Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the use of effective questioning types on students’ critical reading skills. Motivated by the lack of student engagement in reading tasks and the difficulty students face in higher-order comprehension, this study implemented a framework of structured questions—analytical, evaluative, interpretive, inferential, and synthetic—to enhance critical reading. A pre-experimental design was employed using a one-group pre-test and post-test format. Thirty-two tenth-grade students from SMK Negeri 10 Makassar participated in the study. The findings showed a statistically significant improvement in students’ performance following the treatment. The mean score increased from 57.06 in the pre-test to 64.22 in the post-test. Score distribution also shifted notably, with 41% of students reaching the “Very Good” category and only 9% remaining in the “Requiring Guidance” classification, compared to 66% before the treatment. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test yielded a Z-value of -4.795 and a significance level of p < .001, confirming that the improvement was not due to chance. These findings suggest that effective questioning types promoted students’ higher-order thinking and engagement with texts. This study contributes to the growing body of research on reading pedagogy by addressing the gap in literature concerning the use of targeted questioning types in critical reading instruction. Future research may explore the comparative effectiveness of each questioning type and incorporate qualitative data to gain deeper insights into student responses. The implications of this study suggest that structured questioning can be a powerful tool in helping students think more deeply and critically. It shows that when students are guided with the right types of questions, they are more likely to reflect, analyze, and make meaningful connections with the texts they read. This approach could help improve the way reading is taught, especially in EFL classrooms, by encouraging more active and thoughtful learning. Keywords: effective questioning types, critical reading, higher-order thinking, EFL, reading comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to describe the financial management of the School Operational Assistance (BOS) funds using the School Activity and Budget Plan Application (ARKAS) at the junior secondary school level. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews, direct observations, and document analysis conducted in two public schools located in Majalengka Regency, West Java. The findings reveal that ARKAS significantly enhances the effectiveness, efficiency, and accountability of BOS fund management. It facilitates need-based activity planning, systematic financial documentation, and integrated reporting aligned with official regulations and monitoring mechanisms. Features such as automatic validation and user activity logs reinforce accountability, while the locking system reduces opportunities for budget manipulation. However, the study also identifies several challenges, including limited human resource readiness, insufficient ICT infrastructure in some areas, and the lack of active involvement of school committees in financial planning and evaluation processes. These limitations suggest that successful implementation of ARKAS requires not only technological tools but also continuous capacity building, improved digital literacy, and sustained technical assistance from education authorities. Therefore, ARKAS must be seen as a strategic reform instrument for strengthening school financial governance, rather than merely a technical solution. Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of game-based learning in improving students' knowledge and attitudes toward Pancasila values in Pancasila Education for third-grade students at UPTD SDN Ketapang Barat 4. The study employed a classroom action research approach using the model of Stephen Kemmis and Robin McTaggart, which includes planning, action, observation, and reflection stages conducted in two cycles. The research participants consisted of 25 students. Data were collected through summative tests to measure cognitive achievement, attitude questionnaires to assess affective aspects, and observation sheets to record student participation and interaction during learning activities. The results indicate that the success criteria were not achieved in the first cycle due to limited student participation and incomplete implementation of the learning process. After improvements in the second cycle, the class average score increased from 81.12 to 83.84, and learning mastery improved from 60% to 100%. In addition, students' positive attitudes toward Pancasila values reached 85.2%–93.0%. These findings indicate that game-based learning effectively enhances student engagement, knowledge acquisition, and attitudes in Pancasila Education .

Abstract

This study aims to determine the extent of student understanding of the personality and social competence of teachers. Personality competence is part of teacher competence that must be known by prospective teacher students. This study uses quantitative research methods with a sample of 173 PGSD students in the fourth semester. Based on the results of the study, it was found that 20% of the students did not understand the competence of teachers, especially the personality competencies that prospective teachers must possess to become teachers in the future. Personal competence is a competency that must be possessed by every teacher. Personality competencies do not just appear, but must be instilled since the teacher is still a teacher candidate at a teacher training college.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of the dehumanization of elementary school teachers’ roles in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) through the humanistic philosophical perspectives of Carl Rogers, Abraham Maslow, and Paulo Freire. Using a qualitative method based on library research and content analysis of various recent scholarly sources, the study shows that while the presence of AI in elementary education can provide efficiency, personalization, and administrative convenience, it also has the potential to weaken the quality of human relationships that form the fundamental foundation of elementary education. Forms of dehumanization in the context of elementary education can be observed in the reduction of empathetic interactions, the loss of personal touch in learning, the shift of pedagogical authority toward automated systems, and the increasing emphasis on quantitative metrics that neglect students’ emotional needs and self-actualization. From a humanistic perspective, this study emphasizes that elementary school teachers continue to play a crucial role as facilitators of authentic relationships, moral and emotional guides, and drivers of students’ critical consciousness. Therefore, the integration of AI in elementary education should be directed in a humanistic manner, ensuring that technology functions as a supportive tool to strengthen—rather than replace—the essence of humanization in modern education.
