Abstract

A pesantren (Islamic boarding school) as an Islamic educational institution based on self-financing system has implemented waqf as a pillar of its development and become a potential waqf asset development. The productive waqf is considered as a key instrument for providing funds to actualizing its educational program. Since both productive waqf and pesantren emphasize sustainability, and since productive waqf can assist to support the process of education in pesantren, the study aims to investigate an integrated Islamic social and commercial economy model applicable in pesantren. This will ensure utilization of the combined resources of productive waqf and pesantren in promoting pesantren welfare. The study focuses on 263 operational chief, assatidz or teacher, musyrif, musyrifah or santri companion and santri or students in Pesantren in Java and Sumatra using. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) adopted to examine the relationship among the five constructs i.e., productive waqf, business unit, project financing, human resource and pesantren welfare. While the reliability and validity are established, the structural relationship between the constructs reveals that the integrated model has a strong relationship with the pesantren welfare in many ways. In relation with business unit and profitable commercial activities, human resources have its significant role to assist pesantren tries its level best to realize developed productive waqf. Specifically, the result shows all five constructs have significant impact in promoting pesantren welfare, which suggests that the model as well as the instrument should be further implemented in pesantren.

Abstract

This paper proposes a theoretical model of endogenous Islamic money and empirically analyses the endogeneity of Islamic money supply under fiat and fractional reserve systems. The causal relations between Islamic money and macro and financial variables are assessed using the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model and error-correction modelling (ECM). The results suggest that the greater the maturity and the larger the asset share in the Islamic financial system, the better the endogeneity of money. They also reveal that the profit and loss sharing system can connect the economy to money, minimise the exogenous potential of the fractional reserve requirement system, and eliminate the exogenous feature of the fiat money system. Accordingly, the study argues that an Islamic endogenous money system can be developed in fiat and fractional reserve banking systems.

Abstract

A great summarization on multi-document with similar topics can help users to get useful information. A good summary must have an extensive coverage, minimum redundancy (high diversity), and smooth connection among sentences (high coherence). Therefore, multi-document summarization that considers the coverage, diversity, and coherence of summary is needed. In this paper we propose a novel method on multi-document summarization that optimizes the coverage, diversity, and coherence among the summary's sentences simultaneously. It integrates self-adaptive differential evolution (SaDE) algorithm to solve the optimization problem. Sentences ordering algorithm based on topical closeness approach is performed in SaDE iterations to improve coherences among the summary's sentences. Experiments have been performed on Text Analysis Conference (TAC) 2008 data sets. The experimental results showed that the proposed method generates summaries with average coherence and ROUGE scores 29-41.2 times and 46.97-64.71% better than any other method that only consider coverage and diversity, re-spectively.

Abstract

This paper aims at exploring the values which become the basis for management practice at Gontor. The preliminary observation finds that Gontor management does not follow the mainstream management theory. It has a unique management system, and oftentimes been considered to be not standard. However, Gontor exists and gradually develops with its own unique management system. The study suggests that Gontor has its own standards which are mainly based on Islamic values. Indeed, there are a lot of values, but basically they can be simplified into the five spirits of Pondok Pesantren namely sincerity, simplicity, self reliance, Islamic brotherhood, and freedom. Each one of these spirits becomes a standard of excellence for Gontor management. Hence, vision, long term plans, organization, leadership style, and controlling are designed and practiced based on them. Finally, this paper argues that the sustainability of Gontor depends on how well the management implements these five spirits into practice. In other words, Gontor will always exist and continue to flourish and prosper if it maintains these spirits and will deteriorate by the erosion of them. Abstract

Abstract

In nowadays financial and monetary system, the crisis frequently occurs and becomes a part of its internal system. It indicates the fragility of financial and monetary conventional system and becomes the stimulant of a better system, namely Islamic financial and monetary system. The development of Islamic financial and monetary system demands a rapid innovation, but it should not go beyond the authenticity of Islamic system. Without innovation, the Islamic financial and monetary system will always be left behind, but without based on authenticity it will bring Islamic label on conventional system. This paper tries to discuss about the behavior of Islamic money demand, especially the state of velocity of money. The state of velocity of money is highly depended on to the ongoing money and financial concept. This paper shows that the preservation of authenticity in developing innovations in Islamic money and financial system will usher to the constant velocity of money. Otherwise, it can be concluded that the innovation of Islamic financial and money system without keeping authenticity of Islamic system can produce a different velocity state of money. Some empirical researches confirmed both results namely constant velocity so that monetary policy by targeting money supply can become effective, and there are some empiric researchers found a different result. Based on this, the development of innovations in Islamic financial and money system must be followed by the preservation of Islamic authenticity system. It demands the development of Islamic financial and money system theories which are free form any business motive intervention. Therefore, Islamic University is the most appropriate place to take the intellectual role by conducting researches and teaching the Islamic financial and monetary system.

Abstract

Recent monetary crises have brought back the interest of scholars especially Muslim scholars to re-evaluate the current fiat monetary system. A group of Muslim economists believe that the source of problems is a form of fiat money. However, a larger group of Muslim economists prefer to set fiat money according to the rules of Sharia. This paper attempts to discuss the opinion of these two groups, so then offers the concept of money in Islam. The first group argue that the fiat money creates a seigniorage which is the cause of inflation, inequity of wealth distribution and monetary and financial crisis. Fiat money is also the soul of banking fractional reserve system which leads to the problem of inflation, business cycles and injustice distribution of wealth. Lastly, fiat money sytem with interest result in an inflationary economy. Besides these three, there is a belief that the money according to Islam must be commodity money. The second group counter that the strict rules for monetary management is proved to minimize the use of seigniorage so that inflation can be controlled. In fact, the fiat money and fractional reserve system support economic expansion so that the community can enjoy the economic growth. Furthermore, the business cycle is not just happening on a fiat money system but also a part of the commodity money system. Indeed, money in Islam must be a commodity is not agreed by the majority of fiqh scholars. However, in the context of international currency, the issue of injustice and the causes of the crisis becomes challenging issue. The first group propose to change international currency to commodity money, while the second group offers a monetary union as in the case of Europe. Finally, the concept of money is not about the form of money, but rather whether the money can be a just medium of exchange and measure of value for the goods and services.
