology behind their portrayal. According to the result, the dominance of inclusion strategies (84.1%) indicates various ways of portrayal the social actors either. The recontextualization of the Afghanistan war in the speech is constructed significantly by beliefs and attitudes of social actors within US sides. The speech expresses the role of the current president, US forces and government aiming at the shape of public opinion positively for the future of Americans and the latest national interest of United States Furthermore, this speech emphasizes the American foreign policy during Biden's administration about the multilateralism. Its implementation is proposing the diplomacy, specifically using non-military means to protect the human rights and build strong international collaboration. Biden's decision to end the Afghan war is a deliberate attempt to promote peace and stability in the United States by focusing on its future rather than dwelling on the past.

Abstract

This study explored the use of evaluative language in the speech of investigators and suspects during police interrogations at a district police department in Indonesia. The study aimed to analyze how interpersonal strategies were realized by the police as interrogators and suspects during interrogations. To achieve these objectives, the research applied appraisal theory within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to identify and examine the language of evaluation. The data for the study were derived from conversations between police interrogators and suspects. The analysis involved segmenting the interrogation texts into units of utterances. There were 1320 utterances of 5 suspects analyzed in this study. These utterances were then systematically categorized based on the appraisal system's categories. Specifically, the analysis focused on the appraisal system's engagement dimension, examining the realization of monoglosss and heterogloss. The findings revealed that the expression of engagement was predominantly characterized by heterogloss, primarily conveyed by the interrogator. The findings indicated that during the interrogation process, the police increased control, reduced space for the suspect's perspective, introduced bias in information gathering, and emphasized a clearer power dynamic, which can impact the validity and ethics of the interrogation. The findings contributed to forensic linguistics practice to create opportunities for more cooperative interactions, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of information elicitation.
