Abstract

The emergence of social media has opened huge potentials for the risk mitigation in disaster management. However, the big flood in 2021 that swept almost entire South Kalimantan territory has left some questions about the relations of social media and risk mitigation despite the prevalence of social media users in the region. This article sought to describe the utilization (or lack thereof) of social media in the disaster management in the South Kalimantan especially in Banjar Regency, Hulu Sungai Tengah Regency, and Tabalong Regency before, during and after the big flood. The data are gathered by conducting systematic interviews with stakeholders, observation, and collecting related information from the internet. For the result, it was evident that social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram played critical roles where traditional communication systems failed or were nonexistent. In Banjar, external volunteers utilized these platforms to coordinate aid and disseminate crucial information, in contrast, the initial disregard for digital communications in HST highlighted the challenges of media literacy and trust in digital platforms, while the case of Tabalong serves as a model for other regions, demonstrating how leveraging local knowledge and social media can create a resilient and responsive community.

Abstract

Chronic Intermittent Hypoxia (CIH) can initiate oxidative stress and inflammation. Ficus carica is known to contain antioxidant compounds capable of suppressing oxidative stress. This study aims to investigate the protective role of Ficus carica puree (FCP) on the levels of Malondialdehyde (MDA), Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), SOD/MDA ratio, Platelet Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR), and Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α) in the lungs of rats induced by CIH. Rats were treated with FCP at doses of 1.25 ml/200g (CIH-F1), 2.5 ml/200g (CIH-F2), and 5 ml/200g (CIH-F3). All rats, except for the neutral control group, were subjected to chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) for 4 hours/day for 30 days. The CIH-F2 and CIH-F3 groups demonstrated significantly lower levels of lung MDA compared to the CIH group. The CIH-F3 group showed a considerably lower level of lung SOD compared to the CIH group. However, the SOD/MDA exhibited a considerably greater value in the CIH-F3 induction group compared to the other groups. The TNF-α in lungs and PLR levels were significantly lower in the CIH-F3 group than in the CIH group. These findings suggest that FCP may serve as a functional food to mitigate the negative impact of hypoxic circumstances on lung health.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze factors associated with malnutrition among children under five in East Kalimantan Province using secondary data from 2021-2023. The dependent variable is the proportion of malnutrition, including underweight, stunting, and wasting. Independent variables include the proportion of low birth weight (LBW), complete basic immunization (CBI) coverage, adolescent pregnancy (<19 years), sanitation access, and poverty rate. Multiple linear regression analysis found that these five variables simultaneously have a significant effect on malnutrition prevalence (p=0.025) with a coefficient of determination of 39.5%. CBI coverage was identified as the most significant predictor of malnutrition (p=0.02). These findings highlight the importance of immunization, prevention of adolescent pregnancy, improved sanitation, and poverty reduction to address malnutrition. The study provides a policy basis for enhancing nutrition intervention programs in the region.

Abstract

Road infrastructure plays a crucial role in supporting economic growth, particularly in agrarian and resource-rich regions. This research aims to conduct a comparative analysis of rigid and flexible pavement types in terms of cost efficiency and construction duration on the Sambeng–Kedewan road segment in Bojonegoro Regency. Utilizing the MDPJ 2017 method for flexible pavement design and Pd T-14-2003 for rigid pavement, this research employs a quantitative descriptive-comparative approach to analyze structural thickness, estimated construction costs, and implementation timelines for both 20- and 40-year design life spans. Primary data were collected through field surveys, including Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) tests for subgrade CBR values, while secondary data were sourced from government agencies and technical literature. Traffic load analysis was performed using ESA5 (Equivalent Standard Axle 5-ton) and JSKN (Number of Commercial Vehicle Axles) parameters, and cost efficiency was evaluated through RAB (Cost Budget Plan) and life cycle cost analysis (LCCA). Findings from various case studies and technical assessments indicate that although rigid pavement involves higher initial investment, it offers greater longevity and lower maintenance expenses in the long term. This research provides crucial insights for local governments in determining the most efficient pavement type under limited budgets and strict construction timeframes. The results are expected to serve as a reference for future infrastructure planning in similar rural and agricultural regions.

Abstract

The hedonistic lifestyle, which emphasizes the pursuit of pleasure and excessive consumption, has become an increasingly prominent phenomenon in the daily lives of university students. This lifestyle is suspected to influence their ability to manage personal finances wisely. This study aims to examine the effect of a hedonistic lifestyle on students' financial management capabilities and to identify differences in financial management between students with high and low levels of hedonism. The research employs a quantitative approach using a survey method, involving 360 respondents from three universities in Cikarang selected proportionally through Slovin’s sampling technique. The research instrument is a Likert-scale questionnaire, which has been tested for validity and reliability. Data analysis was conducted using simple linear regression and independent sample t-tests. Preliminary results indicate a significant influence of a hedonistic lifestyle on financial management, as well as differences based on gender. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of hedonistic lifestyle and financial literacy into a single analytical model that aligns with the behavioral context of today’s students. The implications of these findings are expected to contribute to the development of behavior-based financial literacy programs that foster more adaptive and sustainable financial management strategies among university students.
