Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of Gimkit interactive media on the learning motivation of fifth grade students in the IPAS subject of Earth Changes material. The background of this study is the low motivation of students to learn in conventional learning. The method used was quasi-experiment with Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The sample consisted of two classes, 30 students each, namely the experimental class using Gimkit and the control class using conventional methods. Data were collected through questionnaires and observations. The results showed that the implementation of learning using Gimkit was very well implemented with an average implementation of 96%. The average experimental class student learning motivation questionnaire score increased from 41.97 to 44.43. Wilcoxon and Paired T-Test tests showed significant differences before and after treatment. The Mann-Whitney U test also showed a significant difference between the two classes after treatment (Sig. = 0.003). The N-Gain test results showed an increase in motivation in the low category, namely 0.246 for the experimental class and 0.169 for the control class. However, the effect size calculation of 0.396 indicates a moderate influence. Thus, Gimkit interactive media has a positive effect on student learning motivation, although the increase is still limited by technical constraints and student adaptation to media use.

Abstract

Purpose – Teacher-centered learning models and a lack of variety limit students' opportunities to be active and think critically, affecting their concept comprehension and collaboration skills. This study aims to investigate the role of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on fifth-grade students' understanding of the human respiratory system and organs.Method – This quasi-experimental study used a Non-Equivalent Control Group Design, involving experimental and control classes of fifth-grade students from a public elementary school in Harjamukti District, Cirebon City. Data was collected using testing and non-testing methods. Test instruments used to determine students' concept understanding using pretest and posttest assessments and non-test data is collected using observation.Findings – The results showed that the implementation stages of PBL were carried out very well; both the experimental and control classes showed an increase in concept comprehension, with PBL having a more significant impact. PBL increased concept understanding with an average N-Gain of 57.7% compared to 35.2% in the control class, and increased student collaboration with a percentage of active participation of 84%. Research Implications – The implication in this study is that the PBL model runs very well so that it can significantly improve students' understanding concepts in the material of the human respiratory system and organs. Can also develop students' collaboration skills so that they are more active in class. However, it is limited by its focus on a small sample and specific material. Broader research with diverse samples and materials, or additional variables, is needed for more comprehensive conclusions.

Abstract

Despite the emphasis on higher-order thinking skills in 21st-century learning, computational thinking skills among elementary school students remain underdeveloped. Many students rely on memorization instead of understanding the logical, systematic process of solving problems, particularly in science. This is evident in their inability to break down complex problems into smaller parts, identify interrelationships between components, and develop structured, step-by-step solution strategies. This indicates a gap between future competency needs and classroom learning practices. This study aims to examine and describe the computational thinking abilities of fourth-grade students in relation to energy and its changes. The study will determine if there is a problem with students' computational thinking abilities in this context. This study employed a descriptive quantitative method with a sample of 80 students from several elementary schools. The instrument used was a written test based on computational thinking indicators, including decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithms. The results showed that students' computational thinking ability was poor because the value range was 62. Students can identify patterns and organize problem-solving steps systematically. However, they still have difficulty abstracting information and breaking down complex problems into simpler parts. These findings underscore the importance of integrating learning activities that stimulate computational thinking skills early on, particularly in elementary school science education, and of applying appropriate models to enhance students' computational thinking abilities.

Abstract

Mathematical communication skills are critical for students to effectively understand and articulate mathematical concepts, directly impacting their numeracy and academic success. This study examines the effectiveness of the RADEC (Read, Answer, Discuss, Explain, Create) instructional model in improving the mathematical communication skills of sixth-grade students. A quasi-experimental design with a quantitative approach was employed, involving 60 sixth-grade elementary students. The experimental group (n = 30; 19 males, 11 females) received instruction through the RADEC model, while the control group (n = 30; 12 males, 18 females) was taught using the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach. Data were collected using a test consisting of five open-ended descriptive questions administered as pre- and post-tests. The N-Gain score was used to assess improvement, and the Mann-Whitney U test was applied to evaluate statistical significance. The RADEC group exhibited a moderate increase in mathematical communication skills, whereas the PBL group demonstrated only a low level of improvement. Statistical analysis confirmed a significant difference between the two groups (asymp. Sig. 0.001, α = 0.05), indicating that the RADEC model was more effective. These findings suggest that the RADEC model enhances students’ mathematical communication more effectively than PBL, likely due to its emphasis on active engagement and collaborative learning. The model shows promise as a pedagogical approach and warrants further investigation regarding its impact on other mathematical competencies, including problem-solving, representation, critical thinking, and mathematical connections.

Abstract

High-order thinking skills (HOTS) are important skills that students must have to face the challenges of the 21st century. However, in reality, many elementary school students still have low HOTS skills, one of which is caused by the use of conventional learning media. This study aims to determine the effect of using learning videos on the high-order thinking skills of fourth-grade students on photosynthesis material. The method used in this study was a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group design. The sample in this study consisted of fourth-grade students in two elementary schools, namely fourth-grade Karanglayung as the control class (28 students) and fourth-grade SDN Gudang II as the experimental class (32 students). The instrument used was a high-order thinking ability test given before and after treatment. The results showed that the average pretest score of the control class was 46.71, while the experimental class was 56.91. After treatment, the average posttest score of the control class increased to 65.11, while the experimental class reached 82.50. Improvements in student abilities were seen in both groups, but the experimental class experienced a more significant increase, with an average n-gain score reaching 60% compared to 35% in the control class. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of learning videos has a positive effect on improving students' higher-order thinking skills in photosynthesis material.

Abstract

Limitations in learning media can hinder the optimization of the learning process, resulting in students not fully understanding concepts, particularly IPAS material. This study aims to test the effectiveness of interactive e-books in improving students' understanding of IPAS material, specifically related to the water cycle. A pre-experimental design with groups in a pretest-posttest format was used in this study. The study involved 30 fifth-grade students (18 boys and 12 girls) from a public elementary school in one of the sub-districts in Pamulihan. The measurement tool used was a written test to assess understanding of IPAS material on the water cycle. Data analysis involved a normality test, as the results were normal, followed by a t-test and an N-Gain test. The results of the paired t-test showed a significant difference between the pretest and posttest results (Sig. <0.05). The degree of improvement in understanding, calculated using N-Gain, was in the high category, indicating that this medium can effectively enhance students' understanding of the concept. Based on these results, the interactive electronic book on the water cycle is effective for teaching the IPAS water cycle in elementary schools.
