Abstract

Personal growth initiative (PGI) were born from positive psychology, which plays a role in the development of students and their lives. However, currently, no systematic review specifically discusses previous research on the role of PGI in students' lives and what advice is given to educational counselors regarding students' PGI. Therefore, this research aims to review a systematic review of the role of PGI in students' lives and its implications for educational counselors. The systematic review method with the systematic review and meta-analysis (PRISMA) protocol was used to collect data. Data was obtained through the Scopus database using the article title "Personal Growth Initiative" and article title, abstract, keywords "student" from 2013 to 2023. Of the total 80 articles found, 11 met the inclusion criteria and were discussed in this research. Based on a systematic review, the results show that in the student context, higher levels of PGI contribute to increased work engagement, self-control, and lower levels of smartphone addiction, psychological well-being, mental health help-seeking, well-being for international students, future life satisfaction and happiness, and post-traumatic growth. The implications for educational counselors are that they need to encourage students' PGI skills and provide specialized training to enhance PGI, such as Intentional Growth Training. This intervention will support students in developing a solid vocational identity, reducing the risk of smartphone addiction, coping with post-traumatic stress, and improving their psychological well-being. Additionally, counselors should assist international students in cultural adjustment to address acculturation challenges and enhance their overall well-being.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to evaluate the implementation of counselor accountability at MTs Negeri Kota Bogor and formulate evidence-based strategies to strengthen their professional practice. The research responds to systemic challenges in Indonesian public madrasahs, where high student-to-counselor ratios, limited facilities, and fragmented institutional support hinder effective counseling services aligned with national policy goals. Design/methods/approach – A qualitative intrinsic case study approach was employed, focusing on two key informants—a counselor and the school principal—through semi-structured interviews, direct observation, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was conducted using NVivo 12, guided by the M.E.A.S.U.R.E accountability framework (Dahir & Stone, 2003), with methodological triangulation and member checking to ensure credibility. Findings – Findings indicate that while the counselor applies systematic planning and evaluation procedures, accountability practices remain constrained by structural barriers. Notable initiatives include weekly documentation, digital-based student needs assessment, and collaborative service integration into classroom learning. However, ineffective communication with parents, insufficient training in data use, and the absence of specialized supervision impede sustainable accountability. Research implications – The findings support five actionable recommendations: (1) institutionalization of service-specific SOPs, (2) low-tech digital integration for reporting and assessment, (3) regular training in program evaluation and data utilization, (4) strengthened principal–counselor collaboration, and (5) strategic partnerships with external psychological service providers. These steps align with the goals of the Kurikulum Merdeka and Permendikbud No. 111/2014, and can inform national-scale policy refinements

Abstract

This article critically examines the origins and evolution of the term "career calling" and its relevance for school counselors. Tracing its roots from Ancient Greece to modern times, the concept of career calling has shifted from a spiritual vocation to a broader, secularized understanding, yet remains deeply tied to prosocial motivation and meaningful work. Employing the Critical Interpretive Synthesis approach, this study systematically and interpretatively analyzes the historical and social evolution of 'career calling.' By integrating comprehensive literature reviews from databases such as JSTOR, PubMed, ERIC, and Google Scholar, the methodology facilitates a nuanced exploration of how the concept has transformed, focusing on its impact on the professional role of school counselors. The evolution of the term "calling" from its traditional religious roots to a more secular interpretation highlights the broadening scope of the concept in modern contexts, reflecting shifts in Western cultural norms and values. This transformation underscores the ongoing debate among scholars about the definition of calling, with some advocating for a return to its historical, prosocial origins and others embracing its contemporary relevance to individual fulfillment and professional identity. The insights gained from this study not only expand school counselors' understanding of the profound implications of career calling, enhancing their perception of professional identity, but also provide a foundational basis for the development of instruments specifically tailored for measuring career calling among school counselors. Furthermore, these insights are instrumental in designing effective career calling development interventions, enabling school counselors to better support students in aligning their educational paths with their life's purposes.

Abstract

Autonomy can influence students to regulate themselves through thinking, feeling, behaving, acting, being responsible for the decisions made and living them with social considerations. Several existing instruments for assessing student autonomy still contain items that are not yet relevant to the needs of Indonesian students. This presents an interesting opportunity to develop and adapt them to the diverse social, cultural, institutional, and academic backgrounds of Indonesian students, as well as the dynamics of diverse student populations. This study aims to develop a scale to validate student autonomy used purposive sampling. This study was conducted in 2024, involving 378 students as participants consisting of 39 males and 339 females aged 17-23 years at Padang State University. This instrument is called the Student Autonomy Scale. This study uses a quantitative approach with 40 questions with "yes-no" formats as answer choices—data analysis using the Rasch model and Winsteps software. The results showed that the Cronbach Alpha value, which measures the interaction between people and items, was 0.68, included in the sufficient category. In addition, the item reliability of 0.99 indicates that the items in the autonomy questionnaire can be used to measure autonomy in students. The use of theory-based assessment methods, cross-cultural trials, and adaptive technology are some of the solutions proposed to improve the measurement quality. The Student Autonomy Scale developed in this study has a novelty that is specifically designed for the context of students in Indonesia with various considerations by adapting a comprehensive autonomy theory and integrating several important aspects and providing more precise, accurate, and standardized analysis in the era of disruption and the 21st century.

Abstract

Student autonomy refers to an individual's ability to manage their own learning process, make informed academic decisions, and take responsibility for their personal development. The level of autonomy can vary depending on the campus environment, learning approach, and the type of academic support provided. This study aims to describe and analyze the differences in student autonomy between Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP) and Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI). This study used a comparative, descriptive, and quantitative approach. Samples were purposively selected from students at Universitas Negeri Padang and Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia who actively attended lectures. The data collection instrument was The Autonomy Questionnaire for Students with the Guttman scale model with "yes-no" formats as answer choices that measured the dimensions of learning autonomy, decision-making, and academic responsibility. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a comparative test (t-test). The results of the analysis showed that Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia students had a higher level of autonomy than students from Universitas Negeri Padang. Most respondents from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia were in the high autonomy category, while 50.4% of respondents from Universitas Negeri Padang were in the moderate category. The t-test results revealed significant differences between the two groups of students in aspects of decision-making and independent learning management. These differences can be attributed to variations in learning approaches, the role of lecturers as facilitators, and the more supportive academic environment at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. The results of this study emphasize the importance of developing learning strategies and campus culture that can encourage student autonomy more evenly across universities.

Abstract

The increasing polarization of religious attitudes in contemporary society necessitates exploring historical and theological resources that promote moderation and balance. This article delves into Imam al-Ghazali's concept of religious counseling, aiming to understand its principles and methods that can cultivate moderate attitudes among individuals and communities. Employing a qualitative approach with a focus on literature review, this research analyzes Ghazali's seminal works, particularly Ihya' Ulum al-Din and Mizan al-'Amal, to uncover how his teachings contribute to fostering spiritual well-being, ethical behavior, and social harmony. Imam al-Ghazali's emphasis on moderation, ethical conduct, and integrating spiritual and social responsibilities significantly contribute to religious counseling in contemporary contexts. His advocacy for the middle path (wasatiyyah) offers a robust framework that addresses the pressing challenges of extremism and polarization. Ghazali's teachings encourage practitioners of religious counseling to promote balance and harmony within their communities by emphasizing ethical behavior rooted in Islamic virtues. Ghazali underscores the importance of maintaining mutual respect, tolerance, and constructive dialogue across diverse backgrounds by fostering an understanding of the interconnectedness between personal spirituality and communal welfare. This approach enriches individual spiritual well-being and enhances social cohesion by encouraging individuals to fulfill their religious obligations while actively engaging in societal improvement efforts. By mitigating the root causes of extremism through a holistic approach to counseling, Ghazali's teachings provide invaluable guidance for religious counselors seeking to effectively navigate and reduce contemporary social challenges.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationship between mentorship and growth mindset among interns, with intrinsic motivation and work engagement as mediating variables. Using a quantitative approach with a correlational explanatory design, data were collected from university students participating in internship programs through a Likert-scale questionnaire adapted from standardized instruments measuring mentorship, intrinsic motivation, work engagement, and growth mindset. Data were analyzed using the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) technique. The results indicated that mentorship had a positive and significant effect on the growth mindset of interns. Furthermore, intrinsic motivation and work engagement were found to partially mediate this relationship, implying that effective mentor support should be complemented by internal motivation and active involvement from students to optimize the development of a growth mindset. These findings highlight the importance of collaborative efforts between educational institutions and internship programs in developing comprehensive mentoring systems. Theoretically, this study contributes to the literature on educational and organizational psychology, while practically offering insights for designing internship programs that foster adaptive, resilient, and motivated future professionals.
