Abstract

The aims of this study are to (1) determine the level of mathematics anxiety (MA) of pre-service elementary school teachers, (2) compare the MA among pre-service elementary school teachers in terms of gender, and (3) compare the MA among pre-service elementary school teachers in terms of the semester. This research employed a quantitative approach with comparative research design. In addition, the samples were 498 pre-service elementary school teachers. The instrument used is the Revised-Mathematics Anxiety Survey (R-MANX) developed by Bursal and Paznokas (2006). R-MANX consists of 30 statement of a 5-point Likert scale. The data analysis was processed using one-way ANOVA assisted by SPSS version 23. The findings reveal that the MA of pre-service elementary school teachers is high. Further, it is revealed that there is no significant MA difference between male and female pre-service elementary school teachers. Also, there is no significance of MA difference among pre-service elementary school teachers who are in 2nd semester, 4th semester, and 6th semester. Therefore, the results of this research imply that MA can affect pedagogical competence of a teacher and it could have an impact on the way the teacher manages the class.

Abstract

According to some studies on school student, the application of the STAD method in some subject can improve critical thinking ability. However, according to other studies, STAD in some subject for school students cannot improve critical thinking ability. This study, hence, aims to discover the impact of the application of STAD in improving critical thinking ability, especially in mathematics course for university students. The experiment was carried out in a quasi-experimental design, especially the pretest-posttest non-equivalent group type. The findings of this study indicate that the application of STAD in mathematics learning can improve critical thinking ability. The advantages of using STAD can be seen from the increase in critical thinking ability, both abilities in the low, medium, and high categories. This study also confirms the findings of other studies that the application of cooperative and problem-based learning methods is effective in improving critical thinking ability. However, in contrast to other studies that reveal the benefits of STAD can be obtained after a long time of application (9 weeks - 8 months), this study shows that the benefits of STAD can be obtained in a relatively short time. This occurs because the treatment in the experimental class meets the criteria set by the experts, and uses three important structures proposed by experts, too. This research, therefore, has implications for the need to use problem-based cooperative learning methods.

Abstract

The low reading literacy of grade IV elementary school students is a challenge that needs to be overcome by teachers. The absence of learning media that is in accordance with the characteristics and needs of students is one of the factors causing low reading literacy in grade IV elementary school students. This study aims to analyze the needs of teachers and grade IV elementary school students for e-picture story book media. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques through teacher interviews, student needs questionnaires, and observation. The study was conducted in March 2025 with research subjects of grade IV elementary school students in Kombel 2 Kapanewon Depok, Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta. The results of the study showed that the learning media used were not yet varied. Teachers still use makeshift textbooks at school, so they are less interesting for students to read. In addition, technology-based learning media such as e-picture story book media have not been used. So teachers and students want to develop learning media according to the characteristics and learning needs of students.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze students' critical thinking well by utilizing digital literacy. The method in this study is a qualitative method. Samples were taken from 2nd semester class A students at Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. Data collection used a testing method. Critical thinking test questions function as instruments. Data analysis is the Miles & Huberman model analysis, namely qualitative data analysis, data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. Based on the research data, it can be concluded that the level of critical thinking of students is very high related to four indicators, namely interpretation, analysis, explanation and self-regulation. The conclusion and explanation indicators are included in the moderate category. This is based on the table described for the level of critical thinking of students. There are several things that an institution or university must do to maintain these capabilities in the digital era, so that students can use them wisely and benefit many audiences, such as: providing outreach regarding the proper use of social media and providing tips for avoiding hoax news, providing Montessori training to develop critical thinking skills, providing Mendeley training using qualified references.
