Abstract

The ups and downs of learner participation in learning activities at Pusat Kegiatan Belajar Masyarakat (PKBM) is not only influenced by technical factors, but is also closely related to how they interpret their learning experiences. Through the lens of Self-Determination Theory, this study explores the urgency of fulfilling basic psychological needs—namely autonomy, competence, and relatedness—to maintain and increase learning motivation. This research uses a phenomenological approach to explore the subjective experiences of three school-age learners in the Equivalency Education program, Paket C. Through in-depth interviews, it was found that environmental support for the fulfillment of learners' basic psychological needs varies greatly. The quality of social interaction in the PKBM environment proved to be key; warm, open, and consistent interpersonal support was able to encourage more authentic learning engagement. These findings underscore that PKBM is not merely an academic space, but a crucial social ecosystem in facilitating basic psychological needs, which ultimately determine learners' intrinsic motivation and perseverance in learning.

Abstract

Character education in schools plays a strategic role in shaping resilient and integrity-driven personalities to prevent the growing phenomenon of demoralization among students in the era of disruption and global value transformation. This study aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the importance of integrating character education into the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum, as well as to identify an effective conceptual model for strengthening students’ moral development. Employing a qualitative literature review method, this research examines a wide range of recent scholarly sources, including books, journals, and research reports relevant to the themes of character education and the Merdeka Curriculum. The synthesis of literature indicates that systematically integrated character education within the Merdeka Curriculum makes a significant contribution to preventing demoralization through the reinforcement of Pancasila Student Profile values. This study proposes the Integrative Model of Character Education within the Merdeka Curriculum (IM-CE2M), which consists of four key components: (1) project- and experience- based contextual learning that cultivates the values of faith, collaboration, and independence; (2) consistent habituation and self-development programs that foster moral discipline and positive habits; (3) synergistic collaboration among schools, families, and communities as the three centers of value-based education; and (4) strengthening teachers’ capacities as moral role models and primary facilitators of character-based learning. The implementation of IM-CE2M demonstrates that character education not only serves as a means of preventing demoralization but also forms the foundation for developing students who are faithful, critical, creative, and ethical embodying the ideals of the Pancasila Student Profile. Thus, integrating character education within the Merdeka Curriculum represents a transformative strategy to cultivate a young Indonesian generation with strong character, global competitiveness, and steadfast commitment to universal moral and humanitarian values.

Abstract

Although research on self-compassion has increased, there is still a lack of empirically validated self-compassion instruments that demonstrate measurement fairness across gender and cultural backgrounds in specific institutional contexts. This study aimed to develop a Self-Compassion Inventory (SCI) and examine its psychometric properties using a sample of university students from IKIP Siliwangi, Bandung. A total of 514 undergraduate students participated in the study through an online survey administered via Google Forms, consisting of 145 male students (28.2%) and 369 female students (71.8%), representing diverse cultural backgrounds, including Bali, Cirebon, Betawi, Jawa, Batak, Minangkabau, and Sunda ethnicities. The SCI was constructed based on three core dimensions of self-compassion: Self-Kindness versus Self-Judgment, Common Humanity versus Isolation, and Mindfulness versus Over-Identification. Data were analyzed using the Rasch measurement model to evaluate item fit, dimensionality, reliability, and differential item functioning (DIF) across gender and cultural groups. The findings indicate that the SCI functions as a valid, reliable, and fair instrument for assessing self-compassion among university students. Most items exhibited good model fit, and the instrument showed stable item calibration. DIF analysis revealed no significant cultural bias, while limited gender-based DIF was identified and addressed during item refinement.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the development of research on the character of empathy in the context of early childhood social-emotional development through a bibliometric approach. Data were obtained from scientific publications using the Publish or Perish application during the period 2016-2026. Bibliometric analysis was used with the help of VOS viewer software to analyze annual trends, dominant keywords, and the number of publications based on data collection on Google Scholar. Furthermore, the analysis results show differences in research publications in Indonesia from 2016 to 2026, which can be periodized as follows: 2016-2019 as a period of research focused on theory formation and instrument development, 2020-2023 as a period of contextualization and relationality, and 2024-2026 as a period focused on intervention. Furthermore, keyword mapping reveals the relationship between empathy and the social-emotional learning approach in early childhood education practices. These findings provide a comprehensive overview of scientific developments and identify opportunities for further research, particularly in the context of early childhood education in Indonesia. This study is expected to serve as a reference for researchers and practitioners in developing innovative and novel studies and practices for strengthening empathy in early childhood.

Abstract

The phenomenon of suicide in Bali shows an increasing trend that raises a socio-religious paradox amid the strong traditional structures and Hindu spirituality. Various studies confirm that depression, psychosocial pressure, low self-regulation, and loss of meaning in life contribute significantly to the emergence of suicidal ideation. This study aims to analyse the strengthening of character through the concepts of Sāstratah, Gurutah, and Swatah as Hindu psychospiritual-based preventive strategies. The study uses a qualitative approach, grounded in a literature review, through critical analysis of scriptures, Hindu theological literature, and relevant psychological and mental health studies. The results of the study show that Sāstratah lays the foundation for meaning in life by understanding humans as atman, with a dharma-and mokṣa-oriented perspective. Gurutah presents a process of inner clarification through reflective dialogue and guided yoga practices that strengthen emotional regulation and self-awareness. Swatah marks the deepest stage of internalisation, when yajña transforms from an external ritual into an internal burning of the ego, giving birth to compassion and existential resilience. The magnanimous character formed through these three paths functions as a psychospiritual fortress that strengthens the meaning of life, self-control, and resilience to pressure. The scientific contribution of this article lies in the formulation of a tiered psychospiritual model that integrates classical Hindu texts with modern psychological theory as a contextual conceptual reinterpretation for Balinese society. This study is theoretical and literature-based, thus requiring further empirical research to test the model's validity and effectiveness in measurable terms. Thus, the concepts of Sāstratah, Gurutah, and Swatah contribute as a conceptual framework for Hindu-based character education in contextual and transformative preventive efforts to reduce suicidal ideation.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the distribution of university students’ levels of self-compassion based on its psychological aspects. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach involving 144 students from guidance and counseling study program at a higher education institution. The entire population was included as reasearch participants without applying any sampling technique. Data were collected using a self compassion scale developed in the form of a likert model, which encompasses six core dimensions: self-kindness, self-judgment, common humanity, isolation, mindfulness and over=identification. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive percentage techniques to classify self-compassion levels into three categories, namely low, moderate, and high. The results indicated that, everall, most students were classified in the moderate level of self-compassion (48%), followed by those in the low category (0%) and the high category (52%). Further analysis of each dimension showed that the majority of students also fell into the moderate category, with percentage distributions exceeding 40% across all aspects. These findings suggest that studentsself commpassion has not yet developed optimally and tends to remain at a moderate level. This condition indicates the need for systematic developmental efforts oriented toward strengthening students’ psychological aspects, particularly in fostering adative self-attitudes, emotional awarness, and balanced self-evaluation. The results of this study can serve as an empirical basis for designing guidance and counseling programs aimed at enhancing self-compassion among university students.
