Abstract

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive respiratory disorder characterized by persistent airflow limitation and dyspnea that significantly reduces patients’ functional capacity and quality of life. Non-pharmacological nursing interventions, including breathing techniques and therapeutic positioning, have increasingly been applied to improve respiratory function and alleviate dyspnea symptoms. However, evidence regarding the combined effectiveness of orthopneic positioning and pursed-lip breathing in clinical inpatient settings remains limited. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of orthopneic position combined with pursed-lip breathing on dyspnea indicators, including respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and peak expiratory flow, among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Methods: A pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted in the MDR Baji Ati ward, Labuang Baji General Hospital Makassar. Seventeen hospitalized adult COPD patients meeting inclusion criteria participated in the study. The intervention consisted of orthopneic positioning combined with pursed-lip breathing exercises administered for 20–30 minutes per session, at least three times weekly for four weeks. Outcome measures included respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and peak expiratory flow assessed before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using paired t-test with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The intervention significantly reduced respiratory rate from 23.4 to 18.9 breaths per minute (p = 0.001), increased oxygen saturation from 89.6% to 96.4% (p = 0.001), and improved peak expiratory flow from 256 L/min to 367 L/min (p = 0.001). Large effect sizes across outcomes indicated substantial clinical improvement. No adverse events were reported during the intervention period. Conclusion: The combined application of orthopneic positioning and pursed-lip breathing effectively improved respiratory parameters and reduced dyspnea among COPD patients. This evidence-based nursing intervention represents a safe, feasible, and clinically valuable strategy for respiratory symptom management in hospitalized patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of flexible work arrangements on innovation and sustainable growth in companies. Flexible working hours allow employees to set their own schedules and decide where and when they work most effectively. This allows them to spend more time at home or in the lab. Detaching the office helps increase productivity, creativity, and employee happiness. However, flexible office models and innovative product breakthroughs have become successful models, leading to success for their practitioners in every way. This study employed a mixed-methods approach, using questionnaires to collect data from 400 organizations across various industries. We also interviewed top managers in five cases. The results show that organizations that adopt flexible work significantly improve their ability to innovate. In technology, financial services, and manufacturing, organizations that work on innovative projects with at least one employee have shortened the overall time to market for new products while launching more successful products. Furthermore, improving employee quality of life is associated with higher levels of employee satisfaction, as employees enjoy their work more, which is beneficial for all parties involved. Furthermore, cyber leadership and digital collaboration technologies are key tools for the success of flexible work arrangements. The results of this study show that in terms of helping companies survive and thrive, adaptive work patterns are not only beneficial but also provide a competitive advantage for our organization over others in an already crowded market.

Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (IRE) plays a strategic role in shaping students’ Islamic understanding and Islamic character, particularly in integrated Islamic schools. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Islamic Religious Education program in developing students’ Islamic understanding at SMPIT As-Sunnah Makassar. The research employs a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews with the school principal, IRE teachers, students, and parents, as well as document analysis. Data analysis was conducted inductively through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, with triangulation techniques used to ensure data validity. The findings indicate that the IRE program at SMPIT As-Sunnah Makassar is holistically designed by integrating the national curriculum and diniyyah curriculum, and is implemented through intrakurikuler learning and non-formal Islamic character development activities. The program has proven effective in enhancing students’ Islamic understanding across cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains, as reflected in increased religious knowledge, worship skills, and the development of Islamic morals and character. Nevertheless, further optimization is needed in terms of documenting student development and utilizing evaluation technologies. This study is expected to serve as a reference for the development and improvement of the quality of Islamic Religious Education programs in integrated Islamic schools.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: Many Master’s students in English Language Education struggle to achieve the minimum TOEFL score. However, limited research has explored how gender influences their understanding of idioms. This study examined: (1) students’ idiomatic understanding by gender; (2) gender effects on idiom comprehension; (3) causes of difficulty; and (4) learning strategies used. Methodology: A mixed-methods design involving 212 English Master’s students. Data were collected with tests, questionnaires, and interviews. Descriptive statistics were used to assess students’ idiom comprehension levels, and the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation was used to assess the relationship between idiom comprehension and other variables. For stages of qualitative analysis - data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing – were applied. Main Findings: The study reveals a medium level of idiomatic competence and no significant gender effect—challenging prevailing assumptions of gendered pragmatic advantages. Key difficulties include limited exposure to authentic input, unfamiliarity with figurative meaning, infrequent reading, and forgetfulness. Students rely on strategies such as reading idiom materials, using dictionaries, making contextual inferences, and using multimedia. Novelty/Originality of this study: The main challenges stem from limited exposure, literal interpretation, and insufficient cultural and contextual knowledge. Nevertheless, students demonstrated learner autonomy by employing diverse strategies such as using idiom dictionaries, engaging with authentic media, and contextual guessing. The study offers ‘novel’ insights for integrating idiomatic instruction to enhance postgraduate pragmatic competence and TOEFL outcomes.
