Abstract

This qualitative study explores students' perceptions of gamification, a strategy incorporating game-like elements into education, to understand its impact on contemporary learning. The objective is to assess whether students view gamification as a positive or negative tool for learning in the classroom. Five students with prior experience using gamification participated in the study, selected through purposive sampling. The primary method of data collection was in-depth interviews. Findings indicate that students generally perceive gamification positively. Benefits noted include increased enjoyment and interactivity in learning, enhanced motivation and competitive spirit, and the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. However, the study also identifies several challenges associated with gamification, namely technical and accessibility issues, potential reduction in personal interaction, an overemphasis on competition, and distractions from educational objectives.

Abstract

This research aims to find out what is their correlation and positive influence between English ability and employee’s performance in the workplace. This research uses a quantitative, type of correlational research to find whether or not there is a correlation and, if there is, how close the correlation is, and whether it means or does not. The data obtained is then processed using statistical analysis which uses SPSS. Data collection techniques used questionnaires, data collection with questionnaires is carried out by asking questions to respondents. The result of this study shows that there a correlation and positive influence between English ability and employee’s performance. The indicators from variable X were reading, listening, speaking, writing and the indicators from variable Y was Job completion, contribution and discipline. The correlation coefficient ranges from -1 to 1, where 1 signifies a perfect positive correlation. In this case, the value of 0.780 suggests a highly positive correlation between the two variables. From the results obtained from several tests that have been verified as valid, this result significantly strengthens the hypothesis (H1) that there is a positive association between English ability and employee performance. In statistical terms, the correlation coefficient being close to 1 provides strong evidence supporting the acceptance of our hypothesis. It implies that as English ability increases, employee performance tends to improve.

Abstract

This study examines the evolving role of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in the context of curriculum changes in Indonesia. The research addresses two key objectives: (1) to describe the characteristics of effective English teachers and (2) to identify the traits of ineffective English teachers. As educational reforms in Indonesia prompt shifts in teaching strategies, understanding these characteristics is critical to fostering improved learning outcomes in the EFL classroom. Using a qualitative descriptive research design, this study employs an interpretive approach to gather and analyze data. Qualitative research, in this context, attempts to describe and explain the teaching phenomena as they occur naturally. The study relies on interviews, observations, and document analysis to collect data, which is presented descriptively rather than numerically. The findings highlight the importance of adaptive teaching methods, pedagogical skills, and student-centered learning approaches in shaping the effectiveness of English teachers. Conversely, ineffective teachers tend to lack adaptability, demonstrate poor classroom management, and fail to engage students actively in the learning process. The significance of this research lies in its potential to inform teacher training programs and professional development initiatives. By providing a clear delineation between effective and ineffective teaching practices, the study offers valuable insights into how teachers can better align their methods with contemporary curriculum demands. This, in turn, can lead to enhanced critical thinking and language skills among EFL students in Indonesia. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on EFL teaching in Indonesia and underscores the need for continuous adaptation in teaching methodologies to meet evolving educational standards.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the effects of the KWL method on reading comprehension skills, specifically to determine if there is a difference in reading comprehension between students taught using the KWL Strategy and those who are not. This study was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Mamasa over the course of one month (4 meetings), with two groups: an experimental group and a control group, totaling 72 participants (36 in each group). The treatment was applied to the Experimental group, while the Control group did not receive it. The study used SPSS to analyze the data to determine the differences in scores between the experimental and control groups. The result of the Independent Samples t-test shows a significance (2-tailed) value < 0.05, specifically 0.000, indicating a significant difference between the Experimental group and the Control group. This outcome signifies that the use of the Know, Want, and Learn method has led to a statistically significant improvement in students' reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 1 Mamasa.

Abstract

This study aims to assess the self-confidence levels of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in terms of their speaking performance. This study uses a quantitative approach with a quantitative descriptive method. The sample of the study consists of twenty-eight EFL students from the English Language Education study program, at Universitas Negeri Makassar using cluster random sampling. The data collection technique used a questionnaire as an instrument. The data were analyzed using SPSS 25 to find out the frequency and percentage distributions and to identify common patterns in self-confidence levels. Additionally, the mean score is calculated to provide a quantitative measure of the overall self-confidence among the respondents. The findings of the data analysis revealed that the level of EFL students’ self-confidence in speaking performance is at a high enough level with a score of 76.51. As a result, this study highlights the importance of self-confidence issues in EFL teaching practices and suggests that fostering a supportive learning environment could enhance students’ speaking performance and overall language proficiency.
