Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of multimodal instructional media integrating text-based and video-based materials in developing English for Specific Purposes (ESP) vocabulary among Civic Education students, while also investigating potential gender-related differences in learning outcomes. Anchored in multimodal learning theory, the study proceeds from the premise that text and video constitute complementary rather than competing modes of vocabulary instruction, each contributing unique affordances to learners' lexical development. An interrupted time series quasi-experimental design was adopted, involving 82 second-semester Civic Education students at Universitas Negeri Makassar, Indonesia, who participated in four structured treatment sessions alternating between text-based and video-based instruction. Pre-test and post-test assessments were administered at every session, consistently demonstrating significant vocabulary gains across all treatments. Mean scores progressed from 75 (pre-test, Session 1) to 88 (post-test, Session 4), with female students outperforming their male counterparts across all assessment points. These findings contribute substantively to the ESP vocabulary research literature by demonstrating that multimodal text-video integration yields both immediate and cumulative vocabulary gains, and by foregrounding the pedagogical significance of gender as a variable in ESP instructional design.

Abstract

This study investigates EFL students’ anxiety in responding to teachers’ questions, focusing on the underlying contributing factors and the strategies that effectively reduce this anxiety. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research was conducted at SMPN 2 Barombong with eighth-grade students as the participants. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that fear of making mistakes, lack of confidence, and limited vocabulary are the main factors contributing to students’ anxiety. These factors often cause students to hesitate, remain silent, or avoid responding altogether during classroom interactions. The study also identifies several effective strategies to minimize anxiety, including building positive teacher-student relationships, creating fun learning activities, using humor and positive thinking, and providing rewards. These strategies help build a supportive classroom environment that fosters students’ confidence and reduces the fear of negative evaluation. This research offers significant insights for teachers and future researchers in understanding and addressing EFL students' speaking anxiety.

Abstract

The phenomenon of sensationalism in digital news about celebrities is increasing as online media compete to attract readers’ attention. To gain clicks and audience engagement, media often use ambiguous and hyperbolic language that has the potential to violate pragmatic principles. This study aims to identify forms of maxim violations in sensational digital news about celebrities, analyze how they are implemented by the media, and examine their impact on public perception. This study uses a qualitative method with a discourse analysis design. The research data consists of fifteen digital news stories with the theme of celebrity sensationalism taken from five popular online news portals in Indonesia. Data analysis was carried out using Levinson’s pragmatic heuristic theory, which includes the Q-Heuristic, I-Heuristic, and M-Heuristic, and analyzed through the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014). The results of the study indicate that violations of the M-Heuristic were the most dominant, followed by the I-Heuristic and Q-Heuristic, which are used as discourse strategies to create drama and sensational effects. The impacts include reader misunderstanding, reinforcement of negative stereotypes about artists, and decreased media credibility.

Abstract

Kesenjangan antara kompetensi bahasa Inggris lulusan vokasi dan tuntutan dunia usaha dan industri (DUDI) merupakan tantangan struktural yang terus dihadapi perguruan tinggi vokasi di Indonesia. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan English for Meeting bagi mahasiswa STMIK Kharisma Makassar, sebuah institusi vokasi yang berfokus pada sistem informasi, bisnis digital, dan teknik informatika. Pelatihan yang melibatkan 18 mahasiswa ini dilaksanakan dalam empat sesi pertemuan menggunakan pendekatan berbasis studi kasus (case-based learning), yang mencakup topik perkenalan diri profesional, teknik memimpin dan mempresentasikan gagasan dalam rapat, serta strategi menyampaikan opini secara profesional. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan pada kepercayaan diri dan kompetensi komunikasi peserta, yang tercermin dari capaian nilai rata-rata tes akhir sebesar 88 dari 100. Seluruh peserta (100%) menyatakan bahwa pelatihan ini sangat penting bagi persiapan karier mereka, terutama dalam konteks industri MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Convention, and Exhibition). Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa pendekatan pembelajaran berbasis studi kasus efektif dalam menjembatani kesenjangan antara kompetensi akademik dan tuntutan nyata dunia industri.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the level of students’ reading achievement when assessed using multiple-choice questions. Employing a quantitative descriptive design, the research was conducted at SMPN 40 MAKASSAR in the 2025/2026 academic year and involved 32 eight-grade students selected through cluster random sampling. The instrument consisted of a multiple-choice reading comprehension test developed based on indicators such as identifying the main idea, locating detailed information, interpreting vocabulary in context, making inferences, and determining the authors’ purpose. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings showed that the mean scores were 78.75 with a standard deviation of 7.071. These results indicate that students demonstrated a satisfactory level of reading comprehension when assessed through multiple-choice questions, suggesting that this format can effectively measure students’ reading achievement at the junior high school level.

Abstract

Kegiatan program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) ini merupakan program kegiatan mandiri berupa pelatihan bahasa Inggris Promosi bagi MTsN 1 Makassar pada bulan November tahun 2025. Pelatihan difokuskan pada promosi makanan khas Makassar, seperti Pisang Ijo dan makanan lokal lainnya. Tujuan kegiatan ini adalah meningkatkan kepercayaan diri siswa dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris serta memperluas kosakata yang berkaitan dengan bahasa promosi. Pelatihan menggunakan metode interaktif, meliputi workshop, simulasi, dan role play, dengan durasi total 5 (lima) jam. Hasilnya menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam kepercayaan diri, kemampuan berbicara, pelafalan, penguasaan kosakata, serta antusiasme siswa. Produk yang dihasilkan berupa teks promosi dan poster yang menunjukkan kemampuan siswa menerapkan keterampilan yang dipelajari dalam konteks nyata. Pelatihan ini memiliki manfaat jangka panjang, termasuk kemampuan guru untuk melanjutkan kegiatan serupa dan potensi sekolah menjadikannya program rutin. Kegiatan ini juga mendukung pengembangan keterampilan Bahasa Inggris praktis sekaligus mempromosikan budaya lokal melalui makanan khas Makassar.

Abstract

Model Pebelajaran dalam dunia Pendidikan saat ini telah banyak mengalami pergeseran seiring dengan kemajuan teknologi yang semakin massif. Ada gap yang dialami oleh guru SMP Negeri 40 Makassar ini dimana mereka masih belum banyak memiliki pengetahuan mengenai media yang bisa digunakan sebagai penunjang model pembelajaran interaktif. Inilah yang melatar belakangi tim pengabdian masyarakat UNM untuk memberikan pelatihan dan workshop “PKM Pelatihan Penggunaan Canva dan Mentimeter sebagai media pembelajaran interaktif bagi Guru SMP Negeri 40 Makassar”. Kegiatan ini diselenggarakan di SMP Negeri 40 Makassar dengan metode Workshop dan praktik langsung. Peserta pelatihan ini adalah semua Guru SMP Negeri 40 Makassar. Kegiatan berlangsung selama 3 hari dengan durasi 8 (delapan) jam/hari. Kegiatan ini diharapkan menambah keterampilan dan pemahaman peserta terkait penggunaan media ajar Canva dan Mentimeter. Hasil evaluasi kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa seluruh peserta dapat menerima materi yang disampaikan dengan baik yang ditunjukkan bahwa sekitar 85% peserta sudah memiliki media ajar interaktif yang menggunakan canva dan mentimeter.

Abstract

This study aims to mapping research, key contributors, collaboration patterns, and the thematic structure of digital literacy research in the context of language education within the Scopus database during the 2015–2024 period. The study employed a quantitative bibliometric approach with a descriptive exploratory design. Data were collected through searches of titles, abstracts, and keywords using a combination of terms related to digital literacy and language education, resulting in 277 documents. Publication metadata were exported and analyzed using VOSviewer to generate network maps of authors, institutions, countries, and keyword co-occurrences. The findings indicate that publication output increased sharply after 2020 and reached its peak in 2024. The most productive authors were Kohnke, Moorhouse, and Tour, while the leading institutions were dominated by Monash University and The Education University of Hong Kong. Geographically, the largest contributions came from Spain, the United States, and Australia, with increasing participation from Indonesia. The thematic analysis produced seven major clusters highlighting online learning, teachers’ digital competence, multimodality, mobile-based learning, and the integration of artificial intelligence in language learning.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the implementation of 21st-century 6C skills (Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, Citizenship, and Character) in EFL classrooms, focusing on teachers' perceptions. The research theories were grounded in social constructivism by Vygotsky (1978) and language teacher cognition by Borg (2003) to frame the understanding of learning processes and skill development. Using a qualitative approach, the research collected data through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. Two experienced EFL teachers from SMPN 27 Makassar, Indonesia participated in the study. Findings revealed that teachers perceived 6C skills as crucial for developing students' global competence. The study highlights the need for targeted teacher professional development, enhanced school resources, and policy adjustments to effectively integrate 6C skills in EFL instruction.

Abstract

Developing listening skills in learning English as a foreign language poses several challenges, particularly when using audio-visual media. This study investigates the obstacles encountered by students during the learning process. Based on data collected from six Grade XI students at SMAN 2 Pangkep through non-participant observation, semi structured interviews, and documentation, the findings reveal four main types of obstacles. Linguistic barriers include difficulties in understanding vocabulary and various English accents. Technical obstacles involve problems such as poor device quality or unstable internet connectivity. Cognitive challenges emerge when students struggle to maintain focus or process the information effectively. Additionally, environmental factors, such as noise or other distractions in the learning environment, further hinder comprehension. These challenges significantly affect students' ability to engage with audio-visual materials and highlight the need for supportive strategies in enhancing listening skills.
