Abstract

Thematic learning is considered as efficient as the students taught learn in coherent context and holistic way, as well as associate the concepts they learnt with their surrounding and real-life examples. The aim of the study was to identify the effectiveness of the problem-based thematic learning module prototype to improve students' critical thinking skills. This research and development were conducted based on Borg and Gall model. The module effectiveness was tested using pre-experimental design. The sampling technique used was cluster random sample which employed as many as 33 students in which the data collection technique used was test. The data gained was analyzed using paired sample t-test. The results showed that the students’ post-test score of critical thinking skills were significantly differed from their pre-test score. Therefore, the developed module can improve student critical thinking skills effectively. Moreover, it is suggested that teacher should apply a mixed method of teaching as it helps to strengthen students’ critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Abstrac: The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of the learning models on the learning achievement in Mathematics viewed from learning activities of the students. The learning models compared were the Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) with Guided Note Taking (GNT) learning model, the Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) learning model, and conventional learning model. This research used the quasi experimental research method. Its population was all of the students in Grade VIII of state Junior Secondery  School of the Klaten regency in Academic Year 2013/2014. Instruments used to collect data were mathematics achievement test and the learning activities questionnaire. The data were analyzed using unbalanced two ways ANOVA. The results of the research are as follows. 1) The cooperative learning model of TAI with GNT result in a better learning achievement in Mathematics than the  cooperative learning model of TAI and the conventional learning model, whereas cooperative learning model of TAI result in the same good learning achievement in Mathematics as the learning model conventional. 2) The students with the high learning activities have the same good learning achievement in Mathematics as  the moderate learning activities. The students with the high and moderate learning activitiy have a better learning achievement in Mathematics than those with low learning activities. 3) In the cooperative learning model of TAI with GNT and TAI, the students with the high learning activities have the same good learning achievement in Mathematics as those with the moderate activities and the students with high and moderate learning activities have a better learning achievement in Mathematics than those with the low learning activities. In the conventional learning model, the students with high learning activities have the same good learning achievement in Mathematics as those with the moderate learning activities, whereas the high and moderate learning activities have a better learning achievement in Mathematics than those with the low learning activities. 4) For the students with the high and moderate learning activities, the cooperative learning model of TAI with GNT result in the same good learning achievement in Mathematics as the cooperative learning model of TAI and the conventional learning model. The student with the low learning activities, the cooperative learning model of TAI with GNT result in the same good learning achievement in Mathematics as the cooperative learning model of TAI, whereas the cooperative learning model of TAI with GNT and TAI result a better learning achievement in Mathematics than those the conventional learning model. Keywords: Team Assisted Individualization (TAI), Guided Note Taking (GNT), conventional learning, Learning Activities, Learning Mathematics Achievement

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study was to describe teacher?s strategy in teaching mathematics on the topic of circle to intellectual disability students in SLB Muhammadiyah Cepu. The subject of this  study was classroom mathematics teacher and all students of eighth grade of SLB Muhammadiyah Cepu. The data of this study was teacher?s strategy in teaching mathematics on the topic of circle taken from the result of recording transcription of teaching and learning process through two observations. The data validity technique used in this study was member check, a process of data checking taken by the researcher from the subject of the study to examine the possibilities of different assumptions. The result reveal that in opening activity (pre-activity) and closing activity (post-activity), teacher implemented movement and rhythm strategy by asking the students to sing circle song. While in the main activity, teacher?s strategy in teaching mathematics on the topic of circle was dealing with conceptual knowledge by implementing  Bruner?s learning theory at enactive stage, it is by introducing the concept of the form of circle with some learning media to students. Then, the teacher?s strategy in teaching mathematics on the topic of circle which deals with procedural knowledge was by implementating guided discovery model, it is by guiding the students to do activity to count the circle?s  circumference by using thread. But, because of the limitation of the mentally handicapped students? intellectuality, the guided discovery model which was implemented by the teacher was firstly by giving some examples to the students, then asking the students to practice to find the circle?s circumference from the length of the thread by the students themselves. Keywords: teacher?s strategy, conceptual knowledge, procedural knowledge, mathematics teaching learning, student with intellectual disability.

Abstract

This study aimed at searching the different effect of Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) and Think Pair Share (TPS) types of cooperative learning models with Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach on the students’ learning outcome viewed from students’ learning activity. The observation, interview, questionnaires, and tests were used to obtain the data which were then analyzed using two-way ANOVA. The result of research showed that: (1) STAD with RME approach provides better learning outcome than TPS with RME approach does; (2) the students with high learning activities have mathematics learning outcome better than those with medium and low learning activities; and (3) there is no interaction between the model of teaching and learning activities students to the results of the students’  mathematics learning.

The learning models compared were PjBL, GI and direct learning model. This study was a quasi experimental research with a 3 x 3 factorial design. The population of research was all of the VIII graders of Junior High Schools in Metro City. The sample was taken using stratified cluster random sampling. The sample of research consisted of 238 students with details 80 students for the experiment 1, 80 students for experiment 2 and 78 students for control classes. The instruments used for collecting data were mathematics learning achievement test and student EI questionnaires. The results of this research were as follows: (1) the use of the PjBL model couldresult better learning achievement than both GIandthe direct learning. The use of GI could result better learning achievement than the direct learning model, (2) Students with high EI, resulting better learning achievement than students with moderate or low EI, and students with moderate EI hadbetter learning achievement than students with low EI, (3) For those students with high and moderate EI, the PjBL modelresulted better learning achievement than direct learning model, while the PjBL models gave the same learning achievement asGI, and the GIgavethe same learning achievement as the direct learning model. For students with low EI, PjBL, GIand direct learning model gave the same learning achievement, (4) In learning using PjBL model, students with high EI had better learning achievement than students with low EI, and students with moderate EI had better learning achievement than students with low EI, while students with high EI had the same learning achievement as students with moderate EI. On learning using GImodel, students with a high EI had better learning achievement than thosewith low EI, while students with high EI had the same learning achievement as students with moderate EI and students with moderate EI had the same learning achievement as students with a low EI. Direct learning model gave the same effect on learning outcomes among students who had high, moderate and low EI.Keywords: Project Based Learning (PjBL), Group Investigation (GI), Direct learning andEmotional Intelligence (EI).
