Abstract

This study aims to comprehensively describe the profile of critical thinking skills among fifth-grade students at SDN Masangan Wetan in the context of learning about the human digestive system. The research focuses on identifying both internal and external factors that support or hinder the development of critical thinking skills. Using an essay-based assessment grounded in Facione’s framework, which includes interpretation, analysis, inference, and evaluation, the study measured students’ critical thinking abilities. Additionally, interviews with teachers provided insights into the instructional strategies, media usage, and teaching models employed to foster critical thinking. The findings show that students’ critical thinking skills vary across different indicators, with the highest proficiency in interpretation and the lowest in evaluation. Internal factors such as motivation, cognitive ability, and self-efficacy positively influence skill development, while external factors including a supportive learning environment, innovative teaching methods, and diverse educational media also play crucial roles. The study found that integrated, interactive media and student-centered models like Problem-Based Learning and collaborative learning significantly enhance critical thinking. Conversely, conventional teaching practices and limited media use restrict students’ critical thinking growth. Teacher interviews highlighted the importance of practical learning activities and varied instructional materials to engage students actively. These results underscore the necessity for educators to implement multifaceted approaches that address both student-internal and environmental factors to optimize critical thinking development. The study involved a total sample of 35 students, and quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, with mean scores and standard deviations reported to illustrate proficiency levels across critical thinking indicators. Ultimately, the research contributes valuable evidence for educational stakeholders seeking to improve science education quality through enhanced critical thinking skills, especially in primary education settings. Abstract

The advancement of science and technology requires students to possess strong scientific literacy, particularly in understanding physical phenomena such as elasticity. However, students often demonstrate a low conceptual understanding of elasticity in real-life contexts, posing a challenge in physics education. This study aims to analyze students’ physics literacy skills using the Nature of Science Literacy Test (NOSLiT) instrument. This research employed a descriptive quantitative approach with a sample of 30 students from classes A, B, and C. Data were collected through a written test based on the NOSLiT framework, which consists of six scientific literacy indicators, and analyzed quantitatively using achievement categories. The findings revealed that students' overall scientific literacy achievement was categorized as low (43.2%). The highest achievement was on the scientific evidence rule indicator (58.8%, moderate category), while the lowest was on science process skills (24.3%, very low category). These results suggest the need for more interactive and experiment-based instructional strategies to enhance students’ conceptual understanding. Students' responses were mostly descriptive and lacked evidence-based reasoning, with misconceptions about relationships among physics variables still apparent. These findings emphasize the importance of incorporating scientific practices—such as experimentation, evidence utilization, and contextual problem-solving—into teaching. This study was limited to a single school and instrument, which restricts the generalizability of the results. Future research should include a broader sample and adopt a mixed-method approach to obtain more comprehensive insights. Moreover, the development of inquiry-based learning models is crucial to support the advancement of students' scientific literacy.

Abstract

Sustainability is a major challenge in the 21st century that must be managed by physics learning. This study aims to explore students' sustainability literacy in the context of energy conservation and transformation through physics questions created with an environmental approach. This study uniquely integrates local pesantren contexts into physics education to address sustainability literacy, offering a novel contribution to science education by incorporating cultural and contextual relevance. With a descriptive exploration of 30 grade X students from senior high school Nurul Jadid, the research was conducted using tests, questionnaires, and interviews. The results on the knowledge dimension showed that students performed very well at low cognitive levels, but higher-order thinking skills, especially evaluation and creation, were still low. In the skill dimension, students' ability to solve problems was moderate, with weaknesses in the aspects of evaluation and reflection. Although students responded well to the contextual problems, many had difficulty in drawing energy transformation schemes. These results indicate the need for more practical and contextualized learning to strengthen sustainability literacy in physics learning.

Abstract

Physics learning in schools can foster essential skills for the current era, one of which is scientific literacy. Scientific literacy involves examining phenomena in students’ everyday lives, which can be explored through local wisdom. However, there are still limited studies that integrate local wisdom into physics learning to develop students’ scientific literacy. Addressing this gap, the present study aims to develop a student worksheet (LKS) integrated with the local wisdom of the Boranan Lamongan dance to enhance students’ scientific literacy. This research describes the feasibility of the developed worksheet in terms of its validity and practicality. The study employed the ADDIE development model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The worksheet was tested on a limited scale in class XI science students at an Islamic Senior High School in East Java. The results show that the integration of local wisdom is feasible for use in physics learning to promote scientific literacy. The validity aspect achieved a PoA score of 84.13% (very valid), while the practicality aspect, assessed through learning implementation, obtained an average score of 96.04% (very practical). Overall, the findings indicate that the student worksheet integrating the Boranan Lamongan dance is feasible as a learning medium to foster students’ scientific literacy. Furthermore, this research contributes to the preservation of local culture by incorporating the Boranan dance into physics education.

Abstract

Physics learning is still often considered abstract and less interesting by students, so a more contextual and relevant approach is needed. Ethnophysics, which connects the concepts of physics with the local culture, is one of the alternatives to increase students understanding and interest. This study aims to identify and analyze the influence of ethnophysics-based learning on studentslearning interests and assess its impact on students understanding of physics concepts. In this study used mixed method with concurrent triangulation approach, where quantitative data obtained through Likert scale questionnaire and compared with qualitative data from students open questions. The results showed that the integration of ethnophysics in physics learning has a positive impact, with an average score of students understanding of 3.65 (high category) and increased interest in learning with a score of 3.56 (high category). In addition, the effectiveness of culture-based learning was also rated high (3.65) by students. Concurrent triangulation approach shows most students can benefit cultural integration in physics learning. However, there are still some students who have difficulty in applying physics concepts to numerical problems. Therefore, this study recommends the use of problem based learning (PBL)model in ethnophysics-based LKPD as a strategy to strengthen students problem-solving skills. The conclusion obtained from this study is that the integration of ethnophysics in physics learning can improve students understanding, interest, and learning effectiveness. In addition, the development of culture-based learning with the PBL approach is recommended as an innovative strategy that not only enhances the understanding of physics but also preserves the local cultural heritage

Abstract

The low problem-solving skills and self-efficacy of students in physics learning significantly impact their overall learning processes and outcomes. In order to address this issue, an inquiry learning model was implemented, along with the low-cost experiment tool. This learning model is designed to be valid and effective in enhancing students' problem-solving skills and self-efficacy. The research followed a non-equivalent control group design and involved 66 students to ensure the development of a high-quality learning model that meets the required standards and criteria. By utilising learning instruments, such as students' response questionnaires, problem-solving pre- and post-tests, and self-efficacy questionnaires, the focus of the physics topic in this research was the simple mathematic pendulum. The validity test results show that the learning instrument has high validity and reliability criteria, making it feasible to use in physics learning. Furthermore, the statistical effectiveness test results show that this learning model is effective in improving students' problem-solving skills and self-efficacy. As students engage in hands-on investigations and collaborate on meaningful projects, they are prompted to apply critical thinking and decision-making skills, directly contributing to the development of effective problem-solving strategies. The intrinsic motivation derived from successfully navigating the challenges of inquiry learning, coupled with the personal relevance of the content, nurtures students' confidence in their abilities, ultimately strengthening their self-efficacy as independent and capable learners. Research implies the development of innovative learning models, effectively enhancing students' PSS and SE.
