Abstract

This study aims to analyze junior high school students’ critical thinking skills and sustainability awareness as a basis for developing a Project-Based Learning (PBL) e-module on Siak River pollution. A mixed-methods descriptive design was employed involving 100 eighth-grade students from four schools in the Siak region. Quantitative data were collected using a critical thinking test and a sustainability awareness questionnaire, while qualitative data were obtained through classroom observations and teacher interviews. The results show that students’ critical thinking skills are low, with an average score of 40, particularly in evaluating and judging. Similarly, sustainability awareness is also low, with an average score of 39, especially in integrating sustainability values into daily behavior. Qualitative findings indicate that learning is still dominated by textbook-based and teacher-centered approaches, with limited integration of local environmental issues and minimal implementation of PBL. These findings suggest a gap between expected competencies and current practices. Therefore, the development of a PBL-based e-module integrating Siak River pollution is recommended to enhance students’ critical thinking and sustainability awareness through contextual and meaningful learning

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to map the development of scientific literacy research within the field of science education by examining publication trends, influential contributors, thematic structures, and collaboration patterns based on Scopus-indexed literature published between 2016 and 2025. Methodology: A bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Scopus database. Relevant journal and review articles were retrieved using the keywords “scientific literacy” and “science education.” Bibliographic data were analyzed and visualized using the Bibliometrix package (R software) to examine publication growth, source impact, thematic evolution, and collaboration networks. Main Findings: The results reveal a steady increase in research output on scientific literacy in science education over the past decade, with contributions concentrated among a limited number of authors, journals, institutions, and countries. Core research themes include scientific literacy, science education, and nature of science, while emerging topics such as misinformation, climate literacy, digital literacy, and citizenship have gained prominence in recent years. Collaboration patterns indicate stable yet selective networks at both author and country levels. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides a comprehensive decade-long bibliometric mapping that integrates trends, contributor impact, thematic structures, and collaboration patterns in scientific literacy research within science education. The findings offer an updated multidimensional overview of the field, support clearer positioning of future research agendas, and highlight underexplored themes and opportunities for broader international collaboration.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The research objective is to provide essential insights into students' self-regulation characteristics in border regions, which can inform strategic efforts to maintain and improve their capabilities as they navigate the challenges of the digital era. Methodology: This study used quantitative research with descriptive data analysis involving 198 students from three junior high schools in Nunukan Regency. Data was collected using a self-regulation questionnaire with a Likert scale, which measured four indicators: forethought, volitional control, motivation, and self-reflection. The data was then analyzed using score and average calculations to assess the students' self-regulation profile. Main Findings: The study findings reveal that the self-regulation profile of junior high school students in Nunukan Regency is generally in the high category, with an average of 77%. The motivation indicator reached the highest level at 81%, while volitional control was the lowest at 72%. Notably, differences in self-regulation levels were observed across the participating schools and grade levels. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the self-regulation characteristics of students in the border area of Nunukan Regency, which can serve as a basis for developing more effective learning strategies and improving the quality of education in similar contexts. The findings offer valuable insights that can inform the development of targeted interventions and support systems to cater to the specific needs of learners in border regions as they navigate the challenges of the digital era.

Abstract

Human Resources (HR) must have the 4Cs (communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity) to be educated in the 21st century. Initial research shows that students' ability to collaborate and think critically still needs to be improved. This research aims to determine the use of PBL-Google Sites learning media to improve critical thinking skills and review students' collaboration skills. The research method uses pre-experiment with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research sample comprised 63 students in classes 7A and 7B of SMP Negeri 11 Yogyakarta. The instruments used are tests and non-tests. The test instrument uses pretest and posttest critical thinking skills. The non-test instrument uses observation of collaboration skills. The data analysis results show the influence of using Google Sites PBL learning media on students' critical thinking abilities. Judging from the results of the Wilcoxon test, the Sig (2-tailed) value is <0.05, namely 0.000, and there is an effect size value of -0.616, which shows that the magnitude of the effect is in a large category. Students' collaborative skills obtained an average score of 75.14, which is in the good category. Based on the results of data analysis, the Google Sites PBL model learning media can improve students’ critical thinking skills and determine students' collaboration skills.
