Abstract

In the last decade, augmented reality has been one type of virtual reality technology. AR can be applied to mobile learning, improving efficiency and effectiveness in education, even for learning mathematics. The study aims to analyze and describe comprehensively the effect of experiential learning and direct instruction assisted by augmented reality on the acquisition and improvement of students' mathematical reasoning abilities. This research uses quantitative methods with a quasi-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest design and a pretest-posttest control group design. The sample in this study consisted of 50 students in the eighth grade at one of the secondary schools in Bandung, Indonesia. The instrument in this study is a set of mathematical reasoning ability tests. The results of this study concluded that 1) Based on the standard of the deviation, the descriptive spread of scores for achieving mathematical reasoning abilities of students learning with experiential learning assisted by augmented reality (more widespread); 2) Cohen's d value on the output paired samples effect sizes was 14.003 with a point estimate of (large) so the value of the effects sizes obtained shows that the implementation of experiential learning assisted augmented reality has a major effect on the acquisition of mathematical reasoning abilities; 3) The mean achievement of mathematical reasoning abilities of students studying with experiential learning assisted by augmented reality was 60.38 relatively lower than the mean achieving mathematics reasoning abilities of students who studied with directed instructions assisted by augmented reality, 70.33; 4) The effect size value shown by the value is -3.50, and this value is less than 0.2, so based on Cohen's d criterion, then the effect of experiential learning assisted by augmented reality on the acquisition of mathematical reasoning abilities students are in the small category. The findings combine experiential learning and directed instructions assisted by augmented reality, influencing students' reasoning ability mathematically.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of motivation levels and interaction effects on students' Mathematical Comprehension Ability (KPM) while utilizing Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL). Employing a quasi-experimental with the 3x2 factorial design, the research was conducted with fourth-grade students in Ciamis Regency, West Java. The findings indicated that the average KPM increase for students using PBL was 53%, which is considered moderate, whereas for IBL, it was 29%, which is categorized as low. Significantly, there were variations in learning effects between PBL and IBL (p < 0.001), with PBL demonstrating a more pronounced impact on KPM improvement. However, the influence of motivation level on KPM improvement was deemed insignificant (p = 0.192), as was the interaction effect between learning methods and motivation level on KPM improvement (p = 0.057). In conclusion, the study suggests that PBL is more effective than IBL in enhancing students' KPM. At the same time, motivation level does not significantly influence KPM improvement, and there is no interaction effect between the type of learning method and motivation level on KPM improvement.

Abstract

After the COVID-19 pandemic, many organizations asked employees to return to conventional work arrangements. However, the worsening air quality in DKI Jakarta led the government to implement a work from home policy for civil servants. Concerns have arisen about the performance of civil servants if work from home a form of flexible working arrangement, is implemented permanently. Thus, this research is performed to investigate the influence of flexible working arrangement on performance, incorporating technostress as an independent variable and supervisor support as a moderating variable. Using a quantitative method, 507 civil servants in DKI Jakarta who experienced flexible working arrangement for at least six months participated in the study. Data were collected via an online questionnaire and analyzed using multiple regression and moderation regression methods. The results revealed that flexible working arrangement positively and significantly influences employee performance. Technostress negatively and significantly affects performance. Supervisor support strengthens the positive impact of flexible working arrangement on performance, but its moderating effect on technostress is non-significant. Thus, while flexible working arrangement improves performance, and technostress hinders it, the negative impact of technostress can be mitigated by supervisor support, reducing its significance. This research underscores the importance of balancing flexible work arrangements with adequate supervisor support to enhance civil servants' performance.

Abstract

Understanding of fractions is difficult for Indonesian students. This often leads to misinterpretation in solving fractional problems. In this study, a task aiming at identifying students’ struggles in understanding the basic concept of part-whole relationships in fractions was developed and tested with six 4th-grade students. The task uses Indonesian sweet food, martabak, that has a rounded pizza-like shape as a context in which one slice was missing. Realistic Mathematics Education underlies the context designed, that was also inspired by the Dutch textbook Alles telt Q Basiswerkschrift. The study used a qualitative methodology through an interview, observation, and written test. The result of this study indicated that the students’ struggles can be identified as follows: making references to the whole, making references to the complete partition, and making sense of the incomplete partition. The study showed that the designed tasks have potentials to provoke students' reasoning in learning fractions. The findings indicate that when students learn fractions, their understanding of the meaning of fractions should be well addressed with problems that challenge this part-whole relationship. Challenging this relationship can be supported with problems that have some ambiguity about what is the ‘whole’ using the missing part context.

Abstract

Hybrid learning implementation is closely related with technology. In designing hybrid lessons, lecturers need to have both the pedagogical and content-related skills that make the best use of technology so that it also improves the students’ skills, including their computational thinking skills. The purpose of this research is to examine whether a hybrid learning model based on Technology Pedagogy and Content Knowledge (TPACK) affects the computational thinking skills achievement in a valid, practical, and effective manner. This research is development research using the Plomp’s model and is described in a qualitative descriptive manner. The participants were lecturers and 38 first-year students at Primary School Teacher Education Study Program of Padang State University. The instruments were validation sheets, practicality assessment sheets by lecturers, questionnaire sheets for students, and computational thinking skills test questions. The results of the validity test show that in terms of content, language, and e-learning practice, they all met very valid criteria with an average percentage score of 85.9%, 86.2%, and 84.1%, respectively. The practicality test results of model handbooks, Semester Lesson Plans, Lecture Program Units, computational thinking questions, additional material, and e-learning model meet the practical criteria with an average percentage score of 77.5%, 86.8%, 89.1%, 83.8%, 79%, and 82.4%, respectively. The average percentage of student assessment scores is 82.9% and meets the practical criteria. The results of the effectiveness test showed that 21.9% of students had reached the moderate level, 6.3% reached the low level, and 71.9% reached the very low level. This study recommends future researchers to develop a hybrid learning model based on TPACK to achieve other 21st-century abilities.

Abstract

Some countries, including Indonesia, have a framework for understanding how students receive and process math concepts as new knowledge through learning styles. Learning style, particularly Kolb's model, is one of the learning styles that contribute to students' success in learning. Experts have explored the characteristics of Kolb's learning style and found many effects on student learning outcomes as a starting point in learning mathematical concepts. However, the research still focuses on exploring integer operation materials in specific math abilities. The researchers hardly found any discourse to study, such as exploring number patterns in computational thinking and semiotic mathematics. Therefore, this study aims to explore mathematical semiotics and computational thinking on number patterns in terms of Kolb's learning style model. This research uses hermeneutic phenomenology to explore through written tests and interviews. An explanation of the components, characteristics, and semiotic characteristics of mathematical and computational thinking seen in students who have the Kolb model of learning in solving problems of number patterns is part of the interpretation. These findings can be used as benchmarks in developing mathematics materials. Thus, this knowledge is a concrete foundation to guide future advances in curriculum, assessment methods, and learning approaches in mathematics education, particularly in algebra.

Abstract

At the end of the sixties of last century, the development of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) started in the Netherlands. At the beginning of this century, the Indonesian adaptation of RME, Pendidikan Matematika Realistik Indonesia (PMRI), started. The implementation of RME / PMRI has proven to be challenging. In this research, a qualitative case study was used to investigate teachers’ perceptions and experiences in implementing RME/PMRI in their classes. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with several Dutch and Indonesian teachers who have joined the RME/PMRI training. We found similarities and differences between the two groups of teachers. Both groups of teachers understand the use of context as a starting point for students to construct mathematical understanding. The Dutch teachers considered the construction of interesting mathematical problems and the use of the guided-reinvention principle as the difficulties but motivated them to do more practice. Indonesian teachers mentioned that for them, the integration of mathematics with other subject areas for integrated thematic learning in the 2013 curriculum was their constraint but it was also a challenge for them to be more creative. These perspectives can become a reference for the development of a localized implementation of learning trajectory in classroom practices. DOI: https://doi.org/10.22342/jpm.17.1.20097.103-120
