Abstract

Elementary students often experience difficulties in understanding multiplication concepts due to the abstract nature of arithmetic instruction and the limited use of engaging learning media. This research aims to design and develop the Multiplication and Division Card (MDC) Game based on the GASING (Gampang, Asyik, dan Menyenangkan) method as a game-oriented learning medium to support students’ conceptual understanding of multiplication. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using a simplified ADDIE model, consisting of needs analysis, product design, product development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The MDC Game was specifically prepared and tested for multiplication learning through a limited trial involving Phase B (Grade III) elementary students. Data were collected using expert validation instruments, teacher and student response questionnaires, classroom observations, and interviews, and were analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative methods. The results indicate that the MDC Game is feasible in terms of content accuracy, usability, and visual design, with minor revisions needed for instructional clarity. It is also considered practical and positively received by teachers and students, as it promotes active participation, collaboration, and motivation. The limited trial findings show students’ learning progression, with the mean score increasing from 46.31 (pretest) to 87.34 (posttest). In conclusion, the MDC Game demonstrates strong potential as a GASING-based learning medium for elementary multiplication instruction. Although limited to a pilot context, these findings provide preliminary evidence for further large-scale implementation and more rigorous investigation.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the extent to which the open-ended approach affects the achievement of students' mathematical understanding ability in vocational high schools (SMK). The method used was a quasi-experiment with a pretest-posttest control group design, in which two groups of students (experimental group and control group) were compared based on test results before and after treatment. The research sample consisted of 72 students who were selected by intact group (based on the class that had been formed) to minimize disruption to teaching and learning activities at school. This sampling was done by considering the real conditions in the field so as not to disrupt the existing learning schedule and class structure. The research data was obtained through a description test consisting of three questions, with a maximum score of 12 for each question. Data analysis was conducted in two stages: first, a normality test to check data distribution, and second, a mean difference test using the Mann-Whitney U test because the data were not normally distributed. The results showed that the group of students taught with the open-ended approach had better mathematical understanding achievement than the group that received direct learning. This finding indicates that the open-ended approach is effective in promoting mathematical conceptual understanding through independent exploration.

Abstract

Purpose. This study describes the mathematical critical thinking profile of fifth-grade students in a madrasah ibtidaiyah and identifies the difficulties they experience when solving open-ended mathematics tasks, an area rarely examined in non-public elementary schools.Methods. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed with 27 fifth-grade students of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Hidayatul Mubtadiin, an Islamic elementary school under the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Indonesia. Critical thinking was examined using Facione's framework covering interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, and explanation. Data were collected through an open-ended prism problem instrument validated by two mathematics education experts, followed by semi-structured interviews with the classroom teacher and nine selected students. The interactive analysis model of Miles and Huberman was used with source and method triangulation.Findings. Critical thinking developed unevenly across the five components. Evaluation and inference appeared relatively well developed, whereas interpretation consistently emerged as the weakest component across all performance levels; even high-performing students found it difficult to articulate the meaning of mathematical information. The pattern suggests that critical thinking does not automatically follow content mastery, but requires deliberately designed instructional support.Research Implications. Mathematics instruction in elementary madrasah should explicitly scaffold interpretive and analytical processes, for example by training students to restate problems, identify relevant information, and explain their reasoning before engaging in higher-order evaluation.Originality. Unlike studies that rely on public elementary schools or written-test scores alone, this study combines a validated open-ended instrument with interviews to profile critical thinking difficulties in the under-represented madrasah ibtidaiyah context.

Abstract

Mathematics is often perceived as a challenging subject by students, necessitating innovative instructional approaches that enhance conceptual understanding and contextual relevance. The ethnomathematics approach presents a valuable strategy by linking mathematical ideas to cultural practices, thus fostering more meaningful learning. This study focuses on exploring mathematical concepts embedded in the oko mama plaiting craft tradition of the Amanuban community in South Central Timor. Through a qualitative design with an ethnographic method, the research involved direct engagement with three local artisans selected purposively based on their expertise. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews, field observations, and documentation, followed by triangulation to ensure data validity. The analysis uncovered a variety of geometric concepts found in the artisans’ practices. These include two-dimensional shapes such as squares, rectangles, parallelograms, rhombuses, triangles, trapezoids, and both regular and irregular hexagons and three-dimensional forms such as cubes, rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, and hexagonal prisms. Mathematical ideas involving perimeter, area, and volume also emerged through the measurement and structuring techniques used in plaiting. The study demonstrates that local cultural practices serve not only as expressions of heritage but also as rich sources of mathematical thinking. Findings highlight the potential of the oko mama craft to serve as a contextual learning resource for geometry education. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by offering a more comprehensive ethnomathematical analysis compared to earlier studies that focused narrowly on basic geometric forms and calculations.

Abstract

Students’ difficulties in solving Systems of Linear Equations with Two Variables (SLETV) problems are often related not only to procedural understanding but also to their beliefs about knowledge and learning. This study examined differences in students’ academic performance in solving SLETV problems based on their levels of epistemological beliefs. The study used a quantitative survey design involving 70 junior high school students studying SLETV at a junior high school in South Tangerang, Indonesia. The researchers selected participants using simple random sampling from several classes taught by the same mathematics teacher. After screening, the researchers included 34 complete, valid responses in the analysis. Data were collected using the Epistemological Belief Questionnaire, which measured four dimensions of epistemological beliefs: time allocation, solution steps, conceptual understanding, and usefulness of mathematics, along with an SLETV achievement test. The data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and Tukey HSD post-hoc analysis. The results revealed significant differences in students’ academic performance based on their levels of epistemological beliefs (p < 0.05). Students with low epistemological beliefs performed significantly lower than students with moderate and high epistemological beliefs, while no significant difference was found between the moderate and high groups. The findings indicate that students with more developed epistemological beliefs were associated with better performance in solving SLETV problems, particularly compared with students with low epistemological beliefs. This study contributes to mathematics education research by providing contextual evidence regarding the role of epistemological beliefs in algebra learning. The findings indicate an association between students’ epistemological beliefs and their mathematical performance in solving SLETV problems.

Abstract

Objective: This study describes the profile of elementary students’ geometric thinking levels using the van Hiele framework. Novelty: The increasing mean scores across levels corroborate the hierarchical nature of the van Hiele model. Methods: A descriptive quantitative design was applied to a sample of 23 fifth-grade students who completed a van Hiele–based Geometry Thinking Level Test (Levels 0–4). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine score distributions and classify students by van Hiele level. Results: Total test scores ranged from 3 to 13 (mean = 8.30; median = 9.00). Of the students, 52.2% were classified at Level 1 (Analysis), 34.8% at Level 0 (Visualization), and 13.0% at Level 2 (Informal Deduction); no students reached Levels 3 or 4. Conclusion: Elementary students’ geometric mastery remains concentrated on shape recognition and basic property analysis, while formal deductive reasoning is not yet developed. The findings imply the need for a systematic, scaffolded geometry learning trajectory that progresses from strengthening visualization to activities that foster relational and deductive reasoning.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of motivation levels and interaction effects on students' Mathematical Comprehension Ability (KPM) while utilizing Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL). Employing a quasi-experimental with the 3x2 factorial design, the research was conducted with fourth-grade students in Ciamis Regency, West Java. The findings indicated that the average KPM increase for students using PBL was 53%, which is considered moderate, whereas for IBL, it was 29%, which is categorized as low. Significantly, there were variations in learning effects between PBL and IBL (p < 0.001), with PBL demonstrating a more pronounced impact on KPM improvement. However, the influence of motivation level on KPM improvement was deemed insignificant (p = 0.192), as was the interaction effect between learning methods and motivation level on KPM improvement (p = 0.057). In conclusion, the study suggests that PBL is more effective than IBL in enhancing students' KPM. At the same time, motivation level does not significantly influence KPM improvement, and there is no interaction effect between the type of learning method and motivation level on KPM improvement.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of implementing the GASING method (Fun, Easy, and Enjoyable Learning) on the mathematical thinking abilities of elementary school students. A quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest design. The participants comprised 37 fourth-grade students from a public elementary school in Biak Regency. The research instrument was a structured essay test designed to assess mathematical thinking abilities, including conceptual understanding, reasoning, problem-solving, and mathematical communication. The data were analyzed using a normality test, paired-samples t-test, and N-Gain calculation. The results showed that the mean pretest score increased from 59.0 to 82.4 on the posttest. The paired-samples t-test indicated a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05), demonstrating a significant improvement in students’ mathematical thinking abilities following the implementation of the GASING method. The N-Gain analysis indicated a moderate-to-high level of improvement. Therefore, the GASING method was found to be effective in enhancing elementary school students’ mathematical thinking abilities and can be recommended as an innovative and enjoyable alternative strategy for mathematics instruction.
