Abstract

The 2024 Batubara Regency Regent Election highlighted the use of religious and cultural identity-based political communication in digital spaces, particularly social media. This article aims to analyze the forms, strategies, and impacts of identity political communication constructed by political actors in the contest. Using a critical phenomenological approach and digital content analysis, this study explores how symbols, narratives, and representations of religious and cultural identity are produced, disseminated, and received by the multi-ethnic, predominantly Muslim community of Batubara. The results reveal three main patterns: (1) the use of religious symbols for the moral legitimacy of candidates; (2) the affirmation of local cultural identity as an emotional connection with voters; and (3) the representation of ethnic identity that is sometimes exploited in negative campaigns. Social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, have become primary platforms for the dissemination of identity narratives through hashtags, visual content, and short videos. This study also found a dual impact of identity politics, strengthening the consolidation of support but also causing emotional polarization and social fragmentation. These findings emphasize the importance of identity politics in the Batubara contest, as well as the need to improve political and digital literacy to minimize its negative impacts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of public communication regulation in the social system from the perspective of Luhmann's autopoiesis. This study uses a qualitative method with a library research approach. The data of this study is sourced from relevant literature. Data analysis is carried out by reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. The validity of the data in this study was carried out through a credibility test. The results of this study show that in the dynamics of public communication regulation in the social system based on Luhmann's autopoiesis perspective, public communication regulation functions to maintain a balance between information disclosure, control, and system adaptability to rapid social change. Luhmann emphasized that public communication systems must continue to produce and reproduce elements that ensure their functions continue to function, such as transparency, trust, and responsiveness. Adaptive regulations allow the government to interact effectively with the public, especially in the digital era which presents challenges such as misinformation, disinformation, and rapid information flow. Cross-sector collaboration and regulatory flexibility are needed to maintain social stability and strengthen the relationship between the government and society, with information disclosure as a key pillar. However, the regulation must also include privacy protection and control over the spread of invalid information, so that public communication systems remain relevant, accountable, and able to adapt to evolving social dynamics.

Abstract

This study examines the peaceful communication practiced by the Aceh Party (PA) in integrating local wisdom grounded in religious values. Beyond its political role, PA acts as a mediator in promoting peace, reconciliation, social cohesion, and democratic consolidation in Aceh. The research focuses on PA’s communication strategies, both direct and media-mediated, in the eastern coastal region of Aceh. Adopting a descriptive qualitative approach with a constructivist-interpretive phenomenological paradigm, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, focus group discussions, and literature review. The study draws on the Qur’an and Hadith as meta-theoretical foundations, supported by theories on peaceful communication, conflict transformation, human communication, deliberative democracy, local wisdom, and social cohesion. Findings reveal that PA develops a narrative of peaceful communication rooted in traditions such as peumulia jamee, musyawarah Mukim, meuseraya, peusijuek, and peumat jaroe, reflecting dialogical, inclusive, responsive, and adaptive practices based on akhlak al-karimah, ukhuwah, amar ma’ruf nahi munkar, and rahmatan lil ‘alamin. Local wisdom functions both as a conflict-resolution mechanism and a collective educational medium. Challenges such as pragmatism, symbolism, exclusivism, and patronage may distance PA from Islamic-based local wisdom. The study proposes an integrative model of peace communication, offering insights for sustainable, inclusive peace and political stability.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse digital literacy among social media users from a gender perspective. The rapid development of communication technology, particularly the emergence of social media, has transformed human interaction from limited offline spaces into boundless online environments. On the one hand, this transformation enables individuals to connect with a wider audience and access vast amounts of information. On the other hand, it has also given rise to various issues, including violations of digital ethics, the spread of misinformation, and the presence of deviant behaviours on social media platforms. Strong digital literacy is essential to prevent the normalization of such deviations, particularly those related to gender issues in digital spaces, in order to foster a healthier online environment. Users are expected to critically evaluate misinformation, reject gender bias, and contribute to creating safe and ethical social media spaces. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, examining social media phenomena and conducting interviews with 32 participants. The findings indicate that participants actively reject gender-related deviant content by reporting inappropriate accounts, maintaining their privacy, and critically assessing circulating content. Furthermore, this study recommends strengthening digital literacy through ethical awareness, mental health considerations, and balanced social media usage. Users are encouraged to engage with social media according to their needs, avoid excessive use, and report content containing elements of deviance, including gender-related deviations.

Abstract

This paper aims to determine the role of the Medina charter as a role model in the Indonesian context. The Medina Charter and the Constitution in force in Indonesia both have the function of regulating a heterogeneous society. However, the results of the implementation of the two are very contradictory. The rise of religious problems in Indonesia has led to the assumption that the constitution is unable to accommodate the interests of the whole society. This type of research uses qualitative methods with data collection techniques in the form of interviews and virtual observations. For secondary data used is a literature review approach by comparing various reading materials. This approach is able to provide arguments and reveal problems in a scientific and actual way. The results of the research show that the construction of messages in the Medina charter is oriented towards social and cultural values so that it creates synergy between religious communities. The message of moderation contained in the Medina charter places the principles of humanity with religion as a moral force.

Abstract

This article analyzes the content of AI meme images, showing how these images construct patterns of thinking through AI meme images. The unit of analysis in this article is the AI meme Tung Tung Sahur, one of many memes featuring a humanoid monster made of wood that resembles a kentongan (traditional Indonesian percussion instrument) that can move and talk. This character is associated with the tradition of waking people up for sahur during Ramadan. Using John Fiske's semiotics, three levels have been identified: at the level of reality, this meme aims to create a comedic and nostalgic effect. However, at the level of representation, it is found to be a signifier indicating the absurdity of thought patterns that can impact younger generations, particularly Generation Alpha, and there is a violation of visual codes that do not align with the sahur tradition during Ramadan. Furthermore, at the ideological level, this meme creates a sense of community among audiences who share similar memories of the sahur tradition. However, it also serves as a small alarm bell indicating a larger underlying issue that significantly influences societal thought patterns and manipulates audiences into consuming the ideology behind the meme.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse how religious identity is used as a political branding strategy in the 2024 North Sumatra gubernatorial election, and the communicative and social implications of this practice in the digital space. Using a qualitative content analysis, this study examined the official accounts of candidate pairs, digital volunteers, political influencers, and public conversations across various forms, including images, campaign videos, captions, tweets, comments, and hashtags. The results of the study show that religion-based identity politics is the dominant strategy in social media. Candidates and campaign teams actively utilise religious symbols, narratives, and figures to build a religious, trustworthy, and moral image. The endorsement of religious figures through digital testimonials strengthens the candidate's moral legitimacy, while religion-based content is disseminated not only top-down by official accounts but also horizontally through supportive communities and anonymous accounts. Religious content has been shown to have higher digital engagement than neutral content; however, it has also led to polarisation in the commentary space over the legitimacy of using religious symbols in politics.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze in-depth public perceptions and assessments of organizational communication mitigation in disaster management in Aceh Tamiang Regency, specifically regarding information clarity, speed of message delivery, inter-agency coordination, and the level of public trust in disaster information received. Furthermore, this study aims to identify and evaluate various communication media used in disaster mitigation, both conventional and information technology-based, and assess their effectiveness in improving preparedness, risk understanding, and community response to disasters. This study employed a case study approach, with documentation as the data collection technique. The researchers also employed domain analysis, and triangulation as a data validity check technique. The results indicate that the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has implemented organizational communication mitigation in Aceh Tamiang Regency through the use of social media, specifically the Instagram account @bpbd_acehtamiang, as the primary channel for disseminating disaster information, from early warnings of extreme weather events and evacuation activities to post-tropical cyclone Sinyar data updates. However, the research findings also revealed significant limitations in the effectiveness of this communication mitigation, primarily due to the limited human resources of the BPBD, which are not commensurate with the population of Aceh Tamiang, weak cross-agency coordination, and the suboptimal use of other communication media such as TikTok and YouTube, which tend to be passive and ceremonial. Public perceptions indicated dissatisfaction with the speed of response and distribution of post-disaster aid, which was considered slow and fraught with image interests, as well as the lack of structural and non-structural mitigation efforts such as area-based early warning, environmental management, and forest rehabilitation. Overall, the results of this study confirm that the communication mitigation of the Aceh Tamiang BPBD organization has not been carried out in an integrated, sustainable, and community-oriented manner, thus requiring strengthening the communication system, increasing institutional capacity, and a more educational and participatory media strategy
