Abstract

Misconceptions frequently occur in various physics concepts, including momentum and impulse. Misconceptions in students must be addressed since they can hinder the learning process. This study aimed at investigating students' misconceptions on momentum and impulse material after implementing Interactive Conceptual Instruction (ICI) with computer simulations. The method employed in this study was a quasi-experimental design with One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. This research was conducted on 30 students of the tenth grade determined by the purposive sampling technique. Fifteen four-tier test items were used as the research instrument. The N-gain analysis was performed to know the reduction of misconceptions. The results showed that the N-gain value obtained was 0.46 with moderate interpretation, meaning that Interactive Conceptual Instruction (ICI) aided with computer simulations could reduce student misconceptions. The results also indicated that the misconception after treatment was smaller than before treatment. This phenomenon can be seen from the reduction of misconceptions by 11.6% after implementing Interactive Conceptual Instruction (ICI) with computer simulations. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Interactive Conceptual Instruction (ICI) with computer simulations can facilitate students in the learning process so that misconceptions can be reduced.

Abstract

Assessment in the form of an instrument is very important to test for validity and reliability so that it can measure student learning outcomes. We implemented a measurement instrument designed to assess students' understanding of elasticity. The measurement instrument consisted of 15 items. The instrument was administered to students who were taking physics subjects in senior high school in their second year. In total, 74 students were taken from two classes in Padang, Indonesia. In this study, the students' performance was collected as quantitative data and evaluated using the Rasch model. The results showed that the data matched the Rasch model measurements. Moreover, female students answered 53 percent of the questions better than male students. Furthermore, the DIF plot shows that S8 is the most difficult problem, while S14 is the easiest. There are two gender bias questions, namely S12 and S14. Both questions were easily solved by female students. However, all questions can be used to measure students' abilities in elasticity and Hooke's law. This study seeks to make a contribution to the literature on EMCI evaluations by offering a case study for academics and researchers to use in assessing students' elasticity skills

Abstract

Physics learning often faces challenges in improving students' conceptual understanding. Conceptual change models are widely used to address this. This study aims to analyze these gaps, review the materials used, and identify improvements made. The study examined fifty-seven articles from four good-quality journal databases: Scopus, Science Direct, Eric, and Sage Journal. This study uses a systematic literature review method using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) technique. The analyzed data was visualized based on selected articles in the form of mapping tabula, including the country of origin of the research, the physics content studied, the frequency of topic material, and the focus of the problem in the research over the last five years (2019-2024). The findings show that the trend of applying learning models in various physics learning materials over the past five years has varied, with ten countries implementing conceptual change model research. The content of matter has varied, including complete kinematics, fluids, pendulums, temperature and heat, sound waves, light waves, Pascal's laws, and quantum. The benefits of integrating conceptual change models in physics learning include diagnosing students who experience misunderstandings and improving conceptual understanding. One of the next research recommendations is to apply momentum and impulse materials while still using a conceptual change model in physics learning.

Abstract

Creative thinking, as one of the 21st century skills, is an ability that must be mastered by individuals, especially in this ever-changing era. Therefore, the demands of teachers are not only limited to training them in learning, but also knowing the profile of students’ creative thinking abilities is also considered very important. The purpose of this study was to describe teachers’ perceptions and interests about the need for creative thinking instruments with the PISA 2021 framework. A total of 30 physics teachers who teach in various provinces in Indonesia were involved as respondents in this study. Respondents are high school physics teachers with characteristics aged 20-40 years, 19 are female, and 11 are male. Based on the results of the analysis, it is known that more than 90% of respondents stated that it is very important to measure students’ creative thinking skills. As many as 83% of respondents stated that they were interested in the PISA 2021 creative thinking ability framework and wanted to try to do a creative thinking ability test with the PISA framework. Thus, teachers have a positive perception of the PISA 2021 creative thinking framework. For this reason, it is recommended for teachers to develop creative thinking instruments with the 2021 PISA framework to measure students' creative thinking skills in learning.

Abstract

Misconceptions in physics, particularly in topics like momentum and impulse, pose significant barriers to meaningful learning, as students often rely on everyday experiences that contradict scientific principles. Addressing these misconceptions is crucial for improving students’ understanding and application of physics concepts in real-world contexts. This study examines the effectiveness of the Technology-Integrated Modification, Observation, Reflection, and Evaluation (T-MORE) model in addressing misconceptions about momentum and impulse through a convergent parallel mixed-methods design. A total of 22 first-semester undergraduate students participated in this study, receiving instruction incorporating videos, PhET simulations, and AI-assisted reflection tools. Conceptual understanding was measured using the Four-Tier Momentum and Impulse Misconception Diagnostic Test (FT-MIMDT). The McNemar test confirmed a statistically significant improvement, while the Reduction of Misconception Quantity (RMQ) indicated a high reduction in misconceptions. Qualitative analysis revealed changes in students’ misconceptions regarding momentum conservation and impulse-momentum relationships after instruction. These findings confirm the effectiveness of T-MORE in improving conceptual understanding and reducing misconceptions in momentum and impulse. The implementation of T-MORE can be further optimized by incorporating collaborative discussion sessions and adaptive formative assessments to ensure that all students can reconstruct their understanding more comprehensively.

Abstract

Background: Training methodologies in badminton often focus on technique and endurance, yet the integration of scientific principles, such as torque, remains underutilized. As a critical factor influencing shot power, speed, and accuracy, a deeper understanding of torque can optimize training effectiveness and systematically enhance athlete performance.Aims: This research aims to analyze prospective badminton coaches’ understanding and application of physics concepts, particularly torque, in training methodologies. Methods: This research employed the qualitative descriptive method involving 24 prospective badminton coaches (17 males and 7 females, aged 18-22) in Bandung, Indonesia. A survey was conducted to assess their understanding of physics and its application in training. Data collected through the questionnaire was analyzed using NVivo software, which facilitated thematic analysis and coding of qualitative responses. Results: The findings indicate that, while most of the respondents are familiar with physics terms, only a few recognize torque as a relevant concept in the badminton context. A deeper understanding of torque can help coaches optimize playing techniques by improving racket rotation efficiency, thereby enhancing hitting power with minimal energy expenditure. Conclusion: This research demonstrates that integrating physics concepts, particularly torque on the racket, into badminton training provides a valuable perspective for improving training quality. The findings suggest that badminton coach training programs should integrate physics concepts to enhance training effectiveness and efficiency while systematically improving athlete performance based on scientific evidence.
