Abstract

Film is a mass media capable of constructing stereotypes of a culture while shaping reality according to the producer’s intent. This study aims to describe the representation of Madurese ethnic identity in the film Laundry Show (LS) by Rizki Balki. This research is qualitative descriptive, with data consisting of dialogues, character appearances, and other codes portrayed through the character Joni. The data source is the film LS produced by PT Tripar Multivision Plus. Data collection was carried out using documentation techniques, while data analysis employed John Fiske's semiotics method, consisting of three levels of representation. The results indicate that the film LS creates a new, more positive perspective on the Madurese ethnicity. At the identity level, Joni is depicted with a distinctive language style, modern naming, contextual clothing, attractive appearance, and traits such as being humorous, multi-talented, intelligent, friendly, empathetic, religious, and having a strong work ethic. At the representation level, the use of camera techniques, lighting, and music supports this portrayal. Meanwhile, at the ideological level, Joni's identity reflects values of hard work, humanism, and religiosity as representations of the Madurese ethnicity. This study confirms that films can be an effective medium for shaping new perspectives on certain cultures.

Abstract

A coursebook is one of the essential learning resources. However, limited research has highlighted the evaluation of English coursebooks for the high school level. This research intends to assess the efficacy of three high school English coursebooks under the Merdeka Curriculum to determine their strengths and weaknesses in meeting curriculum expectations and enhancing student learning. While the coursebooks are designed to aid English teaching and integrate reform, many reports have emerged regarding their usability, content relevance, and alignment with the local context. In evaluating these coursebooks with SQRAR, this research aims to analyze the suitability of these materials for the target students, the variety of exercises proposed, and the balance achieved between theoretical instruction and practical language use. The findings highlight the challenges educators and learners face regarding these materials and articulate suggestions for future coursebook revisions, such as adding more explicit teaching strategies, giving greater attention to pluralistic approaches, increasing engagement with authentic materials, and more modern technology-oriented tasks. The evaluation seeks to support ongoing efforts in developing curricula to ensure that English coursebooks can effectively foster students' learning.

Abstract

Pondok Pesantren is one of the oldest educational institutions in the archipelago that has an important role in building the nation's character. Although boarding schools have a strategic role in building the nation's character, many of them do not have a structured and adaptive human resource management (HRM) system, thus facing obstacles in maintaining the quality of education and the sustainability of the institution. This study aims to analyze the implementation of human resource management (HRM) at the Hasyim Asy'ari Islamic Boarding School in Tarub District, Tegal Regency, an Islamic educational institution combining religious and general education within the framework of modernization. The qualitative research method uses a case study approach through observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results showed that HR management in this pesantren includes several important aspects: planning, organizing, implementing, and controlling. In planning, trend analysis is used based on historical data, but it has not fully considered dynamic factors such as fluctuations in Santri enrollment. The HR organization is still limited to a formal structure, and the internal coordination system is not strengthened. Implementation stages, including recruitment, selection, orientation, training, and assessment, have been carried out but are still simple and not optimal in developing the professionalism of teaching staff. One of the main challenges is low compensation, or bisyaroh, which can affect work motivation. These findings indicate the need for a more systematic, needs-based, and oriented HRM strategy to improve the quality of teaching staff in order to produce superior Santri who are ready to face global challenges.

Abstract

Comic strips, beyond entertainment, serve as a medium for expressing public aspirations. This study explores criticism and satire of government policies perceived as unfavorable to the people. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research examines linguistic data from the Instagram account @komik.grontol, covering content from December 2024 to February 2025. Data collection was conducted through documentation techniques, and analysis followed the theory of conversational implicature and semiotics. The findings reveal various criticisms, including (a) the 12% VAT increase, (b) the construction of fences and the granting of HGB permits for Laut Tangerang, (c) the appointment of special staff amid budget efficiency efforts, (d) lenient punishments for corrupt officials, (e) the LPG sales policy that burdens the public, (f) the prohibition of students from criticizing meal quality in the MBG program, and (g) the proposal to introduce insects as a protein source in the MBG program. These findings have theoretical implications for the development of pragmatics and visual communication studies, as well as practical implications for the government to be more responsive to public criticism and for creators to convey messages in an ethical and educational manner.

Abstract

The goal of teaching English as a foreign language in Indonesia (TEFLIN), or in a wider context—teaching English as a global language (TEGL) or teaching English as an international language (TEIL), is that the students are able to authentically communicate with others using the target language in real life situations: attending lectures or seminars, having a chat via the Internet, discussing TV programmes, bargaining items in markets, etc. When the communication takes place, the four macro language skills are integratedly employed to convey and receive messages as the contents of communications. This vividly seems that language in use must have contents because language itself merely consists of symbols, grammatical rules in the forms of patterns, and skills. In TEFLIN or TEGL/TEIL, therefore, the teachers/lecturers of English should cater the students with meaningful contents appropriate for them to develop their four macro language skills in meaningful learning atmosphere. The contents encompass the target culture and students' local wisdom related to their real-life situations. The target culture is employed as meaningful input texts for receptive skills: listening and reading. The input texts are then employed to explore and elaborate on local wisdom related to the target culture for productive skills: writing and speaking. The steps proposed are as follows: 1) warming the students up with relevant situation to the topic, 2) presenting input texts about the target culture to discuss (listening or reading), 3) analysing the ways of expressing ideas used in the target language—English, 4) analysing and discussing the language elements, and 5) employing the learned ways of expressing ideas in productive skills (writing and speaking) about local wisdom related to students’ real-life situations in the target language.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of digital literacy skills and learning motivation on students' online learning outcomes in Fiqh subjects at Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs). The approach used in this study is quantitative with the data collection technique being a survey model. The sample includes 52 students, along with the corresponding teacher, from MTs Nurul Falah. The correlation data analysis is conducted using SPSS 25 software. The findings reveal a significant influence of digital literacy skills and learning motivation on online learning outcomes. Specifically, digital literacy skills account for a 90% influence on the online learning outcomes of MTs Nurul Falah students, while learning motivation accounts for an 88% influence. Moreover, the combined impact of both variables on online learning outcomes is 82%. The implications of this study underscore the necessity of enhancing digital literacy skills and nurturing learning motivation in online Fiqh courses at MTs Nurul Falah to improve students' learning outcomes. This can be accomplished through adequate training and support for students and teachers to develop digital literacy skills and learning motivation. Additionally, it is crucial to address the internal factors influencing students' digital literacy. Moreover, addressing factors such as technical issues and student motivation within the online learning environment is equally essential for optimizing online learning experiences.
