Abstract

BACKGROUND: Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) impairs the innate immune system including monocytes. Monocytes are divided into two subgroups depending on the expression of cluster of differentiation (CD)14 and CD16 receptors, namely CD14+CD16- and CD14+CD16+. CD14+CD16+ are proinflammatory monocytes and develop into M1 type macrophages, which contribute to foam cell production, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Therefore, it is important to determine the influence of T2D conditions on changes in monocyte subsets and whether these changes correlate with CVD risk markers.METHODS: Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) was obtained from 10 T2D subjects and 10 healthy donors. Subsequently, PBMC was incubated for 24 hours with and without 10 mL lipopolysaccharide. Flow cytometry was used to evaluate CD14 and CD16 expression, while multiplex immunoassays were applied to measure interleukin (IL)-1b and IL-10 concentrations in supernatants.RESULTS: In T2D, the percentage of CD14+CD16+ monocytes increased (p=0.07), and an increase in CD14+CD16+ monocytes more than 6.8% was linked with CVD risk markers (r=10.146, p=0.002). Meanwhile, inflammatory mediators released by monocytes shown an increase in IL-1b (p=0.041) but not in IL-10 (p=0.082) in T2D subjects. Fasting blood glucose levels were also found to be substantially linked with an increase in CD14+CD16+ monocytes (r=0.530, p=0.016).CONCLUSION: T2D patients had a higher percentage of CD14+CD16+ monocytes and IL-1b levels than healthy donors. An increase in CD14+CD16+ monocytes above 6.8% associated with CVD risk markers in T2D patients.KEYWORDS: type 2 diabetes, monocytes, CD14, CD16, cardiovaskular disease risk marker

Abstract

In item response theory, the number of response categories used in polytomous scoring has an effect on the fit of the model used. When the initial scoring model yields unsatisfactory estimates, corrections to the initial scoring model need to be made. This exploratory descriptive study used response data from Take Home Exam (THE) participants in the Statistical Methods I course organized by the Open University, Indonesia, in 2022. The stages of data analysis include coding the rater’s score; analyzing frequency; analyze the fit of the model based on graded, partial, and generalized partial credit models; analyze the characteristic response function (CRF) curve; scoring correction (rescaling); and re-analyze the fit of the model. The fit of the model is based on the chi-square test and the root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA). All model fit analyzes were performed by using R. The results revealed that scoring corrections had an effect on model fit and that the partial credit model (PCM) produced the best item parameter estimates. All results and their implications for practice and future research are discussed.

Abstract

This study examines the harmonization of tradition and modernity through the application of progressivism philosophy in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) as Islamic educational institutions adapting to global dynamics. Employing a qualitative method based on questionnaires, this research explores the perspectives of students (santri) and pesantren administrators regarding integration strategies, challenges, and the impact of progressivism implementation within the pesantren educational system. The findings reveal a high level of awareness among pesantren educational actors concerning the urgency of curriculum reform to align with contemporary demands. Nevertheless, the application of progressivism faces significant challenges, including limited technological resources, cultural resistance from surrounding communities, and insufficient readiness of educators to adopt modern teaching approaches. The integration of technology, particularly through digital applications in Qur'an memorization, has proven to be an effective instrument in bridging traditional heritage with modern demands. This study recommends strengthening educators’ capacities, developing technological infrastructure, and fostering multi-stakeholder collaboration to accelerate pesantren’s adaptation as an inclusive, adaptive, and relevant Islamic education model in the era of globalization, while preserving its traditional roots.

Abstract

According to Article 66 of the Indonesian Criminal Procedure Code, public prosecutors are authorized to summon witnesses or experts to strengthen their case against a defendant. In contrast, the defendant is under no obligation to do the same but retains the right to present witnesses or experts in their defense (Article 65). However, challenges arise when defendants must summon witnesses without the backing of pro justitia status, complicating the legitimacy of such summonses. Employing a normative legal approach, it analyzes relevant laws, doctrines, norms, and practices to address the legal inadequacies surrounding the defendant’s right to present exculpatory witnesses or experts, utilizing the Favor Defensionis (FD) doctrine to address these challenges. Key findings include the following: 1) witnesses and experts play a vital role in ensuring verdicts are based on substantive truth, thereby affirming the defendant’s right to present a defense in line with equality of arms and due process principle; 2) ambiguities regarding the pro justitia legitimacy of defendants’ summonses create hesitation among witnesses or experts, impacting their willingness to appear in court; and 3) the FD doctrine supports legal interpretations that favor the defendant to maintain judicial balance. Under this doctrine, public prosecutors should summon witnesses or experts at the request of the defendant or the judge, with judges authorized to order such actions. This approach enables judges’ active judicial participation while preserving defendant’s right to independently call witnesses or experts to support their defense.

Abstract

This paper presents a pair of portable wireless nodes for a smart agricultural system to control and monitor the agricultural parameters based on Internet of Things (IoT). This system utilizes low-cost wireless communication through an nRF24L01 module between the sensor node and the controller node. The sensor node is placed on the agricultural area with a Li-Ion battery as a power supply, while the controller node is placed at the control and monitoring station. On the sensor node, there is a YL-69 soil moisture sensor and DS18B20 temperature sensor, while in the controller node there is a relay that can set watering on/off condition. In the controller node, there is also an ESP8266 WiFi module that serves to send data to the internet cloud for user monitoring. Both hardware nodes are built in small and portable size. The experimental result shows that the sensor node can transmit soil moisture and temperature data via RF wireless communication to the controller node. Watering is done automatically based on the condition of sensor values. In addition, this system can also be monitored through a website interface, so the users can easily find out the condition of their plant as long as there is internet access.

Abstract

This study proposes a control method for servo motor position using a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller with particle swarm optimization (PSO). We use an AX-12 servo motor that is commonly used for robotic manipulator applications. The angular position of the servo motor will be controlled using the PID control method with PSO as a controller gain optimizer. Firstly, the transfer function model of the servo motor is generated using open-loop model identification. Then, the integral error of the closed-loop system is used as PSO input in producing PID controller gain. As an objective function of the PSO algorithm, the integral time absolute error (ITAE) index performance is used. The proposed controller was tested and compared with PID with the Ziegler-Nichols (ZN) method. We also conduct the hardware experiment using Arduino Uno as a microcontroller using one AX-12 servo motor on the base joint of the manipulator robot. Based on the simulation result, the PID-PSO controller can achieve the best control response performance if compared to PID-ZN with a rise time is less than 0.5 s, a settling time of fewer than 8 s, and an overshoot under 1.2%. The effectiveness of the proposed PID-PSO controller is also validated by hardware experimental results.

Abstract

Motile Aeromonas Septicemia (MAS) disease caused by Aeromonas hydrophila is a common pathogen that attacks freshwater fish commodities, including triploid as the new strain of striped catfish. This study aimed to test the resistance of triploid striped catfish to MAS infection before being released to farmers as a new commodity to increase national striped catfish production. The test was carried out for two months at the Sukamandi Fish Breeding Research Institute, Subang by injecting A. hydrophila into triploid and diploid striped catfish. The challenge test was carried out by injecting the cultured A. hydrophila with a density of 107 cfu.mL-1 as much as 0.1 mL.ind-1 at fish intramuscularly in all treatments, while in the Control (-) treatment, 0.1 mL of PBS solution was injected.tail-1. The test striped catfish used for each treatment were 10 individuals measuring 9.23 – 9.65 cm, and weighing 7.1 – 9.23 g. Survival parameter data and blood description were analyzed quantitatively using Microsoft Excel 2010 and SPSS version 16.0 software with analysis of variance (ANOVA) at a 95% confidence interval. The results of re-characterization with biochemical tests showed that A. hydrophila were gram-negative, oxidase and catalase positive, motile, could fermentatively convert sugar, and could grow in blood media. The survival of triploid striped catfish after the test was 95%, total erythrocytes on day 7, and total leukocytes on the first day were significantly different from diploid striped catfish. Thus, it can be concluded that striped triploid striped catfish are more resistant to infection with A. hydrophila than diploid.
