Abstract

This study examines the role and function of Islamic counseling in fostering students’ moral character across state Islamic senior high schools (MAN) in Padangsidimpuan. Using a qualitative multisite design, the research investigates how Islamic counseling practices integrated with the roles of PAI (Islamic Education) teachers contribute to strengthening students’ religious values and behavioral discipline. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation across two MAN institutions, revealing that counseling interventions grounded in Qur’anic principles, prophetic character, and spiritual development effectively address contemporary moral challenges faced by adolescents in the digital era. The findings highlight that collaboration between BK (Guidance and Counseling) teachers and PAI teachers plays a crucial role in creating a supportive environment for moral cultivation, particularly in mitigating issues such as declining discipline, digital addiction, and weakening religious awareness. The study concludes that Islamic counseling provides a holistic framework for character formation, integrating cognitive, affective, and behavioral domains. Strengthening professional competence among counselors and enhancing school-based religious programs are recommended to ensure sustainable character development in madrasah settings.

Abstract

This study analyzes the implementation of Al-Qur'an memorization aas a means of cleansing the soul (tazkiyah an-nafs) from an Islamic counseling perspective in two Islamic junior high schools in Deli Serdang Regency: Al-Azhar Asy-Syarif Islamic Junior High School and Bintang Islamic Junior High School. Using a qualitative, phenomenological approach, the study involved the principal, the memorization teacher, the guidance counselor, the homeroom teacher, and the students as informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of the study show: (1) The planning of the tahfidz program in both schools is oriented towards memorization as well as cleansing the students' souls in the context of Islamic counseling; (2) Implementation focuses on the integration of spiritual values ​​through the talaqqi method and independent learning; (3) Evaluation includes cognitive, affective, and spiritual aspects through monthly tasmi', tasmi' akbar, and jilsat itqon; (4) Obstacles include differences in students' cognitive abilities, heterogeneous educational backgrounds, and limited learning time; (5) The program's advantages are seen in the improvement of students' noble morals, discipline, and peace of mind. This research provides theoretical and practical contributions to the development of a holistic and meaningful tahfidz learning model within modern Islamic education. Abstract

Professionalism among Guidance and Counseling lecturers plays a vital role in improving the quality of higher education and fulfilling the Tri Dharma of Higher Education—teaching, research, and community service. While teacher professionalism has been widely discussed, limited attention has been given to its development within Islamic higher education, where academic competence is closely intertwined with moral and social values. This study examines the readiness and professional development strategies of Guidance and Counseling lecturers at Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) Langsa in Aceh, Indonesia. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, the research explores lecturers’ lived experiences in shaping professional identity and practice. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis involving ten purposively selected informants, including institutional leaders, lecturers, staff, and students. Data were analyzed through stages of collection, condensation, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that lecturer professionalism is constructed through three interconnected dimensions: disciplinary alignment in teaching, adaptive integration of digital technology, and sustained engagement in research and community service grounded in counseling ethics. The study concludes that professionalism in Islamic higher education extends beyond technical competence to include ethical commitment and contextual responsiveness, highlighting the need for integrated institutional support for sustainable professional development.

Abstract

This community service article reports on the implementation of Quranic learning management for the general community through a Thematic Community Service Programme (KKNT) conducted by students of the Sekolah Tinggi Agama Islam (STAI) As-Sunnah, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, in collaboration with the community of Muara Lembu Village, Singingi Sub-district, Kuantan Singingi Regency, Riau Province, from 3 to 18 March 2025. The programme involved child learners aged 5 to 14 years, utilising the Community Based Research (CBR) method with a participatory action research framework. The objectives were: to inspire learners to love the Quran; to establish Quranic recitation improvement groups (tahsin); and to form memorisation groups (tahfiz) for seven selected surahs of Juz 30. Following two structured cycles of learning, approximately 95 per cent of learners successfully memorised seven surahs — Al-Dhuha (93), Al-Tin (95), Al-ʿAlaq (96), Al-Qadr (97), Al-Bayyinah (98), Al-Zalzalah (99), and Al-ʿAdiyat (100) — and demonstrated correct recitation in accordance with the rules of tajwid. The findings affirm that a structured, motivation-centred learning management approach, grounded in Islamic educational principles and community collaboration, yields measurable outcomes in Quranic literacy at the grassroots level.

Abstract

Thinking is an activity that cannot be separated from humans, as well as being the most substantial differentiator between humans and other creatures. This study aimed to analyze thinking and problem-solving in Islamic education. From this research, it is hoped that a concept will be born that can be used to solve the problems of Islamic education. The focus of this study discusses the thought process, problem-solving and the factors that influence it as well as the steps of problem-solving. This focus will be fully directed in the context of Islamic education. This research uses literature study techniques using primary sources in the form of authoritative books and journals. The results of this study showed that in the context of Islamic education, it was well realized that there were many problems that cause the lagging of Islamic educational institutions. It was very important to think of the right way to get out of the problem immediately by using the right problem-solving principle. In addition, the managers of educational institutions must work together and seriously implement the principles of Islamic teachings as a solution to answer these problems.
