Abstract

Cultural exchange is very likely to happen, because anyone who comes from a country or region will certainly not be separated from the culture in which he was born and raised. With a culture rooted in him, he had to share a room with other people from other cultures. This cultural exchange, may be causing a conflict. Conflict can be muted with the birth of an awareness that every person should be able to understand the culture of other people of different cultures with him. The process of communication that takes place between people of different cultures is often influenced by several factors: The Act, The Scene, The Agent (Performer), The Agency (Intermediaries), and The Purpose. Abstract

Research on Semiotic Analysis of the Malay Cross Door Tradition in Malay Traditional Weddings in Medan City aims to analyze, know and understand the meaning of the Malay Palang Pintu tradition which is commonly used in traditional Malay wedding processions in the city of Medan. The research was conducted using an Interpretative Qualitative research method and in more depth using the semiotic model method developed by Roland Barthes, which is a science and method used to analyze a sign that is carefully and based on facts in the field when researching the Malay Cross Pintu Tradition in Marriage. Medan City Malay Traditions. Data collection was carried out by direct observation of traditional Malay weddings using the Palang Pintu tradition, using books and previous research, and conducting interviews with traditional leaders or Telangkai from the Palang Pintu tradition. Based on the discussion and findings in the field, it is known that the Palang Pintu tradition itself has the aims and objectives of teaching and learning about obligations that must be carried out after marriage. In the Malay Palang Pintu tradition, it also means that the husband really holds the leadership of the household, starting from facing all kinds of obstacles, to putting patience to achieve good and healthy household goals.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Muslim family communication in dealing with fatherlessness and its implications for children's psychosocial development and communication behavior in Medan Johor City. The study uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method to understand the subjective experiences of mothers, children, and father substitute figures in everyday life. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña through the stages of data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that fatherlessness not only represents the physical absence of a father, but also the weakening of the father's communicative and affective function in the family. In this context, the mother becomes the main center of interaction, emotional management, and transmission of family meaning, while children form diverse interpretations of the father figure according to the cause of fatherlessness, such as death, divorce, migration, or work commitments. The novelty of this study lies in its placement of fatherlessness as a communicative reality in Muslim families, not merely as a psychological or social problem, but as a process of negotiation of meaning, role substitution, and the formation of children's identities through symbolic interaction. Theoretically, this study expands the study of family communication by demonstrating that father absence alters the architecture of domestic communication, attachment patterns, and children's emotional validation. Its scientific implications emphasize the importance of a family communication approach sensitive to Islamic values ??to understand Muslim families' adaptation strategies in maintaining relationship stability and child development in the face of fatherlessness.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students’ perspectives on influencer endorsement in the marketing of local G2G skincare products on Instagram. The increasing use of influencers in digital marketing strategies reflects a shift in marketing communication patterns; however, limited studies have specifically examined how students, as consumers, interpret influencer endorsement in the context of local products. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews with students of Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara who actively use social media. The findings indicate that influencer endorsement is perceived as a factor influencing interest and trust in products, particularly when influencers are considered credible, relevant to the product, and demonstrate authentic usage experiences. However, students do not passively accept endorsement content; instead, they engage in critical evaluation of the information presented. Furthermore, trust in the product is influenced not only by influencers but also by personal experience, peer reviews, and brand reputation. This study highlights that the effectiveness of influencer endorsement in marketing local skincare products depends not merely on influencer popularity, but on perceived credibility and relevance from the consumers’ perspective.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the TikTok account @detikcom framed the Labuan Bajo tourism tragedy on December 26, 2025, and how netizens responded to the news through the comments section. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on TikTok as a digital public space in the context of the tourism crisis, which is still relatively rarely studied compared to other social media platforms. The study used a qualitative approach with content analysis methods. Data came from approximately 3,500 comments on three TikTok videos, then 300 comments were purposively selected based on three criteria: relevance to the issue, having a clear meaning, and containing substantive responses to the news content. The results showed that the @detikcom news primarily emphasized issues of ship crossing procedures and safety facilities and infrastructure. Of the 300 selected comments, 248 comments could be categorized, while 52 comments were eliminated due to being irrelevant, spam, or ambiguous. Netizen responses were dominated by criticism (98 comments), evaluative (94 comments), emotional (42 comments), and tourism image (14 comments). These findings demonstrate that public responses on TikTok extend beyond emotional expression to include rational assessments of tourism safety governance. Thus, TikTok serves as a discursive arena that shapes public opinion while demonstrating digital social control over tourism safety issues.

Reframing money politics in local electoral debates: evidence from Southern Sulawesi, Indonesia Hayat, Nahrul; Hasan Sazali

Abstract

Local mayoral debates fulfil a strategic function in shaping public perceptions of political agendas and democratic processes at the subnational level. Empirical research on candidates' framing of public issues in formal debate contexts within Indonesian local elections remains scarce. This study redresses this lacuna through a qualitative framing analysis of the 2024 mayoral election debates in Makassar and Parepare—two urban centres in South Sulawesi exhibiting distinct political dynamics. Drawing on debate transcripts from official recordings, the analysis elucidates how candidates select, emphasise, and organise interpretive frames in articulating public policy issues. A systematic coding procedure, grounded in established framing typologies, was employed. The findings delineate three interrelated pathways: economic narratives that moralise welfare; digital narratives equating transparency with integrity; and moral narratives converting piety into political capital. These symbolic substitutions evince the endurance of symbolic patronage in contemporary discursive forms, conceptualised herein as a discursive moral economy of democracy. Theoretically, the study reconceptualises money politics as a representational mechanism for legitimacy construction, rather than merely a behavioural practice.
